Gatlin was born in 1821 in Georgia. The census in Muscogee County, Georgia indicates that he was born in Morgan County, Georgia. He was married to Sarah Swan in Talbot County, Georgia in 1845. He moved his family to Muscogee County, Georgia by 1850. He moved his family to Randolph County, Alabama by 1860. He was living with his family and working as a farmer in the Southern Division of the county. War came to the south and to the people of Alabama in 1861. John enlisted in the 46th Alabama Infantry Regiment in Company K.at Loachapoka in 1862. He died in battle at Missionary Ridge in November of 1863 during the fighting at Chattanooga.
