Mr. Stewart, who lived in Anniston, is said to have parked his truck near Bowens house and to have approached the house through the woods. Reportedly, he had been drinking. According to the report given by members of the Bowen family, Stewart and Bowen engaged in an argument over money, and Stewart threatened violent action. Coroner W. V. Cockrell states that When he reached the scene, Mr. Bowens body was found lying face-down in the front door, with an automatic 12-guage shotgun beneath him. He had been hit by five bullets. Mr. Stewarts body was found in the kitchen, his hand clutching a 32-calibre pistol. One shotgun blast had torn a hole in the middle of his chest. Investigating officers report that so far as they have been able to learn, there were no eye-witnesses to the shooting. Anniston Star: A gun duel which claimed the lives of two men, one an Anniston, at Martha's Crossroads in Randolph County Wednesday was being investigated today by Sheriff T. O. Kirby. The dead men were identified by Sheriff Kirby is Newt Stewart, 55. an Anniston truck driver, and Jim Bowen, 50, a farmer, who lived near Martha's Crossroads Both men died from gunshot wounds,' the Sheriff said Stewart from a single shotgun blast, and Bowen from five 32 caliber pistol wounds. Relatives of Bowen found the bodies at his residence, but no eyewitnesses to the shooting have been found, Sheriff Kirby Mid.
