GAY AND TURNER MAKE BOND OF $2500 At the preliminary trial of Officers Otis Gay and Will Turner before County Court Judge E.M. Moore last Wednesday afternoon, evidence was offered by the state to connect them with the slaying of Milus Hill, a negro who it is said, was shot while fleeing from a still raided by the officers on Nov. 19th. The accused offered no evidence whatsoever. The judge set a bond of $2500 each for their appearance before the next grand jury. The bonds were promptly made. ---- DEATH OF AGED MOTHER OF MRS. J.E. BAIRD Mrs. Joseph E. Baird and family, accompanied by other relatives and a number of friends went to Texas, Georgia last Friday morning to attend the funeral and interment of the venerable mother of Mrs. Baird, Mrs. S.E. Pope, who died after a short illness at 4 a.m. on Thursday at the home of her daughter Mrs. M.C. Baird in that community. The services were conducted by Rev. A.V. Roarck, pastor of the Methodist church at Franklin, Georgia, and were attended by many friends and neighbors of this honored mother. The deceased would have been 87 years of age had she lived to February 1, 1927. At a service during the church union meeting in Roanoke last July, Mrs. Pope was presented with a bouquet as being the oldest person present. ---- MRS. A.W. DOWLING DIED IN BIRMINGHAM NOV. 24th Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Cummings were called to Birmingham early last week by the critical condition of their daughter Mrs. A.W. Dowling, who died Wednesday afternoon. Her husband and two children survive her in the Birmingham home. Mrs. Dowling will be remembered in Roanoke, her former home, as Miss Hattie Ruth Cummings. Many friends regret her untimely end which came after a long period of ill health. She was 24 years old. ---- WEDOWEE News Nov. 30th Mr. and Mrs. George Irons of Marion, Ala., and Miss Inez Wright of Newville, Ala., spent Thanksgiving with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Wright. --- Mr. W.M. Dobson who received severe injuries last Wednesday in a fall from the water wheel at Dobson's Mill, is slowly recovering. --- OFELIA News Nov. 29th Mrs. Lon Hampton died Nov. 19th. She will be missed by her relatives and many friends. She was sick only a few days. Interment was at Christiana. Rev. Mr. Ray conducted the funeral services. The deceased is survived by her husband and six children, four boys and two girls. --- Mrs. Lillian Charan from Atlanta spent the weekend with her mother Mrs. Anna Stewart. --- SMYRNA News Nov. 29th Rev. R.L. Skinner delivered a fine service at Smyrna on Sunday. --- Mr. Tom Merrill of Arbacoochee was buried at Hurricane cemetery on Saturday. Rev. R.L. Skinner conducted the funeral services. The wife and mother died some time past. --- Mr. Grover Elder of New Hope and Miss Pattie Mae Norris of High Pine, drove down to New Hope and got married last Thursday afternoon. Rev. Jesse Dollar performed the ceremony. --- DEATH OF TWO AGED MEN IN THIS PLACE ON MONDAY Monday afternoon, Mr. Thomas Russell died at his home on Roanoke Heights, after an illness of several weeks. He was 72 years of age and leaves a wife and seven children. In this number are Mrs. James Sheets and Miss Edith Russell of Roanoke and Mr. Charles H. Russell of LaGrange. The interment was made at Bacon Level on Tuesday afternoon with services by Dr. Hines. Mr. Russell spent most of his long life in that section. He had been a member of the Baptist church since boyhood. Mr. J.F. Russell of Roanoke is a brother of the deceased. At 8:30 Monday, Mr. James D. Hunter died at the residence of his nephew, Mr. James S. Hunter, this city, after an illness of several days. His wife died at the age of 87 years at their home in Troup County just one month before. Mr. Hunter who was nearly 90 years old, then came here to make his home. The remains were taken this morning back to his old home at Flat Shoals for interment. The deceased was a member of the Primitive Baptist church. ---- NEW HOPE News Nov. 29th Mr. G.B. Payne and Miss Lurline McIntyre were happily married on Sunday. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Pate, the aged widow of the late Mr. Thomas Pate, is very low at the home of her son Mr. Byrd Pate of this city. --- C.A. Russell of Vinemont was called here Tuesday by the death of his father Mr. T.H. Russell. --- J.L. Thomas was called Saturday to Cordova by the death of his father Mr. L.H. Thomas, who was struck by a train while crossing a trestle in that place and knocked into the Warrior River. