ALGenWeb File Manager - Carolyn Golowka -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by William Fischer, Jr. March 2001 Randolph County, Alabama was early organized into Beats (similar to divisions such as "townships"or "wards") for governmental/political purposes (i.e. voter registration, taxation, census taking). From several notices published in The Roanoke Leader newspaper, including "Registration Notice" on page 1 of the 12 Nov 1919 issue, the following Beat territories can be roughly determined. While the following is particular for 1919-1920, Beats probably went through little reorganization in the early decades of the twentieth century. Given the rural nature of Randolph county, some notices list a store as the prominent landmark and not an actual town/village. Beat numbers appear to go in a general north to south direction, with the noted exception of Newell, which must have been organized at a later date. Beat and general location: 01 -- Graham 02 -- Cedron 03 -- Milner 04 -- Lamar/Sewell 05 -- Omaha/Wehadkee 06 -- Wedowee 07 -- Ofelia 08 -- Wadley/Almond 09 -- Level Road/Forrester's Chapel/Gibson's Store/Cardwell's Store 10 -- Roanoke 11 -- Rock Mills 12 -- Bacon Level 13 -- Christiana/Fulcer's Store/A.
