Girardi September 2000 RANDOLPH COUNTY CEMETERIES - Inactive Township 19 Randolph County, Alabama Located within a 12 mile strip across central Randolph County, AL. Many thanks to Diane Herren former County Historian and surveyor of the following cemeteries, who on August 27, 2000 gave her permission to submit them to the Archives. UNKNOWN CEMETERY Township 19, Range 10, Section 1 Two (2) or more unmarked graves It is impossible to determine the exact number of graves as the rocks have fallen or been knocked down. You can no longer determine what might have been headstones, footstones, etc. These graves rest under large trees on a hill in the pasture of land which once belonged to Mr. Albert Williamson and now belongs to his descendants. These graves have been located on the land since before it belonged to the Williamson Family. Site visited and information compiled on November 10, 1991. ****** McCLUNG CEMETERY Township 19, Range 10, Section 2 Three (3) unmarked graves People who are familiar with this area state that these are the graves of two McClung children and their pet dog. One of the McClung children fell from a tree and was killed; the cause of death for the other child is unknown. Later the children's pet dog died and he was buried near the two children. These graves have been on this land ever since it has belonged to the Williamson family. Is it possible that these graves were placed here in a McClung Family Cemetery at some time before the McClung-Hill Cemetery was established near this family plot? Cemetery visited and information compiled on November 10, 1991. ****** UNKNOWN CEMETERY Township 19, Range 10, Section 23/24 Two (2) unmarked graves Mrs. Jessie Bean Gabriel remembers two rock-covered graves which were once located at the back of her father's property. On the property which adjoined Mr. Wilson J. Jean's at the back was an area that everyone called the "Mary Etta Field" or "Marietta Field". The two rock-covered graves were located in this field. No one now living seems to know why the field was called this. Was this name in some way related to the graves located in it? These graves were known to be in this area in the 188os or 1890s. In later years the field became covered with timber and the graves were apparantly destroyed as those who were familiar with their location as children have been unable to find any sign of them in recent years. Information was compiled February 12, 1989. ****** BEAN FAMILY CEMETERY Township 19, Range 10, Section 34 This cemetery consisted of 54 unmarked graves, many of which are very difficult to locate now and some of which have been destroyed. Two (2) of the unmarked graves are surrounded by a high rock wall. These are the graves of Wilson Faulkner and Frances Burdette Faulkner. One (1) of the unmarked graves at the head of their grave is that of Monroe Bean, their grandson and the son of Willey Bean and Amanda Faulkner Bean. No one is sure but family members believe that Amanda Faulkner Bean is buried here. They also believe that Humphries Burdette, Frances Burdette Faulkner's father, is buried here. Site was visited and information compiled on February 12, 1989. UNMARKED GRAVES: Death Records: Bettie Hull Female, White, Married Age 25-0-0 Died Sep 25, 1889 ****** BALL/BALD CEMETERY Township 19, Range 11, Section 6 Two (2) unmarked graves Two large mounds of dirt are all that now mark these two graves. It is known that these graves were place here before 1900, but no one has been able to determine any exact dates. These graves at times rest in the shadows of a mountain called Ball or Bald Mountain. The mountain is named for the family which at one time owned most of the land in this area. Most of the elderly people that I talked with state that they were always told that these graves were members of the Ball or Bald families. Site was visited and information compiled February 15, 1992. ****** UNKNOWN CEMETERY Township 19, Range 11, Section 6 It is impossible to determine the exact number of unmarked graves in this cemetery due to the amount of growth and the condition of this entire area. We counted 3 graves marked with rocks and at least three rock covered graves. There are at least ten (10) or more unmarked graves in this cemetery. This cemetery can be easily found as it rests under the two large oak trees which can easily be seen from the highway or from the dirt road which meet near these trees. Ten (10) or more unmarked graves Site visited on February 9, 1992. ****** ROCKDALE CEMETERY - AFRICAN AMERICAN Township 19, Range 11, Section 9 This cemetery was covered with small bushes, weeds and honeysuckle, but I was able to identify three graves which were in a row beside each other. Some of the graves had been dug into and the rocks used as markers were very difficult to locate. We found stones that could have possibly been markers for another eight (8) graves, but it was impossible to obtain an exact count of the number of graves here. People who have grown up here and are familiar with this cemetery indicate that it is an old colored cemetery. Site was visited and information compiled on March 14, 1989. UNMARKED GRAVES: Death Records: Jane Gaston -Female, Black, Widow; Age 76-0-0 Died Dec 15, 1895 ****** McKEEN FAMILY CEMETERY Township 19, Range 11, Section 14 McKeen, H. U. The approximate location of this cemetery can still be found because it rested near an old homestead. The remains of the old homestead and the old chimney can still be easily seen. Site was visited and information was collected on January 25, 1992. ****** BERRYMAN BOLT CEMETERY Township 19, Range 11, Section 27 This family cemetery was known to be the burial site for Berryman Bolt, born November 23, 1806 - Died ???; Permelia Dial Bolt, his wife - Born CA 1811 - Died ???; and William W. Bolt, their son, born CA 1838 - Died ???. There are probably other graves here, but I have no documentation on them and have been unable to locate the cemetery to check for any additional marked or unmarked graves. 