Hill who was 79 years of age recently spent the day with his daughter Mrs. Williams who had a birthday dinner for him. In the afternoon he expressed a wish to walk to town, a distance of about half a mile. Later that afternoon he was found where he had fallen on the roadside, and he has been critically ill since. ---- TWO DEATHS IN LOWELL RECENTLY; MR. J.H. HOOD AND MRS. ALICE WOOD GONE TO THEIR REWARD The death of Mrs. Alice Wood, well known and respected citizen of Lowell, which occurred last Saturday morning at 3:30, was followed at 7o'clock Monday evening by the death of another prominent resident of that section of Roanoke, Mr. J.H. Hood. Mrs. Wood had been in ill health for eight months, and her demise was no surprise to her relatives and friends. Her husband the late W.V. Wood, preceded her by several years. The deceased is survived by her son Clarence Wood. Mrs. M.L. Crenshaw is a sister and was present when the end came. Funeral and interment was at Lebanon on Sunday morning where Mrs. Wood held her membership. Rev. A.P. Hodges conducted the funeral rites. In the case of Mr. J.H. Hood, death resulted after a long period of ill health. He had reached the age of 81 years. In his death the county loses on of its best citizens and the Confederate veterans a worthy comrade. He was a loyal member of the Baptist church during the greater part of his long and useful life. His body will be laid to rest at Big Springs church where he formerly lived and held his membership. Mr. Hood was a man of unusual mental poise and strong character. He was an ardent champion of good morals, never hesitating to express himself when a public issue was up for settlement. The death of such a man is a distinct loss to his country. Mr. Hood is mourned by his wife and three sons, R.M., W.J. and R.K. Hood, and many relatives and a host of friends. ---- NEW HOME News Feb. 1st Mr. and Mrs. Horace Boyd have returned to their home in Abilene, Texas after a few weeks stay in Alabama. --- Everbody enjoyed the quilting at Luther Boyd's on Saturday and especially the sugar boiling at night. --- STANDING ROCK News Feb. 1st Mrs. Perry Moon died Tuesday following an illness of several months duration. She leaves a husband and three daughters to mourn her passing away. The interment was made in the cemetery here. --- The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Pres Farrar is critically ill. Little hopes are held for the child's recovery. --- LEVEL ROAD News Feb. 1st Boss Heflin, colored, has lost his mind. He is reported to be 96 years old. He belonged to Judge Heflin's father in slavery times. ---- WOODLAND News Feb. 1st Rev. Joe Camp of Villa Rica, Georgia is spending a few days with his daughter Mrs. J.B. Whitten. --- Mrs. Iva Butler and Mrs. Lola Beck will leave in a few days to join their husbands in Akron, Ohio where they have positions. --- Mrs. Ella Capehart visited her daughter Mrs. Bertha Wright in Wedowee on Saturday. --- NAPOLEON News Feb. 1st Mr. John Taylor had the misfortune to get his left arm sawed off while working at a saw mill last week. --- HOPEWELL News Feb. 1st Miss Alta Thrasher of near Milner has been spending a few days with her sister here, Mrs. Dan Cummings. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins Hornsby arrived Monday from Texas to visit home folks here. --- Roy K. Hood arrived in Roanoke last night from Hartford, being called here by the death of his father Mr. J.H. Hood. --- A son was born a few days ago to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Thompson at the home of the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. U. Beach of this city. --- Mrs. P.G. Trent Sr. and her daughter Miss Helen left Roanoke Sunday night for Jacksonville, Florida where they will make their home. The latter has a position as file clerk in the Western Union office there. --- Mrs. Max Langley and child are preparing to leave this week to join Mr. Langley at Greenville, Ala where he has a good position. --- ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE State of Alabama Randolph County Probate Court In the matter of the estate of Joseph R. Hood, deceased This day came Mrs. H.R. Patrick, administratrix of the estate of said deceased and filed her accounts, vouchers, written evidence and statements under oath for final settlement of said administration. Whereupon it is ordered that the 8th day of March 1926 be appointed a day on which to make such settlement at which time all persons interested can appear and contest the said settlement if they think proper. Wilkinson of Atlanta had his leg cut off and he left Saturday afternoon to go see him. --- Mr. Roy Gosdin is ill with pneumonia. