He was born in Sumter county, Georgia before the family moved to Pike county in the early 1840's. He came home ill from his CSA unit and died at home on Sept. 25, 1864. He was buried somewhere in the area of his residence at the time and the location is unknown. As other members of his family died, they were buried at St. Johns Church Cemetery in SE Pike county, thus the marker for James was placed there in later years.
