We wish for them a happy married life. --- DEATH OF MRS. O.W. IRWIN IN SHEFFIELD LAST WEEK The Tri-Cities-Daily last week reported the death of Mrs. O.W. Irwin, formerly of this county, who died in a hospital in Sheffield after a weeks illness. She is survived by her husband and two small children. She was 23 years of age. Interment was in Sheffield cemetery. Friends and acquaintances of the deceased among our readers will regret to learn of her untimely death. --- HAYWOOD News June 1st Mr. Emmet Kirby who has the fever is improving now. --- The death Angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Orbie Willingham last Thursday and took their darling little Merilee. She was two years, eleven months and one day old. The good people and the physician did all they could to save her, but in vain. --- MOUNT OLIVE News Mr. and Mrs. Denson Burdett were in our vicinity on Sunday. The latter was formerly known as Miss Ethel Beaird who helped so much in the Sunday school here. --- LOCAL News A marriage of interest was that of Miss Dora Amos of Evergreen and Mr. Charles H. Traylor of Wedowee which took place at 6 o'clock Wednesday morning, June 3rd at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Prescott in Wedowee. The ceremony was performed by Judge E.M. Moore. ---- Mr. W.E. Bosworth, an aged and prominent citizen of LaFayette, died suddenly at his home Tuesday morning. He will be buried at three in the afternoon with Masonic honors in LaFayette. --- STANDING ROCK News June 1st Mrs. Wiley Gay was carried from here to the Knight Sanitorium on Saturday for an operation for appendicitis. Last reports are that she is doing nicely. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. G.M. Reaves came over from LaGrange yesterday to visit Mr. and Mrs. W.B.Rodgers. Mr. Reaves is an uncle of Mr. Rodgers and is 80 years of age. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 10, 1925 (Note: There are several large portions of the newspaper with articles obviously cut out of the newspaper on this microfilm roll for this newspaper issue) LOCAL News Mrs. Josey returned to her home in Andalusia yesterday after staying three weeks with her daughter Mrs. McConnico. --- Joe Rucker of Virginia, adopted son of Rev. J.W. Rucker, is spending some time visiting in Roanoke and LaFayette. He made the trip down here on a motorcycle in about two days. --- CARD OF THANKS Words cannot express my gratitude to the doctor and ministers and the many friends who have been so good to us in our great loss of husband and father. He is a son-in- law of Mr. Tom Mize who lives near Forester's Bridge. Mr. Rodgers reported fine rains in Texas and the crops are very flattering. --- HOPEWELL News June 8th Mr. John Yates of Wedowee spent Saturday with his daughter Mrs. Lula Pike. --- SPRINGFIELD News June 8th This community was very much shocked last Wednesday by the sudden death of Mr. F.B. Barrett. He is survived by a wife and two sons. Interment was at Lebanon on Thursday, the funeral being conducted by Rev. Oliver Moore. Mr. Barrett had for a long time been a faithful member of the Christian church. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our heartfelt thanks and apprecation to our many dear friends of Birmingham, Wadley and Roanoke for their kindness and the many beautiful floral offerings during the illness and death of our dear wife, daughter and sister. Bell of Bessemer are making a visit of two weeks to Mrs. Bell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Jones. --- Ben McDow and Walter Culp have found work for the summer at Detroit, Michigan. --- Mr. and Mrs. F.S. Screws arrived last night from Winter Haven, Fla., and have taken rooms at Mr. Durham's. They will make this place their home for a while. --- HOBSON News June 8th Mr. and Mrs. Bud Green and daughter of Gallaver, Fla., are visiting Mr. Green's mother who is very ill. --- STANDING ROCK June 8th Mrs. Robert L. Bonner passed away Thursday, June 4th. She was 51 years old last December. She had been a sufferer for five years, most of the time confined to her bed. A good woman has passed away. She joined the Methodist church early in life. In her active days she was loyal to her church, a member of the Woman's Missionary Society. No one more devoted to her family than was Mrs. Bonner. She had many friends and all spoke well of her. She leaves a husband, four children, many loved ones and a host of friends to mourn their loss. We will miss her, but we know where to find her. Mr. and Mrs. John Sloan, Messrs. Charles and Louis Sloan of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ward, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ward of Columbus, were called here Thursday the death of Mrs. Bonner. