NUMBER 14 1 Killed, 25 Hurt In Cyclone at Brundidge Dickert's Mill Collapses On Workmen But All Miraculously Escape; Damage Heavy In Rich Farm Section One person was known to have been killed and at least ... 25 others injured,'some seriously, when a cyclone struck Brundidge in the vicinity of Dickert's Saw Mill on the out- skirts of the city shortly after 8 a. m. this morning. The tornado levelled homes and buildings leaving the Dickert's Mill section virtually in ruins. The Brundidge cyclone was another of a series of nature's quirks that this week have visited storms and a flood on scattered sections of the southland, with a death toll of 13 and inestimable property damage. A part of Brundidge's residential section felt the effect of today's storm although the major damage was in the Mill Village. Dickert's Village is half'a mile from Brundidge. The one death reported was that of Fred Crowley, 12. A partial list of injured, most of whom were brought to Troy hospitals, follows: Mrs. Clarence Crowley* and baby boy. Mrs. W. L. Crowley, mother of Fred Crowley who was killed C. H. Patrick. Mrs. C. H. Patrick and small child. A. W. Wilhite. Mrs. Brantley Owen and small child. Mrs. Will Victory, her daughter, Willene, and a small child of the Victory family. Quita Crowley, daughter of Mrs. W. L. Crowley. Mrs. Maggie East. M..A. Beauchamp. Mrs. J. C. Beauchamp. Bell Stringer. 0. P. Thomas. Early reports from the storm area, where Chief Walter K. McAdory of the Alabama highway Patrol dispatched 20 patrolmen, said at least four were dead. With communication facilities crippled, however, thus number could not be checked. Only the edge of a Brundidge residential section was reported to have felt the power of the storm. No serious casualties were listed there. The Injured were brought to Troy hospitals by trucks and ambulances, and the hospitals filled rapidly. Estimates of the injured were from 25 to 30. Crops Injured Justice of the Peace L.R. Ray at Troy said the rich South Alaama farming section, of which Brundidge is the center, apparently sUfered heavy damage. Newly planted crops were injured. . M.N. Dodson, after a survey, said the storm came from the south striking the mill village and a fringe of Brundidge, wrecking at least two homes on Brundidge's North Main street. It continued northward, he said. Shingles were torn from scores of other homes and Dodson said it rained cats and dogs" after the storm. "Apparently," the publisher said, "there were many tenant houses outside the storm center that were wrecked or damaged. The wind cut a swath about 50 yards wide, but it did not scatter things all over Creation (did not get the rest ) * Mrs Clarence Crowley was Hazel Grimes born March 3,1919, Dau. of DeWitt & Jewell Stephens Grimes.