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 10, 1926 HOSPITAL News A.D. Pope of Roanoke had one toe taken off as a result of a gunshot wound. --- Robert Ozley who had his left arm torn off some days ago while working at a saw mill near Abanda was able to return to his home this week. --- JOHN M. HODGE DIED FEB. 8th Wadley lost one her best citizens yesterday at 11:10 a.m. when Mr. John M. Hodge died, after two years of declining health. The funeral was held at the Baptist church this afternoon at 2 o'clock, this house being used in order to accommodate the large crowd of friends who attended. Rev. O.C. Morton, his pastor, conducted the services. Revs. J.P. West, C.W. Carter, S.L. Beougher, E.M. Carter, and Messrs. R.W. Thompson and J.M. Gay paid tributes to his life. Mr. Hodge was laid to rest in the local cemetery with the Masons officiating. Mr. Hodge moved to Wadley when the town had its beginning and helped to organize the Bank of Wadley and was one of the directors at his death. He was cashier of the bank for 16 years. Mr. Hodge was born July 29, 1860 at Almond where he lived until moving here. In Feb. 1882 he married Miss Martha Tidwell. To them were born six children; one boy died in infancy. Those living are Dr. E.K. Hodge, Mrs. R.E. Lee, Mrs. R.W.C. Hunter, Mrs. J.W. Motley, and Mrs. L.B. Hodlett. Mr. Hodge joined the M.E. church in early manhood and was a loyal member and supporter through his life. It was through his liberality that Bethlehem College was located here. He gave 45 acres of land on which the college is located. In respect to Mr. Hodge, there was no school at the college today and the public school dismissed at noon. ------ FORMER RANDOLPH COUNTY MAN DIED IN BOWDON ON MONDAY Bowdon, Georgia, Feb. 8th J.L. Lovvorn, president of the Bowdon Railroad Company and the Bowdon Oil & Fertilizer Company, died Monday morning at 7 o'clock at his home here. He was 64 years old. Mr. Lovvorn leaves a wife and three children, five brothers and two sisters. He was a Shriner and a member of the Missionary Baptist church of this city. His brothers are H.A. Lovvorn of Columbus, Ga.; J.T. Lovvorn of Carrollton, Ga.; J.E. Lovvorn of Bowdon, Ga., C.L. Lovvorn of Bowdon, Ga., and Dr. L.M. Lovvorn of Bowdon, Ga. His sisters are Mrs. S.H. Yates and Miss Emma Lovvorn of Bowdon, Ga. The funeral will be held about noon on Tuesday from the Missionary Baptist church here with burial in the city cemetery. The Atlanta Georgian. The deceased was born and reared in the northern part of Randolph county where he has many relatives and friends. ----- LOCAL News Mrs. Frank Hornsby was called Tuesday to Selma to attend her brother Mr. Cook Hearn who is critically ill with pneumonia. ---- Mr. F.P. Mullendore is quite feeble at the home of his son O.L. Mullendore. --- RADNEY'S CHAPEL News Feb. 8th Sorry to say that Mrs. R.T. Hodges had the misfortune to fall last Thursday night and break her right hip. She is in a very serious condition. --- MALONE News Feb. 8th Mr. Andrew Wilkinson is spending a few days in Atlanta with his brother D. Wilkinson who had the misfortune of getting his leg cut off a few days ago while working on a railroad. --- WEHADKEE News Feb. 8th Mr. Humphrey Hood and Miss Celia Webb were happily married some days ago. --- LOCAL News Mr. James R. Hollinger is enjoying a visit from his brother Mr. David B. Hollinger of St. Joseph, Missouri. The brothers had not been together in 42 years except for one meeting 26 years ago. Mrs. Young was a well known christian woman and she will be very much missed in her home and community. --- BACON LEVEL News Feb. 15th Mr. Mack Talley moved his wife and children to LaGrange on Friday. --- CORINTH (NORTH) News Feb. 15th Mrs. Myrtice Wood, after a few days visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Crews, left for Heflin last Friday to be with her husband. --- CORINTH (SOUTH) News Feb. 15th Mr. J.C. Harris was truck in the back with a limb and was badly hurt. --- Mrs. O. Wright was called to the bedside of her daughter on Saturday, Mrs. C.D. Gray in LaGrange who is ill. --- UNION HILL News Feb. 15th Mrs. Clarence Wood and children of Roanoke are spending this week with her brother John L. Rice. --- WEHADKEE News Feb. 15th Mr. Reed Hood and a Miss Webb of Frolona, Georgia were married a week ago. --- ALMOND News Feb. 15th "Aunt" Emily Wilkinson was stricken with paralysis on Saturday night. --- NEW HOME News Feb. 15th Mr. Clifford Fowler is here from Colorado, Texas. He came to attend the funeral of his brother Dewey Fowler who died in Birmingham. --- Mr. Ramon Waters and Miss Lucile Bailey motored to the home of Mr. H.D. Landers on Sunday where they were happily married. --- FORMER RANDOLPH COUNTY MAN DIED IN OKLAHOMA ON FRIDAY News was received here Saturday of the death Friday night at his home in Texhoma, Oklahoma of Mr. Charles Presnal. The deceased was born and reared in Randolph county, being a member of one of the oldest and best known families. A brother and sister still live at the old home near High