Obituary Collection of Kathlyn J Folmar
WILKES, WILLIAM JESSE  (b. 6-11-1864 – d. 3-12-1936)

	March 13 – W. J. Wilkes, 72, died at his home at New Brockton, Coffee Co.,
Ala., on Thurs., [Mar. 12, 1936], at 1:00 p.m., of pneumonia.  He had been
mostly shut-in for about five years, rarely being able to be out.  Last week, he
had the flu, which developed into pneumonia. 
	The funeral was held at the Baptist Church at 10:00 Friday a.m., with the Rev.
W. M. Bush officiating.  Burial was in the New Brockton cemetery.
	Active pallbearers were Martin Griswold, S. T. Jones, Henry Smith, Obed Moore,
Robert Hayes, and H. B. Jones.  Honorary pallbearers were W. D. Boyette, J. M.
Donaldson, J. A, Sawyer, Dave Marley, S. D. Fuller, H. F. Locklear, A. McKinnon,
Ralph Gunter, James Martin, Dr. B. J. Massey, and B. A. .Johnson.
	Mr. Wilkes was born and grew up in Pike County and lived there until age 42,
when he moved to Coffee County, and 26 years ago, he moved to the farm where he
lived until his death.  He had been an enterprising farmer and, for 39 years, he
was a loyal and consistent member of the Baptist church.
	His survivors include his widow [Evie Elizabeth Tatum Wilkes], nine children,
and nine grandchildren.  All his children remained near him, being good citizens
of New Brockton.  His sons are J. A., W. E., J. B., and B. J. Wilkes.  His
daughters are Mrs. J. D. Willis, Mrs. J. D. Rodgers, Mrs. Collis Martin, and
Misses Ruth and Julia Mae Wilkes.  He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. W.
R. Myers and Mrs. H. J. Mixon of Ariton, Ala., and Mrs. J. M. Allen of New
Brockton.
