Johnson was born in Randolph County, Alabama in about November of 1841. His parents were Mark A. and Celia Johnson. His father is listed as born in Georgia and his mother is listed as born in North Carolina on the 1860 Census in Randolph County with a Roanoke Post Office. William is working as a farmhand along with his brothers on his father's farm. There were There were eight children listed on the census in 1860. When war came to the south and to the people of Alabama, he and his brother, Nathaniel, enlisted in Company I, The Roanoke Mitchell Invincibles, of the 13th Alabama Infantry on July 19th 1861. William was sick with Intermittent Fever and sent to Episcopal Church Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia on October the 26th 1861. He was later sent to General Hospital, Methodist Church on December 10th 1861. After his convalescence, he was detailed by the Secretary of War for duties as a nurse in the General Hospital, Camp Winder in RIchmond, Virginia on May 19 1862. He was assigned the ward master duties at the same Richmond Hospital and was on a list dated October 12 1862. He returned to his regiment by 1863. HIs regiment was assigned to General Archer's Brigade. His regiment was sent to Gettysburg and was in the fighting of the first day. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on the 1st of July 1863 along with many of his comrades including his brother, Nathaniel. He and his brother were sent to Ft. Delaware and he remained a POW until the end of the war. He was released on June 14th 1865. To be released from prison he had to sign an oath of allegiance to the United States at Ft Delaware. His description is the following: Hair - Drk, Eyes- Brown, Height 5 ft and 10 in and complexion Ruddy Place of Residence Randolph County, Alabama William returned to Randolph County, Alabama after being released from prison. He resumed his life as well as any that had endured the war and went back to farming. He was married to Martha Jane Brumbeloe in 1866. She was a daughter of another Confederate Veteran, James Henderson Brumbeloe. In 1870 the census indicates the family is living at Wedowee Post Office in Township 21 of Randolph County. By the 1880 census the family is living at Burson Beat 5 Post Office and his family had grown to 6 children. WIlliam and Martha had 14 children. Martha Jane died in 1897 and in 1900 William and his family are living in Burson's Precinct along with his four children and his sister, Indiana . By 1910 William was living with one of his daughters, Martha Jane Johnson Kirby and her husband WIlliam D, Kirby. In 1910 William moved to the Confederate Soldier's home at Mountain Creek. He was living at the Confederate Soldier's Home at Mountain Creek,Alabama when he died in 1914. His remains were returned to Randolph County for burial.
