The Montgomery Advertiser April 15, 1879
The Wedowee Journal states last Wednesday night, James Newby and Simeon I Smith, 
the latter a negro, made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from our jail. By some 
means they set fire to the inside part of the wall, which is made of wood, and 
burned through the plank, to the brick. They then began to pick through the 
brick, with an old Knife, it is thought, and were nearly through when they were 
discovered and stopped.
