All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Linda Ayres http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00031.html#0007674 April 8, 2023, 10:39 am The Macon Telegraph June 30, 1958 Three men robbed a department store here of $3000-$4000 Saturday night but two suspects were recaptured in Georgia and the loot recovered police said Sunday Officers identified those suspects caught as Charles Dean McGregory Cartersville Ga., a fugitive from the Georgia State Prison and William Grady 32 who was released from the Randolph County Jail at Wedowee 10 days ago. The third man was not immediately identified. Officials said the trio broke into the Belk Gallant department store through the roof cracked the safe and fled. The Highway Patrol gave chase to the fugitives near the Georgia line when they spotted their speeding car but patrolmen were apparently unaware of the robbery at the time. The bandits fled into Georgia and their car wrecked near Franklin Ga about 20 miles across the state line Grady and McGregory were captured but the third man escaped. McGregory refused to return to Alabama of his own will and extradition proceedings were begun to bring him here. Additional Comments: Note: The Belk store was near the Old Phillip's brother's hardware store in old Roanoke. The store closed in the 1980's.
