R. Hood to the chair, and Capt. J. C. Wright as Secretary. By request of the Chair, Dr. J. H. Davis explained the object of the meeting. On motion, a committee of seven was appointed to draft a platform and resolutions, for this Convention whereupon Baid Committee returned the following platform and resolutions, which were read and adopted by the Convention. Whereas the people of Randolph in common with the other counties of the State of Alabama, will soon be called upon elect a Governor, Lieutenant Governor Secretary of State, Treasurer, Attorney General, Superintendent of Education, Members of the lower house of the United States Congress and members of the State's Legislature of Alabama. We the Conservative Democratic citizens of Randolph County, in Convention assembled, do hereby declare, that it is the duty of the citizens of all free governments. 1. To secure and maintain equal rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness among all its subjects. 2. To secure and maintain an equal and fair distribution of the burdens of taxation upon all. 3. To see that-the affairs of the Government are administered and conducted in the most economical manner. 4. To abstain from all unconstitutional, unjust, class legislation, and all inequality in the making and administering of the law. 5. To encourage the most liberal and amicable feelings among all classes, and to frown down every effort to incite domestic insurrections and all similar disturbances. 6. That it is the duty of the Democratic Conservative party of Alabama to abide by all laws now in force until they be repealed by proper legislation or decided unconstitutional by the proper tribunal. To these principles we, the Democratic Conservative people of Randolph County, Ala., without regard to former parties, hereby most solemnly pledge ourselves. The following resolutions, by Dr. J. H. Davis, were read unanimously adopted. That it is the sense of this meeting that it is the imperative duty of every voting citizen of Alabama who has not registered his name as a voter, to do so at once, and unite with the Democratic Conservative party of old in putting down the obnoxious and oppressive laws resting upon us, which were instigated by the party now in power. That this meeting earnestly and respectfully suggests to the Democratic Conservative Convention to be held in Opelika, Ala., on the 12th day of September next, the propriety of nominating Judge John Henderson, of Talladega, Ala., as a candidate1 for Congress in the third Congressional district. On motion a committee of five was appointed to select delegates to represent us in the ensuing State and District Conventions, whereas said committee for STATE CONVENTION. Dr. J. H. Davis, Dr. W. L. Heflin, F. Rieke, Dr. J. R. Hood, J. W. Thomason, G. W. Taylor, G. G. Pate, W. H. Burgess, Henry Johnson, C. J. Ussery. For District Convention John Reaves, D. L. Davis, Dr. W. L. Heflin, G. W. Taylor, W. D. Heaton, Thos. Weathers, J.C. Wright, J. W. Lancaster, E. H. Disharoom, Wilson Falkner, W. A. Handley, James Amos, Dr. J. H. Davis, F. Rieke, R. H. Bolt, J. F. M. Davis, John N. Hill.
