MART GREEN WAYLAID SATURDAY EVE BY TWO YOUTHS A very ugly affair occurred near Roanoke Saturday night when Mr. J. Mart Green was waylaid and fired upon, barely escaping with his life. Mr. Green lives on Kidd Hill, four miles out on the highway to Wedowee. He came to town late with a lood of wood and was returning home on his wagon, reaching the top of the hill just north of Jones Creek at about 8 o'clock when he was fired upon without warning by two young men hid on the east side of the road. The bullet pierced Mr. Green's cap and tore a trench through the back of his head near the crown. Mr. Green shouted at his assailants and they ran over the hill. The moon was nearly in the full but he could not recognize them. Though bleeding profusely the wounded man drove on home. He then went to the house of the nearest neighbor Mr. John L. Rice who had come up about ten minutes behind him and asked whether he had seen anything of the men who attacked him. Rice recalled seeing two fellows crossing the road behind him near the foot of the Blake Hill. It seems that the youths who did the waylaying crawled into a small house on Mr. Blake's place and slept in the fodder. When he went there the next morning he found a shoe which he carried to the house. Later Wesley Whitten and Monroe Shearer, white boys who claim to be less than sixteen years of age, went to the house and called for the shoe. When the circumstances were learned they were arrested and carried to jail in Wedowee. Wes Whitten, who is a son of Bill Whitten, confessed to doing the shooting but claims that the shot was fired to scare adn traveler and make him run. Other reports are to the effect that the boys had been discussing in town a short while before how to get some money. Monroe Shearer is the son Wyatt Shearer. They had been living in the vicinity of the crime. Tuesday morning the sheriff brought Whitten down to the scene of the escapade and later carried the officer to where the pistol had been hidden after the shooting. It is a 38 S.& W. This distressing affair is to be regretted by everyone. The only gratifying feature of it is that Mr. Green escaped with his life, although by the closest sort of a margin. ----- THREE NEGROES TAKEN WITH LIQUOR SUNDAY BY SHERIFF'S FORCES Sheriff Ballard with Deputies Cofield and Seegar went down into Bacon Level beat near the Georgia line on Sunday morning and arrested three negroes; Eddie B. Brewer, Shug Glenn and Neal Clark, alias Whatley. It is alleged that these negroes were in an old house dealing out whiskey. The officers decided to remain in the shack awhile and await developments. It was not long before seven other negroes had called in succession and been handcuffed to the ones already taken. One white man, it is said, got close enough to be recognized, then fled. The negroes having the liquor in charge were brought to Roanoke with over six gallons of liquor which was poured out on the streets. The men were then taken to jail in Wedowee. ---- MELVIN EDWARDS SLAIN BY LEE KITTLE IN NORTH RANDOLPH COUNTY Another tragedy is reported in Randolph county on the line of beats 4 and 14 near where Mr. G.Z. Edwards was killed by his son on Sept. 7th. This time, Melvin Edwards, son of the slain man, was the one to meet a violent death. It was his brother Milton who killed the senior Edwards last month. Lee Kittle was the slayer of Melvin Edwards. Our information is that Sam Kittle had a mortgage on some cotton raised by the Edwards boys and that some trouble arose over this fact last Saturday night about nine o'clock when Melvin and Milton Edwards went to the home of Sam Kittle. It is reported that the latter was threatened by the boys if he did not deliver the mortgage to them. The shooting began and it is claimed that this was done by Lee Kittle, brother of Sam, and by Milton Edwards. Melvin Edwards was shot through the head and lived only six hours. Other shots were exchanged but noe of these took effect. Kittle sent for the sheriff and surrendered. Edwards also submitted to arrest. They were carried to Wedowee and Monday had a preliminary hearing before Judge Moore. Kittle's bond was set at $1,000. and Edwards bond at $500. The former, we learn made bail but the latter, at last report we have, is still in jail. ----- MR. J.E. BARKER'S MOTHER DIED IN GEORGIA ON MONDAY Mr. John E.
