TRAIN NEAR CITY The crew of the early west bound passenger train on the A.B. & A. railroad Friday morning discovered the body of a man lying on the side of the track about two miles west of Roanoke. The train stopped and the crew brought the unfortunate man to the hospital in this city where he was found to be badly mangled. The negro was old and of defective sight and hearing. He stated that his name was Arthur Layton and that he was walking to Newnan, Georgia. He did not say where from. It is thought that he was struck by a night freight train, possibly trying to mount it. He died the following day. The body was prepared and held at the morgue of J.L. Dennis & Co. until arrangments were made for the burial on Tuesday, the county paying the expenses. ---- NEW HOPE News Nov. 30th The death of Mrs. Orin Johnson was a great shock to this community last Friday, also the death of her infant. The funeral service was conducted Sunday at Liberty Grove by Rev. Mr. Wilder. She leaves a husband and two small children besides a host of friends to mourn her death. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Chaffin and was the third child they had lost in thirteen months. --- WADLEY News Mrs. J.J. Crowder and children of Hogansville spent the Thanksgiving holidays with her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Gay. --- RADNEY'S CHAPEL News Mr. and Mrs. Bishop Reeves of Shawmutt spent the weekend with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Morris at High Pine. --- MALONE News Dec. 1st Mr. Billie Camp is very low at this writing. --- Jack Camp has returned home from Florida. --- ROCK MILLS News Nov. 30th Mr. Jim Bailey and Miss Dovie Hall were happily married at Bro. Overton's on Nov. 21st. --- HIGHWAY News Nov. 30th Mr. Wyatt Freeman has moved to his son's place, Mr. Buck Freeman. --- OMAHA News Nov. 30th Mr. Joe Arrington who teaches school at Concord, Georgia spent the weekend with his mother who is very feeble. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Mollie Cottle, an old and respect resident of Five Points, died last Friday. --- Mrs. Roy Lunceford of Hogansville was the guest of her sister Mrs. Paul Walker last week. --- The Leader is informed that F.A. Hill of the Frolona, Georgia area was stricken with paralysis last week. --- MR. COFIELD'S BIRTHDAY Quite an enjoyable occasion was the celebration of the 77th birthday of W.W. Cofield on Sunday. All of the children except one in LaGrange were present besides other relatives. The following were present: Rev. W.P. Cofield and family; W.T. Cofield and family; Mrs. J.T. Whitaker; H.C. Cofield and family; Mrs. S.V. Widner; Mrs. B.B. Cofield and family ; Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Crowder; Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Holderfield and family. ---- MISS THORNTON AND J.T. MANLEY MARRIED NOV. 29th Mr. J.T. Manley, son of Mrs. Docia Manley and Miss Dallas Thornton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larkin Thornton of Roanoke, went to Wedowee last Sunday and called at the home of Rev. T.N. Crumpton, by whom they were united in marriage. Shortly afterward they left for the home of the groom in Gulfport, Miss., where the groom is employed by a construction company. Best wishes to this popular couple. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 9, 1925 TRAVELING MAN KILLED NEAR WADLEY BY TRAIN YESTERDAY This afternoon, Dec. 8th, the passenger train bound for Birmingham ran into the Ford car driven by Mr. T.J. Bell at the crossing near the river bridge about a half mile west of Wadley. Mr. Bell was knocked out of the car. There was not a doctor in town at the time so he was put on a train and rushed toward his home at Ashland but died before he reached Malone. Mr. Bell was a well known traveling salesman. He was on his way from Roanoke to Wadley when the accident happened. He was 65 years of age. The car in which Mr. Bell was traveling was completely demolished. ---- MALONE News Dec. 7th Mr. W.A. Camp died last Wednesday. Funeral and interment took place at Forrester's Chapel on Thursday. --- Mrs. C.A. Jordan is very ill with pneumonia. Her children have been called to her bedside. --- LOCAL News Mr. Webster Hunter, a prominent citizen of Buffalo in Chambers county, died last Thursday. He was a brother of Mr. W.C. This the 7th day of December 1925. E.M. Moore, Judge of Probate ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 16, 1925 PROMINENT ABANDA MAN DIED EARLY MONDAY A.M. At this home in Abanda, Chambers county, Mr. W.W. Cardwell died Monday morning at five o'clock. He had been ill several months. He was 77 years of age and had lived since boyhood in the vicinity where his last days were spent. He was a fine citizen and leaves to his eight children a good name. Two of these, J.T. Cardwell and Mrs. J.H. Moore reside in Texas. The wife and mother passed away three years ago. Mr. John F. Cardwell is a surviving brother. The mortal frame of Mr. Cardwell was laid to rest at Concord Tuesday at 11 a.m., after services in charge of Rev. G.D. Hunt. The Masons had charge of the burial. A large concourse of neighbors, friends and relatives were in attendance, honoring the memory of this good man. ---- OLD COLORED RESIDENT MARRIED 50 YEARS AGO Saturday afternoon, Reed Seymour, a long, angular specimen of the colored race, with a long record of good living behind him, the last 35 years spent in Roanoke, was down town "all dressed up." The occasion was the recurrence of his wedding day, which was celebrated just fifty years before. At that time Seymour told his friends that he would dress up in his best when he had been