Yeggmen drilled their way into the Bank of Wedowee early Tuesday and escaped with currency and silver estimated by bank officials at $20,000. The robbery took place at 3 a.m. but was not discovered until Dr. J. G. Swann, president and cashier, opened the bank for the day. T. J. Still, vice president said several residents reported hearing a noise in the vicinity of the bank at 3 a. m. but failed to investigate. He said the yeggmen were believed to have escaped in an automobile. Entrance to the bank was gained through a rear window, Still said an electric or acetylene torch was used in drilling through the vault door. The bank officials said the loss was fully covered and that the institution was carrying on business Tuesday as usual. This is the second robbery that has occurred in Wedowee during the past few days. On Thursday night of last week, the Wedowee Drug Store and the store of J. W. Carlisle were broken into watches, cigarettes, candy, etc., and $5.00 in money were taken from the drug store and a number of dresses and overalls were taken from Mr. Carlisles store. An attempt was made to enter the store of R. M. Swann during the same night, but since the door was barred on the inside in addition to being locked, the attempt ended in failure.