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ward remained over this week with the former's parents. ---- Messrs. J.H. and Elmer Hines were called to Lineville last Wednesday by the serious illness of the former's daughter Mrs. Sam Oliver. --- SAM DURROUGH KILLED IN GEORGIA ON SUNDAY Last Sunday near Texas, Georgia, Sam Durrough was killed by Lon George. The latter as an officer, was searching the former's vehicle for whiskey, we are informed and was attacked by Durrough, it is said. The slain man formerly lived in Randolph County. Mr. George is said to have been very vigilant in the interest of law enforcement. He was carried to the Carroll county jail to await a preliminary trial. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. Maggie Askew of Newnan is spending the week with her sister Mrs. Turbeville and her father Mr. Robert Brown. --- The home of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Duke was the scene of a pretty wedding on Tuesday afternoon when MIss Marijon Liles became the bride of Mr. Norman E. Williams of Florence, Ala. Rev. S.T. Slayton performed the ceremony. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 17, 1925 PRELIMINARY TRIAL OF LON GEORGE HELD Lon George, prohibition enforcement officer of Heard County, Georgia, who killed Sam Durrough on June 7th, had a preliminary trial in Franklin, Ga., yesterday before three justices of the peace and was held for voluntary manslaughter under a bond of $3000. which me made. --- AGED GENTLEMAN HAD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION SUNDAY AT WOODLAND; HE IS 79 YEARS OLD The family and other relatives of Mr. Thomas J. McCarley honored him last Sunday in a becoming celebration of his brithday, he having reached on Friday before the 79th milestone on the road of life. The celebration was held at the former old homestead in Lamar beat, where he had lived 50 years, now owned by his grandson, H.L. McCarley. There were present his three sons, A.C. McCarley of Auburn and A.E. and J.L. McCarley of Lamar. A daughter living in Pennsylvania could not be present. Thirteen grandchildren and twelve great- grandchildren were numbered among the 105 persons present, and all but five of the number were connected with the McCarley family. Several aged people were present, among the number being Rev. I.N. Daniel who delivered a discourse at three in the afternoon, following the sumptuous noon meal. Mr. McCarley, familiarly called "Uncle Tom", is one of the best citizens of the county and a devoted member of the Baptist church. He is a veteran solider of the Confederate Army and is still in the enjoyment of reasonable health. He came to Roanoke Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. A.C. McCarley and after enjoying the services at the Baptist church, proceeded with them to Auburn where he spends part of his time. --- LOCAL News Robert J. Camp and famly arrived in the upper part of the county, their former home, last Friday, coming from the Rio Grande valley in a car in one week's time. Mr. Camp sold his interests there and expects to locate in this vicinity. --- Mr. and Mrs. Walter Calhoun of Columbia, S.C. were recent visitors to Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Hester and other relatives here. --- Mrs. C.G. Lovvorn and son Joe of Woodland community took the train here Monday afternoon for Ventura, California. Mrs. Lovvorn has two sons in business there and she expects to spend about three months in California and Texas. Joe will probably locate in the former state. --- STANDING ROCK News June 16th Mr. G.M. Whitten and Miss Annie Young drove over from Five Points Saturday night and were married at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. S.A. Owens. --- NAPOLEON News June 15th Mr. J.M. Hester departed this life last Wednesday morning at 3 o'clock. The deceased was 72 years old and had been an invalid for some time. He leaves six children, two brothers and one sister and a host of friends and other relatives to mourn his death. Interment was at the cemetery of this place. Mr. Mance Hester, brother of the deceased, is reported as being in very critical condition. --- HAYWOOD News June 15th Mrs. Fannie Shaw wasn't able to attend the funeral of her brother Mr. Bud Hester on account of her illness. --- LOCAL News Mrs. S.E. Pope of Texas, Georgia, aged 85 years, is here on a visit to her daughters Mrs. B.H. Braswell and Mrs. J.E. Baird. --- F.M. Hicks of Newnan visited his brother H.M. Hicks last week. