TAYLOR the 80-acre farm off of which the “Foot-pad” church lot and burying-ground is taken, on the Roanoke-Wedowee road, to Ben SMEDLEY, a hustling negro [sic] farmer on Mr. C. W. AVERY’s place near Stroud [Chambers County]. SMEDLEY is a good example to others of his race as to what a negro can do. He works, saves his money, is good for his debts, and is now able to purchase a farm of his own. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 27 October 1915, p.1] ---------- The “Foot-pad” Church is now more commonly known as Union Hill Baptist Church, located about three miles northwest of Roanoke.
