W. H. STRICKLAN
Born
Sept. 19th, 1833
Died July 11th, 1878

Slowly Fading, lingering,
Dying,
Like the leaf, he passed away,
Heeding not my tears of
anguish 
Heaven has claimed its
own today

STRICKLAN, William H., 2nd Lt., 1st Lt., Capt., 15th Alabama Inf., Co. "I" 
Wounded, Fussell's Mills; age 25, sheriff; tax assessor.

“W. H. Stricklan joined the company when he was about 25 and became second 
lieutenant in 1862 and was promoted to captain in 1864. Stricklan was a good 
fighter but had one secret handicap; he could not see at night. When fighting 
occurred at night he would detail a man to explain conditions to him and he 
would command as though he could see….. Stricklan was wound in the hand and 
part of one ear was shot off in the Battle of Fussell’s Mill. He survived the 
war and was elected sheriff of Pike County.” (1)

In April 1870 he was a volunteer member of the Troy Hook and Ladder Company, 
(fire department in Troy, Pike Co., AL)