Shoals. Mr. Presnal moved to Texas over twenty years ago. Many friends and relatives in his old home county are saddened by his death. ---- LOCAL News Mr. James T. Lane was stricken with paralysis on Sunday at his home two miles southeast of Roanoke. He is doing fairly well this morning. --- Mr. John Evans died suddenly in the prime of life near Truett last Saturday. His body was brought to his former home, Standing Rock, for interment on Sunday. --- Mrs. J.C. Wright and Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Jones were called to Tuskegee Monday evening by the death of Mr. J.J. Patterson, prominent citizen of that place, whose wife was formerly Miss Loraine Wright. The funeral was in Tuskegee on Tuesday. Mr. Patterson frequently visited Roanoke and his friends here regret to learn of his death. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Lee Dowdle left Monday to make their home in Ripley, Mississippi, the latter's former home. --- Gordon Green and Miss Lena Burson, prominent young people of Omaha, were married at the residence of Mr. John Camp on Monday evening. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 24, 1926 NAPOLEON News Feb. 22nd Mrs. D.A. Laney is very ill with heart trouble. --- Mrs. Dock Thurman, who has been an invalid for some time on account of a crippled leg, fell last week and broke her other leg. She is now suffering greatly. --- Mrs. Mabelle Brown of LaGrange is visiting her sister Mrs. Ruth Prince. --- Miss Nannie Mae Nichols was married last Sunday to Mr. Luther Bailey from Flat Rock. --- ROCK MILLS News Feb. 22nd Mrs. J.W. Shepard died suddenly Saturday night. Interment was here Sunday afternoon. --- Mr. John Hand of Atlanta visited his sister Mrs. W.O. Middlebrooks last week. --- MALONE News Feb. 22nd This community was saddened last Thursday night when the death angel called "Uncle" Jimmie Fisher to the great beyond. He had been sick for a year. Mr. Fisher was a faithful member of the Baptist church. He will be greatly missed in Sunday school as well as in the home. Those who knew him best loved him most. He leaves a wife and a host of relatives to mourn his going. The bereaved have the sympathy of the community. ---- WEDOWEE News Feb. 23rd Mr. Judge Whaley who has been ill for several months is very low and little hope is held out for his recovery. --- Asa T. Wright of Killgore, Texas is visiting his cousin, Dr. C.B. Wright. The former was born and reared in Randolph county and moved to Texas several years ago. He is a Confederate veteran. --- WEHADKEE News Feb. 22nd Mr. W.H. Walker and family and Mrs. Sam Walker and children left Saturday for Ritta, Florida to make their future home. --- Mrs. W.M. Arrington passed to her reward last Tuesday after a period of declining health. The deceased was about 65 years of age. Interment was made at Big Springs on Wednesday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Mr. W.T. Kent. Her husband preceded her across the river of death last October. --- WELL KNOWN CITIZEN DIED NEAR TOWN ON MONDAY About midnight on Monday, Mr. Sydney L. Owens died at his home in the Mt. Olive community. He was stricken with paralysis the Friday preceding. Mr. Owens was about 58 years of age and was a well known and respected citizen. He is survived by nine children, nearly all of whom are grown. Funeral and interment will be at Lane's Chapel at 11 today. Rev. G.D. Hunt will be in charge. ---- RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF MRS. BEULAH STEPHENS It is with incomparable grief and sorrow that we record the death of Sister Beulah Stephens, a faithful member of the Order of the Eastern Star; therefore, be it resolved; That we bow in humble submission to the will of our Heavenly Father who doeth all things for the best, and we are comforted because we know she was ready, and death to her was only the passing to a larger, fuller life which our Master has promised to his faithful followers. Resolved, that in our hearts we shall ever retain a place for her memory and faith, ever striving to reach her ideal of christian character. While we mourn our loss we are thankful for the beautiful, consecrated, useful life which has left its impress on all those with whom she associated. Sister Stephens became a member of Emily Chapter No. 40, O.E.S. on April 24, 1920 and remained a faithful member until her death November 4, 1925. Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved husband, that a copy be spread on the minutes of the Eastern Star, also that a copy be sent The Roanoke Leader for publication. J.R. Fisher. --- Mr. and Mrs. Pat Garvey will move tomorrow to Chickamauga, Georgia. Mrs. Garvey is a second cousin of the great Confederate leader, Gen. Robert E. Lee. ---- The old home of the late Mrs. Martha Lane, two miles southeast of town, was destroyed by fire last Wednesday night. It was owned by C.A.
