The following article in the Alabama Journal on 9 Mar 1953: J. J. Rushing, 84 died in Montgomery, Alabama. Widow, Mrs. Ella Spradley Rushing; two daughters, Mrs. Kate Sellers and Mrs. Lewis Black; two brothers, Robert Rushing, San Antonio, Texas and Jack Rushing of Troy, Alabama; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Howard and Mrs. J. W. Redmond of Troy, Alabama. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, Alabama. In a funeral record, written by Ella, his wife: Joseph Johnston Rushing. He died 12:45 AM on March 8, 1953. His residence address was 1925 West St., Montgomery, AL & phone # 24208. He resided in Montgomery for 10 years. He was not a veteran. She was 79 years old when he died. The services were held in McGhee Funeral Home in Troy, Alabama, on March 9, 1953, at 11:00 AM. The minister officiating: Rev. R. T. McLeod. Music by Authur Brown and Glenny McLeod. In a funeral record, Ella records his name: Joseph Johnston Rushing. In the 1880 Federal Census of Pike Co., AL his name is listed as Johnson. On 18 May 2000 Foye Ivey told me that her father, Joseph, made his own eggnog for Christmas and on occasions he would put a little whiskey in the eggnog.
