Thornton, a well known citizen and local blacksmith, died at his home in north Jasper today. He had been ill with an abcess on the liver, it is said, and pneumonia developed which was the immediate cause of his death. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon and interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Claude Miller and Charles C. Thornton Jr. Mr. Thornton was a good citizen and a member of the First Methodist church. The Jasper Eagle, Dec. 30th The deceased was reared in Randolph County and many former friends will regret to learn of his death. His brothers Messrs. W.L. Thornton and F.M. Thornton and a sister Mrs. Lena Murphy, went from this county to Jasper to attend the funeral. ----- LOCAL News Mr. Thos. F. Ussery was taken very ill Monday night at his home near High Shoals. He is very low this morning. --- HOSPITAL News Sunday night, Max McMurray was severely injured by being caught under an automobile that slipped into a ditch and turned over, returning from the A. B. & A. depot. He was taken at once to the hospital nearby and is resting this morning as well as could be expected. Other patients are Mrs. L. Rice of Delta and Mrs. O.B. Littlefield of Lowell who underwent a second operation. Another patient is Charlie Leonard, a negro boy of Five Points who was shot through the hand by another negro who claimed it was accidental. Two fingers were lost. ---- DEATH OF OSCAR D. SLAY OCCURRED ON THURSDAY News came last Thursday that Mr. Oscar D. Slay had died in a hospital in Tuscaloosa where he had been for several weeks for treatment following a long period of declining health. Messrs. W.H. Hill and T.L. Head went to Tuscaloosa to accompany the remains to Roanoke, arriving Saturday afternoon. Sunday afternoon at two o'clock the funeral was held at the late home of the deceased. Dr. Hines made very appropriate remarks and a quartette rendered several choice selections. A large company of friends gathered to pay their respects, despite the continued rains. Interment followed in the city cemetery. Mr. Slay had long been a well known and prosperous citizen of Roanoke. He was a member of the Baptist church. He is survived by his wife and a number of relatives. ---- WEHADKEE News Jan. 4th Mrs. Morton Arrington of LaGrange is seriously ill at the home of her father, Mr. J.J. Burson in this community. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Willie C. Davis came Friday from Waco, Texas to visit Mrs. J.P. Seroyer and other relatives in this section. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Fowler and children and Mrs. Ida Scott visited relatives in Roanoke this week. The Bowdon Bulletin --- W.Y. Roberts had as his guest last week his brother E.M. Roberts of Texas whom he had not seen in 42 years. He said only one face looked familiar to him and that was the one worn by Ed Mickle. ---- A funeral procession passed through Roanoke on Monday at noon, the family and friends conveying the remains of Mr. W.C. (Bud) Key, who died in LaGrange. He formerly lived in the Lamar beat in Randolph county. The interment was at Providence with Rev. J.D. O'Keefe conducting the services. --- FORMER SLAVE LIVING IN WALKER COUNTY WALKS TEN MILES Jasper, Alabama, Dec. 23rd Trump Edins, a former slave who lives at Oakman in Walker county, attended court here Tuesday. Trump, who is a small sized negro man with snow white hair, says he was born in Halifax county, Virginia on Dec. 25, 1822. "If I live 'til Christmas Day", said Trump, "I'll be 103 years old". The old man says he walked from Oakman to McCollum mines last Sunday, a distance of about ten miles and he thinks he can do 20 miles a day. Trump says he was owned by Gen. Wilder in Virginia who sold him to a man named Jack Glover. Glover brought him to Alabama and sold him to a man named Miller. The old man said he sold for $900. when he was eleven years old; after that he said, he did not know how much he brought. "But I'll bet the men that sold me warn't swapping dollars" the old man commented. The Age- Herald. ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 13, 1926 DEATH OF AN AGED LADY IN ROANOKE ON SATURDAY At five o'clock last Saturday evening occurred the death of Mrs. Rachel Virginia Hale, at the residence of Mrs. J.P. Liles. Mrs. Rachel Virginia Hale had nearly reached the end of her 79th year. She came here early in Dec. to spend a while with her daughter Mrs. J.A. Croley whose husband Judge Croley is engaged in construction work on the highway between Roanoke and Wedowee. The family has rooms in the Liles residence. Friday evening, Mrs. Hale who was apparently in excellent health, suffered a severe attack of the heart but seemed to rally soon afterward. Every effort was made by physicians, family and friends for her comfort and restoration, but the final call came less than 24 hours after being stricken. The remains were taken to the former home of the deceased to Cherokee county for interment, accompanied by the bereaved family. The part left over the A.B. & A. railway early Sunday morning. Roanoke friends extended services as they could to relieve the stricken ones. ----- NEW HOPE News Jan. 11th Mrs. V.O. Huey returned to her home in Macon, Ga., after spending two weeks with her parents Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Strain. --- Mr. Lum Huey came home Saturday after spending two weeks in Macon, Ga. --- ROCK MILLS News Jan. 11th Mrs. Wilford Howard and children of Palm Beach are spending a few weeks with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ed Laws. --- AUSLIN CHAPEL News Jan. 11th Mr. Snive Melton and Miss Belle McLeroy were happily married near here on Sunday at 1 o'clock. The bride lives near Midway and the groom lives in this community. --- HIGHWAY News Jan. 11th In the midst of new year's fond anticipations of the pleasures hopef for, comes the sad news of Mr. Burt Fincher's baby's death, also the death of Mr. and Mrs. Will Holloway's twins. The latter died last Wednesday morning and were buried at Potash on Jan. 7th. Rev. M.U. Rollins preached the funeral at the home of Mrs. Ann Wood, grandmother of the deceased. All the bereft have the sympathy of the entire community. ---- WEHADKEE News Jan. 11th Mrs. Wyatt Freeman died last Friday at her home near Omaha, after a long illness. The deceased was about 65 years of age. She leaves a husband and several grown children. Interment was made at the Freeman burying ground Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.J. Layton. ---- Sorry to report that Mr. Thos. F. Ussery is very low and is not expected to live many days. --- Several days ago Mr. W.A. Gladney had the misfortune while putting on some roofing to get a piece of the glazing in his eye. The eye became so badly infected that the ball had to be removed. He is suffering very much. ---- CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our gratitude to friends who so kindly manifested their sympathy and helpfulness at the time of the sickness and death of our wife and sister. Charles Mitchum, B.J. Mitchum ---- DEATH OF AN AGED LADY On January 3rd occurred the death of Mrs. Charles Mitchum who lived in west Roanoke. She was about 80 years of age and was a sister-in-law of Mr. B.J. Mitchum. Her husband survives her. Interment was in the Roanoke cemetery. ---- LOCAL News Miss Nellie Tolleson of Anniston is the guest of her sister Mrs. J.K. Hall in West End. --- Willis McGuire, a well known and worthy colored citizen of Rock Mills sends The Leader a lengthy card in which he expresses his appreciation for the many kind remembrances given him and his wife on Christmas, especially by his white friends. He advises his race to live on friendly terms with the white people. He and his wife have lived 49 years in Rock Mills and have the respect of both races. ---- Among those who have gone to Florida to try their fortunes is T.E. Wiley. --- Tom Ussery was called this morning to the bedside of his father Mr. T.F. Ussery near Springfield, whose death at any time would be no surprise. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 20, 1926 LOCAL News E.V. Gamble and family were called to Headland last Saturday by the sudden death of Mrs. Gamble's brother, Mr. Dock Baker, a prominent citizen of that town. He was undergoing an operation at Dothan when he suddenly died. Mr. Gamble and family are expected home today. ---- J.B. Tomlin and his sister Mrs. J.J. Green and his niece Mrs. C.G. Bramblett were called last Wednesday to Clay county by the illness of the former's brother Mr. Martin Allen Tomlin who died Wednesday afternoon at his home near Ashland. The deceased was nearly 72 years of age. Funeral and interment was at Liberty Baptist church to which the deceased belonged. ---- WADLEY News Jan. 18th Early this morning the news of the death of Mr. J.C. Wilkins reached Wadley. Mr. Wilkins lived about two miles south of town near the old Wilkins Ferry. He was old settler there. Mr. Wilkins lived to be about 78 years of age. He served in the Confederate Army. Mr. Wilkins married about fifty years ago. His wife is still living. Twelve children were born into the family; four of them are dead. The