Submitted by Marilyn M. Girardi MMGir@aol.com PERRYMAN CEMETERY Township 22, Range 10, Section 12 This cemetery of about twenty (20) unmarked graves was shown to us by Mr. Jim Smith, a gentleman who has always lived in the Wadley area. The only marking of any kind that we could locate in this cemetery was one small marble marker on which was written the initials "D.W.H.". Some of the graves were marked with fieldstones at the head and/or foot; some of them were covered with rocks; some of them were built up using rocks. None of them had any indentifying data of any kind. Mr. Smith states that he remembers walking in this cemetery as a child. At that time one of the graves had a marker with the name Perryman. Thus, he has always known this as the Perryman Cemetery. This cemetery is now badly overgrown with trees and bushes and has suffered repeated vandalism. From the current condition of the cemetery, I would imagine that any markers that may have stood marking these graves have been removed during the times that this cemetery has been vandalized. Approximately twenty (20) unmarked graves Site was visited on February 23, 1992. ****** GALILEE PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY - African American Township 22, Range 11, Section 6 Walker, Irena D. It is known that there were at one time many graves in this cemetery which was relocated by descendants of Willis and Elizabeth Wood. This cemetery was reclaimed by nature for many years until it was located by Mrs. Lenda McCain, Mrs. Irene Kirk and Miss Ione Blake. When it was found it was in deplorable condition, covered with briars, honeysuckle vines, and trash and was part of a hog lot. The descendants of Willis Wood have now reclaimed it and it is a beautiful cemetery, but only a few of the graves can now be found and identified. All of the marked graves in this cemetery are members of the family of Willis Wood. Two of the graves are the graves of Willis Wood and his wife Elizabeth Cochran Wood. Another grave is that of William Fletcher Haynes, the husband of Eliza Hall Wood. Piercie Truett and Jessie Truett, the two children's graves, were the grandchildren of William Fletcher Haynes and Eliza Hall Wood Haynes, the children of Era Electra Haynes Truett and John Warren Truett. The historical marker in this cemetery gives much of the early history of Randolph County as it tells of the service of Willis Wood to this county. Willis Wood and Elizabeth Cochran Wood were also the parents of the first white child born in Randolph County--Eliza Hall Wood, who was born November 10, 1833. One of the unmarked graves in this cemetery is known to be the grave of Eliza Hall Wood Haynes, who was born on November 10, 1833. She married Fletcher William Haynes. She died on May 1, 1897. The children of Willis Wood and Elizabeth Cochran Wood are listed on the marker of Elizabeth Cochran Wood. Other information known about these children is given below: Arnton--Married Ann Pate, sister of G.G. Pate Buried at High Pine Baptist Church Polly Jane-Married Bob Latimer North Alabama Cheatle-Married Mickle Eliza Hall-Married William Fletcher Haynes Buried Willis Wood Cemetery Elizabeth-Married Bradford Hinton Buried at Macedonia Baptist Church William-Married ???? Gay Moved to Texas Martin-Died in the Civil War George- Some of the families descended from these children are Wood, Haynes, Hinton, Kitchens, Gay, Kilgore, Swann, McMurray, Herren, Yates, Stewart, Landers, Latimer, Pate, Mickle, Lovvorn, Cyrus and many others. UNMARKED GRAVES: [Death Records]: Early death records show the deaths and burials below for High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery. However, since one of those shown is Fletcher V. Haynes, who is known to be buried in the Willis Wood Cemetery, I feel that this may at one time have been called the High Pine Cemetery. I am unsure if these deaths are buried in the High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery or in the Willis Wood Cemetery; thus, I am including this list in both of the cemeteries.