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 24, 1925 LOCAL News Mrs. J.R. Sherman, after an illness of several weeks, passed away last Monday and was buried in the city cemetery on Tuesday. Dr. Hines conducted the services. --- BACON LEVEL News June 22nd Miss Nona Morgan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Morgan, and Mr. Homer Thomas were married Saturday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Crowder. Rev. G.H. Shadix officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas left Sunday on a bridal tour to Bainbridge, Georgia and Palm Beach, Fla. --- Mrs. Sam Stephens and daughter visited Mrs. Stephens' daughter Mrs. J.D. Borders this past week. --- BOONE - COMBS MARRIAGE We learn that Mr. Curtis Boone and Miss Connie Combs were married at the home of the latter at Walnut Hill, Georgia on Tuesday. The marriage of this young couple came as a surprise to their friends in this section, but all will join in extending them good wishes. Immediately after the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Boone left to Tuscaloosa county where Mr. Boone has a position with the State Highway Department. ---- AGED CITIZEN DIES J.A. DeLoach, a good citizen of the High Pine community, died at his home Friday night and as buried Saturday afternoon at Mt. Hickory, funeral services being conducted by Revs. H. Willoughby and C.B. Martin. Mr. DeLoach was nearly 77 years old and was the father of fifteen children, thirteen of whom and his widow survive him. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church, a good neighbor and a quiet, peaceable citizen. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Achsah Edwards of LaGrange made a visit to her sister last week, Mrs. M.D. Boulware. --- Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Moore have as their guests Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wardlaw and son of Columbus, Ga. Mrs. Wardlaw is a sister of Mr. Moore. --- The Leader enjoyed a call last Friday afternoon from Mr. C.D. Camp, an aged citizen of Beat 14. He had not been to Roanoke in about 14 years and was well pleased with what he saw. Mr. Camp stated that he was passing through Roanoke when the late Capt. W.A. Handley was laying the foundations of the large brick hotel and store building which he erected 45 years ago. Capt. Handley, he said, called his attention to the solid foundation he was laying for the building, which was a very large house for a small country town, then without a railroad. --- Mrs. Brooks Duke died at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at her home in West End, Birmingham and was buried in that city Monday afternoon. She was a niece of Mrs. W.H. Cook of Roanoke and was partly reared by her. --- HOPEWELL News June 22nd Mr. and Mrs. Ocie McDaniel from Freeport, Miss., have arrived at the former's parents Mr. and Mrs. John Carter, to stay awhile. --- ROCK SPRINGS News June 21st Mr. and Mrs. Jim Siggars of Chambers county visited their daughter Mrs. J.D. Birdsong on Saturday. --- HAYWOOD News June 22nd On June 11th, the children and grandchildren, friends and neighbors gathered at "Uncle" Jim Shelnutt's and celebrated his 80th birthday. Uncle Jim is very feeble. --- The birthday of Mrs. Nan Shelnutt was celebrated on Satuday, a good crowd being present. A bountiful dinner was served and some good singing occurred in the afternoon. Mrs. Shelnutt is 72 years old and has been almost an invalid for some time. --- MRS. J.D. FINCHER CALLED TO HER ETERNAL REWARD Mrs. Etta Pearl Fincher, beloved woman of Hillside, died at 12:40 a.m., Sunday, June 14th, at the residence on Second avenue, after a prolonged illness. She was 36 years of age and was a daughter of William and Suzie Lewis Wood. Her parents lived in Alabama at the time of her birth. She was married to Mr. J.D. Fincher in West Point, 17 years ago, her wedding annivesary June 10th, occurring just a few days before her death. About four years ago, she, with her husband and children moved to Hillside from Roanoke, and since being here, they have, by their uprightness and integrity, won scores of friends. Mrs. Fincher was a faithful wife and a devoted mother. Loyal and true to her neighbors and friends at all times, she won her way into the hearts of all. She was a true christian and felt a genuine interest in the spiritual welfare of all with whom she became associated in her daily life. Mrs. Fincher united with the Church of the Disciples 16 years ago and she remained loyal to that church. Although she moved her letter from Lebanon, the church near Roanoke, Ala., where she first joined, she always had an abiding love for her old home church and there her funeral service was held at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.B. Martin of Lanett, Ala. Interment was at the cemetery at that place also. Mrs. Fincher is survived by her husband and two little sons, J.D. Jr. and Elmo Ray; also one half-brother, Mr. Clarence Wood of Roanoke, Ala.