children living are J.T. Wilkins, H.G. Wilkins, Mrs. J.J. Carter, Mrs. C.A. Weldon, Mrs. R.B. Cotney, Mrs. Bob Stephens, Mrs. W.O. McGill, Mrs. C.J. Pouncey. The funeral will be held here tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. E.M. Carter will have charge of the service. Burial to be in the local cemetery. ---- STANDING ROCK News Jan. 18th Mr. S. Rutland and family were called to Lanett last Monday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Blake Rutland. --- RADNEY'S CHAPEL News Jan. 18th Mrs. Sallie Johnson has taken a little boy 12 years old from the Orphan's Home. --- Mrs. C.O. Garrett who died Sunday was buried at High Pine today. She had been in declining health for some time and her death was not unexpected. The family has the sympathy of the entire community. --- Mr. and Mrs. Claude Dunlap have moved down on Mr. Gilbert's place near Dickert. --- ROCK MILLS News Jan. 18th The death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Towler on Friday evening at 5:45 and carried away the father and husband. Mr. Towler had been sick for several weeks. He endured his suffering without any complaint. He was 49 years old and leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death. But his loss to this world is a better gain above. --- UNION HILL News Jan. 18th Squire Freeman, a well known negro of this community, died last week after several weeks sickness. --- HAYWOOD News Jan. 18th Mr. Hillard Yarbrough and Miss Eunice Moon were married a few days ago. --- Mr. Jim Melton and Miss Beulah Hallmark were married last Thursday night. --- Mrs. Mattie Hill is ill and not doing so well this week. --- ALMOND News Jan. 18th Grandmother Hearn, after several weeks stay with Mrs. Will Stewart, went to Wadley on Thursday to visit her children Mr. Will Hearn and Mrs. Andrew Clardy. --- Mr. A.M. Stone of LaGrange spent two days here last week with his daughter Mrs. Olin Stewart and sister Mrs. Bess Camp. --- FORRESTER'S CHAPEL News Jan. 19th Last Sunday at 2 p.m., Mr. J.S. Vaughn and Miss Lizzie Parrish were married at the home of the bride's mother. J. Wyatt Heflin Esq., performed the ceremony. Mr. Vaughn is a prosperous young farmer of the Level Road community and the bride is the esteemed daughter of the late Elder and Mrs. W.J. Parrish. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank our friends and neighbors who were so kind and thoughtful during the illness and death of our dear mother and especially the doctors who were so kind and faithful. May God's blessings rest and abide with each of you. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. A. Croley and family ---- PRETTY ROMANCE CULMINATES IN A MARRIAGE Joseph A. Rucker of the U.S. Navy and Miss Gladys Tennant of Roanoke were married Friday, January 8th at noon at the Baptist pastorium. The ceremony was performed by the groom's father, Rev. J.W. Rucker, pastor of the First Baptist church. The bride was reared in Roanoke where she received her early education and graduated from the city schools, later going to Cox College, Georgia from which place she finished her college work. Mr. Rucker was a volunteer on the Azeec when the ship made the trip across the rebellion to the enemy and was sunk by a German submarine at LaHayre, France. He is stationed at Norfolk, Virginia on the U.S.S. Rebel as First Gunner, field optician and postmaster of the eastern division of the U.S. Navy. The two were in school together in Roanoke 12 years ago. Thus began the romance that after three trips around the world brought him back to Roanoke for his bride. They went immediately to Norfolk where they will be at home Jan. 15th. The LaFayette Sun ---- LOCAL News Mrs. T.R. Burgess left yesterday for Waycross, Georgia where she will get acquainted with her grandson, born las Wednesday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Todd. --- Walter G. Pearson of Anniston was here Monday as the guest of his uncle, J.D. Myhand. --- F.M. Vann is ill with pneumonia but is doing as well as could be expected. Two nurses, Mrs. Simonton and Miss Ruby Smith are attending him. --- The Leader learns that Mrs. Lula Weathers Wright was happily marired January 3rd in Frederick, Oklahoma to Mr. Wilbur M. Tomlinson. The bride has many friends and relatives in this, her old home. ---- John L. Dennis is in Ashland, having been called there to embalm the body of Mrs. Arthur Owens who died yesterday afternoon. The deceased is related to the Hooton family in this place. --- The Leader has received a newspaper subscription to the Leader from James E. Yates who is now connected with a photographer's studio in St. Augustine, Florida. He was reared in Lamar, this county. ---- Dr. W.P. Hines of Roanoke, former pastor of the First Baptist church of this city, came down this morning to officiate at the funeral of the late Mrs. R.L. Summers who died on Monday. He leaves a widow and several children. