Raonoke Leader March 25, 1942
According to Maintenance Engineer Marvin Taylor, of the State Highway Department, 
State Road No. 48, between Wedowee, county seat of Randolph County, and Lineville 
in Clay County, was closed Saturday night when the county ferry on the Tallapoosa 
River sank. Reports are that the ferry operator had tied up the ferry for the 
night and retired. During the night the river rose six feet in two hours because 
of the heavy rains above that point. The ferry, being tied, could not rise with 
the water. Traffic is being detoured around by Hollis School House until the 
ferry can be floated or some other arrangement made.