married fifty years. He lived to make good his promise. His wife, Jane Seymour, also is living. They have reared ten children and they are making good in life, as we are informed. Reed is something of a philosopher. He declares that anybody, white or colored, is up against a problem to bring up children under present day conditions. ---- HOPEWELL News Dec. 14th Mr. and Mrs. John Nix and children have returned to Cullman county after spending a few days with Mrs. Nix's father, Mr. Lee Harmon who is real low. --- The writer received a letter from Oklahoma stating that Mr. Andrew Pike of Oklahoma and Mr. Billie Pike of Arkansas will spend Christmas with their kinfolks in Randolph county. --- LOCAL News Robert A. Parker, prominent citizen of New Hope community, left with his family Friday to make their home in Jacksonville, Florida. --- Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Hodges left on the ten o'clock train last night for Greenville, S.C. having received a telegram announcing the death of Mrs. Hodges' only brother Mr. J.G. Aiken which occurred at Connelly Springs, N.C. ---- A.E. Barnes and children arrived last Thursday from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., to visit relatives in Randolph county. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 23, 1925 MRS. C.A. JORDAN DIED AT MALONE LAST THURSDAY Mrs. C.A. Jordan died here last Thursday. Funeral and interment took place at Wesobulga on Friday. She will be greatly missed by her relatives and many friends. We give our sympathy to the entire family, especially her husband Dr. C.A. Jordan. She was the mother of C.W. Jordan of Roanoke. ---- PROMINENT COUPLE MARRIED ON SATURDAY Last Saturday evening at the residence of Mr. E.O. Kitchens Jr. in this city, his father, Mr. E.O. Kitchens Sr. was married to Mrs. Mittie Bartlett. Rev. J.M. Yates was the officiating minister. Mr. and Mrs. Kitchens went to their home in Heard County, Georgia. Both the bride and groom are well known in this county and in Heard County, Ga. The many friends of these good people unite in congratulations and good wishes. ---- FORRESTER'S CHAPEL News Dec. 21st Last Thursday, Mrs. Kate Farrar and Mr. Allen Hay were married. Sudduth were called last week to Sylacauga by the serious illness of their daughter Mrs. M.E. Bates. --- Mrs. W.A. Yeargan has with him for Christmas in the home of his daughter Mrs. J.U. Gilliland, the following children: W.W. Yeargan of Atlanta; Rev. Maurice Yeargan of Davidson, N.C.; and Miss Vivian Yeargan of Troy, Missouri. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 30, 1925 DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. LESUEUR DEAD Margaret, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. G.M. LeSueur, died yesterday at the age of eight years, following a two days illness of diptheria and diabetes. Funeral services were held from the home at two this afternoon and interment made in the city cemetery. Many friends sympathize with the bereaved family in this sad loss. ---- ROBT. O. COFIELD DIED SUNDAY Mr. Robert O. Cofield, a well known and respected citizen of the Lowell section of Randolph county, died Sunday morning. Interment was made in the cemetery of this city Monday morning, following services conducted by Rev. H.F. Keeble. The deceased was reared in the northern part of this county and was a brother of Mr. G.N. Cofield, former sheriff. He is survived by a wife and five grown children. ---- UNION HILL News Dec. 28th Mr. Reid Dobson of Broughton and Miss Audrey Duke of near Rock Stand drove down to Rev. Brownings on Saturday Dec 26th and were happily married. --- HOPEWELL News Dec. 28th Messrs. Billie Pike from Arkansas, Andrew Pike from Oklahoma, Rube and Homer Pike from Cullman county are all in old Randolph county enjoying themselves with their home folks and old friends they used to romp with all over these old hills. Mr. Bob Pike from Marion county and Mr. Frank Pike from Etowah county have not arrived yet. ---- ROCK MILLS News Dec. 28th Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Glass and family and Miss Hattie Glass visited relatives in north Alabama last week. They were accompanied home by the former's brothers, Messrs. Leon Glass and Simpson Glass of the U.S. Navy. --- Mr. Clarence Smith who olived in our town for several years but is now residing in LaGrange, was married Dec. 24th to Miss Cleo White, also of that place. ---- BACON LEVEL News Dec. 28th Miss Bernie Ussery and Mr. Ernest Key were married Thursday of last week. --- Mr. Clyde Irvin and Miss Fern Strickland were on Sunday at the Methodist parsonage. -- Mr. Herber Cullins and Miss Texie Strickland were married on Sunday at the Methodist parsonage in Standing Rock. ---- LOCAL News W.B. Pittman of Neosho, Missouri has come to spend two weeks with his mother Mrs. Emily Pittman and other relatives here. --- The Leader is informed that Mr. Howard Harry and Miss Gladys Whitaker of LaGrange were happily married Sunday, Dec. 20th. ---- Mrs. Bessie Cofield was called some days ago to Macon, Georgia to attend her sister Mrs. J.E. McLain who was ill with pneumonia. The latter was sufficiently recovered to be brought on Christmas day to the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Ozley in West Point. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Barker and son Frank are visiting her brother D.F. Sherard in Montgomery this week. --- Misses Louis and Lola Beck of Talladega are spending the holidays with their sister Mrs. W.L. Meredith. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Blanton of Society Hill visited the latter's sisters Mrs. J.E. Barker and Mrs. S.M.