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 27, 1926 AGED MEN DIED RECENTLY (Note: the left side of this front page was not scanned well so difficult to transcribe) Thomas F. Ussery died last ?? at the home of his daughter Mrs. R.T. Young of Springfield. He was in his ??-third year and had been at the point of death for a week or more. He was a brother of Mr. ?? Ussery and a father of Mr. ?? C. Ussery, both of Roanoke. After funeral services conducted by Dr. Hines and attended by a large company of friends and relatives, the remains were brought to Roanoke and interred by the side of the wife who died many years ago. Mr. Ussery spent practically all of his life in this county. He was a resident of Bacon Level beat and lived many years at High Shoals. He was a soldier in the Confederat Army and for many years was adjutant of the local Confederate veterans camp. In early life he became a member of the Baptist church. -- On ?? night at his home in Franklin, Georgia, Mr. R.B. Mooty died following a period of ill health extending over two ???. He was 75 years of age. Interment will be in Franklin tomorrow. He used to be a familiar figure in Roanoke in his more ?? days. He was the father of ?? Mooty of this city. Other children are R.O. Mooty of Birmingham, ? U. Mooty of Texas; L.W. ?? of Ohio, Mrs. J.S. Thompson of Akron, Ohio is a ?? of the deceased. All of the children will be present at the funeral except the son in Texas. Mr. Mooty was long a leading figure of Heard county and was a member of the Methodist church. He was the last surviving member of a prominent family of six sons and two daughters. ----- CAR WRECK IN FLORIDA KILLS A FORMER RANDOLPH COUNTY MAN The remains of Hosea Mashburn arrived in Roanoke at noon Monday from Haines City, Florida where he was killed Saturday night in an automobile wreck. The report is that the car in which he was riding was struck by another car and knocked over into a lake. Mr. Mashburn was unable to free himself and death by drowning resulted. The remains were carried to Midway church, south of Wedowee, the vicinity where the unfortunate young man was reared, and were there interred Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was about 22 years of age and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mashburn and a nephew of Mrs. W.T. Orr of Roanoke. His tragic and untimely death will be widely lamented. ---- LOCAL News Wayne and Oscie Mashburn arrived Tuesday from Akron, Ohio to attend the funeral of their brother Hosea which occurred at Midway yesterday afternoon. --- WEHADKEE News Jan. 22nd Mrs. J.P. Lewis of Atlanta is spending a few days with her mother Mrs. J.R. Green who is in feeble health. --- OFELIA News Jan. 25th One of the most interesting events of the season was the marriage last Monday of Miss Vernie Yates and Mr. Gerald Robinson. She is the attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Yates of Pleasant Grove community. Mr. Robinson is the son of Rev. and Mrs. Robinson. THey are now at the home of the groom's parents in this community. ---- "Aunt" Sallie McCarter was called to Standing Rock last Thursday to the bedside of her sister Mrs. M.A. Moon who is seriously ill. --- MOUNT CARMEL News Jan. 25th Mr. Tom Clark was taken ill at the saw mill the other day and was carried home at once in bad condition. --- NAPOLEON News Jan. 25th Mrs. Sidney Bailey was buried at Little Mount Carmel on Sunday afternoon. --- HAYWOOD News Jan. 25th Mrs. Ruth Willingham and children spent the weekend with her sister Mrs. W.T. Overton at Rock Mills. --- Mr. Robert Rollins and Miss Nettie Nelson were married last Sunday. --- STANDING ROCK News Jan. 25th Mrs. Ed Davis and daughter of LaGrange spent the weekend here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dewberry. --- Mr. Bailey, known here as "Uncle Sug", died today after a brief illness at his home at Bailey near here. Russell and sister Miss Edith were called last Friday to Eva in Morgan county by the serious illness of their father Mr. T.H. Russell. --- Miss Jessie Freeman who has been ill the past two weeks was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon for a serious operation. This morning her condition is reported to be as favorable as could be expected.
