MRS STEPHENSON DIES IN BRANTLEY Mrs. Lula Rainer Stephenson, 79, passed away at her home in Brantley at 10:20 Saturday night, May 23rd, following an illness of only a few days. She had been in declining health for several years before her fatal illness, which was caused by a fall she received Tuesday afternoon, May 19th. Mrs. Stephenson, or “Domie” as her friends and grandchildren affectionately called her, was born in Pike County at Mossy Grove near Troy March 16, 1863. Her parents were Young W. Rainer and Isabell Smart Rainer, pioneer settlers of Pike County. She was one of their twelve children. Soon after the Civil War and after the death of her father, the family moved to Troy, where she grew to young womanhood. She was educated in the public schools and later attended a boarding school for girls which was located on College Street in Troy. She married J. H. Stephenson in Troy October 2nd, 1882, and they moved to Talbotton, Ga., where they lived for several years, returning to Troy where she spent most of her useful life. Everyone in Troy knew and loved her. She is remembered by most of the Troy people as “Miss Lula.” She and Mr. Stephenson (“Uncle Bob”) moved to Brantley in 1919 to be near their children, who were living there at that time. After his death March 28, 1928, she remained in their home in Brantley. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Only the best can be said of her. She was kind, gentle, loving, honest and fair toward everyone and a good Christian mother. Her memory will always be held dear and cherished by her children, her friends, and the little children in her neighborhood, who loved her so and whom she loved. She was laid to rest in the Brantley cemetery Monday morning at eleven o’clock. Those who survive her are her children, Walter Stephenson of Houston, Texas; Mrs. J. L. Andrews, Jacksonville, Fla.; Dick Stephenson, Brantley, Mrs. R. B. Stanley of Greenville, Robert Stephenson of Brantley; one sister, Mrs. A. Black, Brantley; six grandchildren, Walter Stephenson, Jr., Houston, Texas, Dr. R. H. Stephenson, Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. J. B. Collins, Riverdale, Md., Joe Bob and Mary Price Stephenson of Brantley, and Louise Stanley of Greenville, Ala.; and two great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Stephenson has many friends in Greenville who knew and loved her when she made her home here with her daughter, Mrs. R. B. Stanley and Mr. Stanley. [See Comment Below] Additional Comments: The U.S. Census of 1910 shows that at age 47 Mrs. Stephenson was a dressmaker in Troy and had her own shop … and that she had borne six children and five were living at the time. The source of this article is not known but may have been written by a daughter of Mrs. Stephenson. It is included in an obituary/memorial collection inherited from Kathlyn Johnson Folmar (my mother) of Pike County, who also had a memorial item about Mrs. Stephenson’s mother, Isabel Jane Smart Rainer (Grannie Rainer), which I’m also posting at ALGenWeb. – Alice Folmar Kelley File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/pike/obits/s/stephens2248gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 3.7 Kb