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 8, 1926 ENLOE - McGEEVER NUPTIALS Before an altar of ferns and white chrysanthemums lighted with candles, Miss Julia Carol McGeever and Harvey Enloe Jr. of Roanoke, Ala., were married Tuesday afternoon at 5:30. The ceremony took place at the home of the bride's mother Mrs. Patrick J. McGeever in Norwood with Monsignor Kerrigan officiating. After the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Enloe left for a wedding trip to New Orleans and Florida. After Dec. 15th, Mr. and Mrs. Enloe will be at home in the Pandora Apartment in Norwood. The Birmingham News, the 1st --- OFELIA News Dec. 6th Mrs. Ped Liles is very low at this writing. --- Mr. and Mrs. George Willingham visited the latter's brother Mr. M.D. Warren on Wednesday. --- LOCAL News Last Sunday, a few friends united in celebrating the 78th birthday of Mr. W.L. Payne at his home a few miles south of town. Presents from grandchildren was a pleasant feature. Nov. 4th is the actual date of Mr. Payne's birth. --- Mrs. F.M. Hornsby was called to Atlanta yesterday by the serious illness of her father Mr. Thomas Hearn. --- Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Cole left Sunday for Clearwater, Florida to spend the winter with their son, Ben Cole and family. --- Horace W. Cunningham was in town this morning and reported the birth of a son in his home six miles south of town the morning of the 7th inst. He will have the name of his gifted and popular grandfather, the late Mr. E.C. Cunningham, and will start off as "Fess" for short. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 15, 1926 (NOTE: The left side of the front page of this newspaper issue was not filmed well with most of the articles difficult to transcribe on that side of the page) DEATH OVERTAKES OLD RANDOLPH COUNTY RESIDENT The family and friends of Mr. L.C. Hendon were shocked at his sudden death early last Saturday at his home at Paran. He had spent his long life of over 71 years in this vicinity and had established a record for uprightness and good citizenship that will be a lasting heritage to his descendants. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church. Mr. Hendon is survived by a number of grown children, among these Mr. Ira G. Hendon, superintendant of education in Randolph county who is one of the county's most progressive citizens. ---- HOMER HUDSON SHOT NEAR WEST POINT DEC. 8th The Leader learns with regret of the death of Homer Hudson, son of M.V. Hudson of the well known Hudson family of Bacon Level. He was shot and dangerously wounded last Wednesday near West Point where he was living. Our information is that he went to the house of Will Harris, colored, looking for ??, and that Harris had recently beaten a white man with a pistol and that is when Hudson remonstrated, and Will Harris shot him. Apparently Harris escaped. Mr. Hudson's recovery is considered very doubtful. ---- DEATH ENDS SUFFERINGS OF ROANOKE YOUNG LADY Miss Erlou Burgess died at the local hospital about seven o'clock last Friday morning. She had been a great sufferer for many months and was for the second time being treated at the sanitorium, but all efforts unavailing in her case, and so death came as a release to her. She was conscious and ready to go. Miss Burgess was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Burgess of this city and in their loss they have the deep sympathy of the community. The daughter was a modest, dutiful young woman and a devoted member of the Baptist church. Services in her memory were held at the church at ten o'clock Saturday morning. The pastor, Dr. Hines, was assisted by the pastor of the Methodist church, Bro. Abernathy. Interment was in the public cemetery of this city. ---- LETTER OF THANKS We wish to express our deep appreciation to our friends for their many manifestations of love and sympathy in our recent bereavement in the loss of our husband and father. I.G. and Grover Hendon attended the funeral of their father Mr. L.C. Hendon, which was held at Paran on Sunday at 11 o'clock. --- BROUGHTON News Dec. 13th Several relatives and friends enjoyed a birthday dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Baldwin yesterday. Holley Baldwin of Double Head is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Baldwin. --- PROVIDENCE News Dec. 13th T.W. Ramsey has recently moved from our community to Sand Mountain. Also, C.E. Yates is planning to move to the same section of the mountain. These people are good citizens and we regret to give them up. --- NEW SITE News Dec. 13th Mr. Iris Boyd and MIss Lovie Mitchell were married Saturday afternoon. --- LOCAL News Troy Fields called Saturday to have the paper sent to him at LaGrange, where he is moving to. --- E.B. Evans of Cincinnati was in town Monday, while visiting home folks at Wadley. --- News reached Mrs. M. Cagle on Dec. 11th of a birth of a son to her daughter Mrs. L.S. Strickland in Minneapolis, Minn. --- Mrs. Wesley N. Jones has come to spend some time with her daughter-in-law Mrs. Edna Jones. --- DEATH OF COLORED MAN, NEARLY 100 YEARS OF AGE We want to thank our friends, both colored and white, for the kindness rendered us during the illness of our father Boss Heflin, colored, who died Nov. 28, 1926. He lived to be nearly one hundred years of age. He belonged to the late Dr. W.L. Heflin in the days of slavery and the Heflin family stood by him until the end. We want to thank the entire Heflin family for the clothing and many other things they gave him in his old age. Judge Heflin came to see him often and every time he came he brought him something that he would be proud of. We want to thank Judge Heflin for the nice suit he gave to bury him in; also for that notable speech he made at our father's funeral. It touched the hearts of everyone that heard it. Wish everybody could have heard it especially the colored race. Wish we had space to mention some of the fine things he said in his speech. A.H. Heflin J.H. Heflin ----- LOCAL News Annie Laurie Bailey, a colored woman, died at the Knight Sanitorium last week. