Temperance and Cornelius had migrated to Montgomery County and later moved to Pike County and settled on the Blind Jack Road. They joined the Beulah Primitive Baptist Church in Pike Co., AL on 6 February 1836. Cornelious was a deacon for may years and served on committees conducting church business. The Troy Messenger, 15 April 1875 "Pike County, in the sudden death of Mr. Cornelius Smart on the 7th, lost one of her oldest and most respected citizens. He had reached the ripe old age of four score and five years and was one of the few surviving veterans of the War of 1812. During the late years of his life, he was a Deacon of Beulah Primitive Baptist Church and in all his situations with his fellowmen he exhibited the graces of a Christian character."
