Girardi January 2001 Updated by Linda Ayres Sep-2022 MOONFIELD CEMETERY Township 18, Range 10, Section 27 Randolph County, Alabama Authur unknown Moonfield cemetery is located on land originally belonged to Thomas Lindley. Thomas and his wife Sarah Elizabeth "Betsy" came to Randolph County in 1848. The land Thomas settled on bounty land given to him for his service in the War of 1812. He was drafted in Laurens County South Carolina courthouse and served his term at Georgetown South Carolina. According to family legend passed down several generations and told to the author. Moonfield cemetery received it name in an unusual way. In 1852 during the early evening Thomas Lindley's wife was outside their cabin. She saw a light down in the woods from her cabin and called her family out to see it. Soon as the light moved out of sight and faded away. Sarah believed it was a sign that she was going to die, and told her family that when she died, she wanted to be buried in that spot where she saw the light. The members of her family believed that the light was just the moon shinning on the area. Soon after Sarah saw the light she did die, and the family buried her in the spot where they saw the light. So, the name comes from moonlight shining on a field near their cabin. There are at least 38 unmarked graves. Flanders Thompson is listed in 1850 in Campbell County GA census in 1860 he is listed in the Randolph County AL census. It is unknown if Sarah L. Thompson died in Georgia or Alabama. Jonathan Lindley & Sarah Lindley-Thompson were the children of Thomas Lindley & Elizabeth Hall. Online cemetery records state there are members of the Mattox/Maddox family buried in this cemetery, this is doubtful. Members of the Mattox/Maddox are listed in the death records for Randolph County buried in the Hill/ McClung Cemetery. John Mattox is listed in an online record buried in this cemetery. James Mattox is buried in the Hill/McClung Cemetery Randolph County AL. James Mattox's death cert states his father as "Dan" Mattox not John. IF the father came Randolph County, he would have died between 1855-1860 in Graham Alabama near the Georgia Stateline. The Mattox family moved from Graham AL to the Rockdale area between 1871-1875 after their house was destroyed in a storm. Jacksonville AL Newspaper: Nov 28, 1876: Jos Curry [Joseph Mitchell Currie] and family of Cleburne County, Wm Lindley and Whit Maddox of Randolph County, [Stephen Whitfield Maddox s/o "Dan" Mattox] Thomas Lindley, John Hays and J.C. Mitchum of Oxford AL, King McMurray and J.L. Jinkins of Clay County have all removed to Texas. Online cemetery records state Joseph Reynolds & Keziah Russell-Reynolds are buried in this cemetery, along with Sarah Currie daughter of John W. Currie & Sarah Reynolds. After much research this is also doubtful, given the fact that Hepsebah Cemetery [Cleburne County AL] dates back to at least 1840 there is a much better chance they are buried there in unmarked graves than Moonfield.