1850 Census of Randolph Co, AL shows: Berryman Bolt Age 45 Born in GA; Permelia Age 40 Born in GA; James Age 18 Born in GA; John Age 16 Born in GA; William Age 14 Born in GA; Elizabeth Age 12 Born in AL; Winston Age 10 Born in AL; Robert Age 8 Born in AL; Sarah Age 6 Born in AL; Stephen W.H. Aged 64 years One (1) unmarked grave covered with rocks People who own the land state that they were told that this grave is the grave of one of the sons of P.H. and Mary J. Taylor who died after his parents and was buried with them in this family cemetery. Transcription was completed April 8, 1990. 1850 Census Randolph Co, AL shows: Paschal H. Taylor 43 born in GA; Jane 34 born in GA; William 17 born in GA; John 14 born in GA; Martha 12 born in GA; Oliver 10 born in GA; James 8 born in GA; Owen 6 born in AL; Mary 4 born in AL; Peter 2 born in AL; Shady (F) born in AL. The birthplaces of the children given in this census would idicate that Paschal H. and Mary Jane Taylor came to Alabama between 1842 and 1845. If Mary J. Taylor died at the age of 64, she died about 1881. If Paschal H. Taylor died at the age of 74 years, he died about 1882. ****** UNKNOWN CEMETERY Township 19, Range 11, Section 31 This unknown cemetery was apparently in this location near the river at an earlier date. However, when we visited the site and tried to locate it, we could find no sign of the cemetery. Thus, we are not sure if it has been destroyed, overtaken by time and nature, or lost due to the waters of Harris Dam. Number of graves is unknown. Site was visited on January 9, 1992. ****** OLD PROVIDENCE CEMETERY Township 19, Range 12, Section 1 The first location of Providence Baptist Church was on property now owned by the W. I. Mote family. The exact location of the cemetery of this church is unknown, but it is hoped that knowing that it was located on the W. I. Mote property might be of help to anyone who is interested in this cemetery. Some members of the Mote family who vaguely remember this cemetery state that there were nine or ten unmarked graves in this cemetery. They remember no graves with names on them and cannot identify any of the graves. Site was visited and information was compiled on April 1, 1989 ****** TRAYLOR FAMILY CEMETERY Township 19, Range 12, Section 18 Smitch, Jourdan No Dates [Jordan Smith, Veteran War of 1812; Drew Pension] McKeen, Robert D. Members of the family who have owned this land for years say they can never remember anyone being able to identify these graves. They know from the family members that the graves were here before 1900. This is supposedly the cemetery used for the area. There are no marked graves in this cemetery. I could locate nothing except a few scattered field stones. One burial listed in early death records as being buried at Bethel is probably buried in this cemetery. Gracie McPherson Female, Black; Age 4-0-0 Died Aug 21, 1889 Effie McPherson Female, Black; Age 3-0-0 Died Jul 8, 1898 Site was visited on January 18, 1989. SMITH FAMILY CEMETERY Township 19, Range 13, Section 7 This cemetery has six unmarked graves which are enclosed in a single large lot. The only identification or data of any kind in this cemetery is the word "SMITH" engraved in one wail of the lot. The graves in this cemetery were identified for me by a descendant of those buried here. The six graves are those of David Murphy Smith and his wife, his son Charles Smith and his wife, and two of Charles' children. The children have been identified as an infant daughter and a son Fred. Fred died at the age of eight months in June, 1901. The cause of his death was given as Scarlatina. The 1860 Randolph County, Alabama Census shows: D. M. Smith Age 45 (Born in GA) Martha Age 42 (Born in SC) James Age 21 (All children born in AL) John Age 17 Mary A. Age 13 Elizabeth Age 11 M. J. Age 8 David Age 7 Charles Age 3 Joseph Age 2 George A. There is a handmade cement marker between the two graves. The only data that I could find and bring out enough to read was "W. YANCEY" on one side of the cement marker on the lower level. I am sure that when this handmade marker was new it contained much more information. I believe that these graves are the graves of two of the children of William and Elizabeth Yancey, who are buried in the Bethel East Baptist Church Cemetery about one mile from this family cemetery. The 1860 Randolph County, Alabama Census shows: Mary A. Yancey----Age 35 (Born in GA) W. M. Age 15 (Born in GA) Sarah A. Age 8 (Born in GA) The 1870 Randolph County, Alabama Census shows: William Yancey----Age 23 (Born in GA) Elizabeth Age 28 (Born in AL) Georgia Age 3 (All children born in AL) Susan Age 2 William Age 2/12 Site visited and data compiled on February 22, 1992. ****** PARMER GRAVE Township 19, Range 13, Section 8 This unmarked grave is the grave of John Simie Parmer. Simie was the son of James Henry Parmer and Lishie Prescott Parmer. He was born on September 27, 1873. Family stories state that Simie never wanted to leave home or go anywhere. When he did leave home to go somewhere for a visit or whatever, he would cry and beg to go back home. In about 1882-1883 at the age of 9-10 years old, John Simie Parmer died. His parents knew of his love for home and his behavior when he was away from home. When the heart-broken parents thought of all this, they could not bear to have Simie taken away from his home to some other place for burial. John Simie Parmer was thus buried in the back yard of the Parmer home near Bethel. One (1) unmarked grave. Site was visited and information was compiled on February 22, 1992. ****** MOORE FAMIlY CEMETERY Township 19, Range 13, Section 8 Moore, Hamilton Dec. 22, 1821 Sep. 23, 1909 Moore, L.C. (Wife of H.K.