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 22, 1926 MRS. PEAVY DIED NIGHT OF DEC. 20th The death of Mrs. James M. Peavy in Birmingham on Monday night is a shock to many friends and acquaintences of this good lady and of the well known Peavy and Dean families throughout this section of the country. While Mrs. Peavy had been sick about two weeks, her condition was not considered serious and very few knew of her illness. She had an attack of grippe, following by a rising in the head, which finally poisoned her system. Her brother Dr. Leon Dean, arrived in Roanoke Friday night and a consultation with other physicians resulted in a decision to carry the stricken lady to the T.C.I. Hospital in Birmingham with which Dr. Dean is connected. This was done Saturday afternoon. The other members of the family went to Birmingham on Sunday. All efforts failed to arrest the disease. Funeral and interment will be in Birmingham this afternoon. In that city live the mother, the brother and two sisters of the deceased. Others who survive her are her husband and three children, Misses Marvin, Josephine and Mary Sue Peavy of this place. Mrs. Peavy was reared in Wedowee, the daughter of the late Dr. P.E. Dean and Mrs. Josephine Dean. She later lived in Wadley after her marriage, coming to Roanoke about sixteen years ago. She was a woman of unusual business and domestic ability, always looking well after her home, but found time to engage in social and religious activities. She was an interested and faithful member of the Methodist church and of those important auxiliaries, the Sunday school and the Women's Missionary Society. She will be greatly missed and sincerely mourned in her untimely death. --- WEDOWEE News Dec. 21st Many friends and relatives of Mrs. Jim Peavy are grieved to learn of her death in Birmingham on Monday night. Mrs. Peavy, who was formerly Miss Nelia Dean, spent most of her life before her marriage in and near Wedowee. ---- HOMER HUDSON DEAD AS A RESULT OF PISTOL SHOT Last Wednesday, The Leader reported the unfortunate case of Mr. Homer Hudson, son of Mr. M.V. Hudson, who was shot a week prior by a pistol in the hands of a desperate negro, Will Harris, near West Point,when the former remonstrated with the negro for his unsulting manner. Tuesday night of last week death came as a result of the wound received through the body. Funeral and interment followed Wednesday afternoon at Bacon Level, the old home of the deceased, with Rev. S.A. Owen of Standing Rock in charge. Much sympathy is felt for the distressed family. ---- BOY DIED OF DIPTHERIA IN LOWELL ON SATURDAY Last Saturday, Emmett Williamson, the seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Williamson, died at their home in Lowell as a result of diptheria. A hard fight was made to save the life of this bright little fellow but his system failed to respond to the treatment. He was the only child of the home and his loss is a grevious disappointment to the fond parents, whose friends sympathize with them deeply. Interment was at Concord on Sunday afternoon after services conducted by Rev. W.T. Overton. ---- ROCK STAND News Dec. 20th Sunday afternoon, Mr. Thomas P. Liles and Miss Ada Childers were married in Penton. --- RADNEY'S CHAPEL News Mrs. Graves Elder of Lowell is spending this week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Norris at High Pine. --- LOCAL News C.L. Hudson was in town on Monday and reported that his sons William and Davis could be home this week from Bartow, Florida to spend Christmas. ---- Thomas Linwood Crowder and wife arrived Saturday from Olar, S.C. to remain until Jan. 2nd with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Parker Crowder. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 29, 1926 CITATION TO HEIRS State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court In the matter of the estate of J.P. Leek and two children of west Texas are on a visit to relatives in Roanoke and vicinity. --- Long time residents of Roanoke will be interested in learning of the death of Mrs. E.H. Cobb who died at her home in Villa Rica, Georgia on Dec. 20th. As Miss Lula Haralson she taught school in Roanoke many years ago. --- The Leader enjoyed a call from Mrs. Clara Weathers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.E.J. Taylor, who has spent the past year with relatives at Terrell, Texas where she expects to return after Christmas. She was accompanied here by her kinsmen, Messrs. S.C.Cliett, H.C. Anderson and S.C. Doss of Terrell, Texas. They will spent two or three weeks in this county. ---- L.R. Dyche, while on a visit here with his family at Christmas, was called Sunday to Oklahoma City by the death of his father. ---- Mrs. R.B. Mooty of Franklin, Georgia is here to enjoy the reunion of the family of her son, A.A. Mooty, all of the children but one being present.
