It at once proceeded to Virginia. Ordered to Yorktown, it was there brigaded under General Gabriel J. Rains. It lay at that place until the army fell back on Richmond the following spring. At Seven Pines, the regiment was engaged warmly and suffered 7 k and 45 w. Held in reserve during the battles in front of Richmond, it was nevertheless subjected there to a destructive fire from which it suffered severely (101 k and w). As part of General James J. Archer's Brigade, under General Alfred H. Colquitt of Georgia, the regiment took part in the first Maryland campaign, losing lightly at Boonsboro and then heavily at Sharpsburg. The winter was passed on the Rappahannock, and its monotony was relieved by the repulse of the Union General Ambrose Burnside at Fredericksburg, of which the 13th was a witness; and where it suffered lightly. Col. B. D. Fry led the brigade in the assault on Union General Joseph Hooker at Chancellorsville, and there the 13th lost 140 of the 460 men with which it went into the battle. It was in the Pennsylvania campaign, and at Gettysburg, the regiment suffered over 50% casualties of the 308 engaged. Retiring to Virginia, the 13th passed the winter of 1863-1864 mostly in camp. At The Wilderness, the regiment actively participated, and their loss was comparatively heavy. It took part in the subsequent operations around Petersburg, being now in the brigade of General John C. C. Sanders of Greene (8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 14th Alabama regiments) -- subsequently commanded by General W. H. Forney of Calhoun. Under Col. James Aiken, the remnant of 6 officers and 85 men surrendered at Appomattox. Of the 1245 men on the rolls, about 150 were killed in battle, or died of wounds; 275 died of disease; 64 were transferred; and 202 were discharged. Field and staff officers: Cols. Birkett D. Fry (Tallapoosa; wounded, Seven Pines, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg; captured, Gettysburg; promoted); James Aiken (Randolph); Lt. Cols. Julius C. B. Mitchell (Montgomery; resigned); Reginald H. Dawson (Wilcox; resigned); William H. Betts (Macon; resigned); James Aiken (wounded, Chancellorsville, Bristow Station; promoted); Majors Samuel B. Marks (Montgomery; resigned); William H. Betts (promoted); James Aiken (promoted); John T. Smith (Randolph; KIA, Chancellorsville); and Adjutants James D. Clark (Wilcox; transferred to line); John Rentz (Wilcox; KIA, Sharpsburg); T. W. S. Hendon (Randolph; wounded, Chancellorsville; retired); L. P. Broughton (Butler; KIA, The Wilderness) Smith, John T. No Dates MAJOR 13 AL REGT CSA 1861-1865 Confederate Iron Cross-at the Roanoke Baptist Cemetery Randolph County Alabama Muster Roll of Company D, 13th Alabama Regiment ''The Randolph Mountaineers'' Aiken, James Captain [Born 1830, died in Gadsden Alabama] He had moved from South Carolina to Randolph County, Alabama in 1854. He raised a company of troops there for Confederate service, and was elected Captain, Company D, in the 13th Alabama on 19 July 1861. He was promoted to Major of the regiment on 11 June 1862. It is not clear where Major Aiken was on 17 September. The official records show that Captain Reaves, Company D, took command of the 13th Alabama as the next senior man after Lt Colonel Betts was wounded, suggesting Aiken was not with the Regiment. The remainder of the War: He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 14 January 1863, on Lt. Col Betts' resignation, and Colonel on 24 May 1864. He was wounded in action at Chancellorsville (May 1863) and Bristoe Station (October 1863) in the course of his service. He was the final commander of the 13th, being Colonel at the surrender with the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865 (he may have been captured at High Bridge, VA, on 6 or 7 April 1865). Gent, Henry C. 1st Lieutenant Reaves, Algernon Sidney 2nd Lieutenant/Captain [Born 1839, died 1929, buried Hartsville TN] From Randolph County, Alabama, he left Bowden College (GA) and was elected Lieutenant of a company raised by Captain James Aiken (later Major, Lt Colonel, Colonel of the 13th), soon Company D, at Montgomery in July 1861. He's listed in some sources as Major at Sharpsburg, but was Captain, Company D. He succeded to command of the Regiment after both Colonel Fry and Lt Colonel Betts were wounded in action on 17 September. Reaves was himself reported wounded at Sharpsburg. He was Captain, and still in command of the Regiment at Chancellorsville, but may after have been appointed Major. "At Gettysburg, in Archer's Brigade, he led his regiment [presumably after Col. Fry's wounding] in the famous Pickett's charge, which resulted in the loss of four-fifths of his men. He himself was severely wounded both at Gettysburg and Sharpsburg (Antietam), and in the Wilderness was captured and kept a prisoner until the close of the war. After being in the 'mercantile' business in Alabama, in 1868 he moved to Hartsville, Tennessee, where he bought the Hart family farm and married Mittie Hart. In 1898 he was appointed Colonel of the 3rd US Volunteer Infantry for the Spanish-American War, and saw occupation duty in Santiago, Cuba until discharged in December 1898. He moved to Oklahoma and was one of the founders of the city of Lawton in 1901. Kemp, Mark W. 2nd Lieutenant Absent Captured: Chancellorsville, 1863/05/03, Wounded: Gettysburg, 1863/07/01.
