[From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 15 Apr 1903, p.3] ---------------------------- THE MEDAL CONTEST ---------------------------- A large audience assembled in the court house in LaFayette last Friday evening to witness the contest in declamation for the gold medal offered by A W HOLSTUN, editor of the LaFayette Sun, to the successful representative of the schools of East Alabama. The exercises were presided over by Mr HOLSTUN, who introduced the following speakers: Messrs SESSIONS, of Milltown, GAUNTT, of Welsh, COLLEY, of Truett, COOK, of Roanoke, HURST, of Stroud, NORMAN, of West Point [GA], SMITH, of Lanett, and VEAZY, of LaFayette. The young men showed considerable talent, and with continued training a number of good orators could be developed in the class. The committee of judges, composed of Messrs W G JARRELL, C Y KENNEDY and O H STEVENSON, by a majority vote awarded the medal to Henry HURST, of Stroud, and unanimously made honorable mention of Frank NORMAN, of West Point. The medal was awarded by Prof L M STEVENSON. Roanoke’s representative, Jesse COOK, reflected credit upon himself and Roanoke College, and was given a high grade by the committee. This contest, if perpetuated, would result in much pleasure and practical good. Brother HOLSTUN’s generosity should be emulated. ---------------------------- LOCAL NEWS AND COMMENT ---------------------------- While in LaFayette last week this editor [O. H. STEVENSON] was the recipient of special courtesies from A W HOLSTUN and S H OLIVER, editor and job foreman of the Sun, respectively, and also from Mr and Mrs E M OLIVER, in whose delightful home we were entertained. In addition to being old-time friends, Mr and Mrs OLIVER have been regular readers of The Leader from its establishment, and their kind words concerning it are always a source of encouragement. ------- The contest in LaFayette Friday evening was attended from this place by Miss Florie PURCELL (who had a place on the program the following day), L M and O H STEVENSON, Jesse COOK, Joe HOLDER, Claud USSERY, Bob Lee BELCHER, Clare PURCELL and J D HOOPER.
