Newspaper 1908 WOOD, MELLONA PARK (b. 1-10-1861 – d. 3-25-1908) Mrs. F. S. Wood, one of the most widely known women of Troy, [Ala., Pike Co.] died at the family home in that city shortly after noon last Wednesday. Nearly all the forenoon, she had been out calling among friends and was apparently in her usual health. On her return, she went into the parlor and sat down at the piano, when she dropped over dead. Hearing the fall, her nephew, Mr. Fletcher Bailey, hurried into the room, but she was dead. Her husband and a physician were at once summoned, but she was past earthly aid. The deceased was the wife of Frank S. Wood, the noted furniture dealer, and had been married 24 years. She was a devoted member of the Baptist church, a leader in the U.D.C., of which she had been State President, and a prominent figure in the social life of Troy and Southeast Alabama, being well-educated, accomplished, and a musician of fine attainments. She was Miss Mellona Park, was reared in Troy, and was related to many of the most prominent people of that city and surrounding country. Loved and respected by all classes for her many virtues and graces of womanhood, she will be sadly missed by a bereaved husband and relatives and the people generally. Additional Comments: Buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, Mrs. Wood was the daughter of Mrs. Ann A. Park. Her father, name unavailable, was born in Georgia. In 1880 at the age of 17, Mellona was boarding in LaGrange, Ga., maybe to attend school there. In 1890, her widowed mother lived with her and husband in Troy. Her husband’s name is seen in a family tree as Francis Staughton “Frank” Peleg Wood.
