HINES The sudden death of Mr. J.H. Hines which occurred at Standing Rock about 9:30 Tuesday morning, will be learned with regret by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. For a half century or more he had been a leading citizen in that community and section and had almost attained the age of four- score years. For some time he had been in feeble health. Mr. Hines was engaged in farming, merchandising and banking and had made quite a success financially. He was also active in public affairs and was many years an official in the Methodist church. He is survived by his second wife and a number of children by his first wife. Among these are Mr. C.E. Hines of Standing Rock and Senator James A. Hines of LaFayette. Funeral services will be held at Standing Rock church at 2:30 this afternoon. Quite a number of Roanoke friends will be in attendance. ---- V.T. HESTER BADLY WOUNDED AND IS IN LOCAL HOSPITAL V.T. Hester of Wehadkee community was brought to the Knight Sanitorium this morning with an ugly cut on his face, said to have been inflicted by his brother W.L. Hester. It is a very deep and painful wound but it is thought that the young man will recover. ---- STANDING ROCK News Jan. 31st Mrs. Annie Britton left Wednesday for Columbus to visit her sister Mrs. Lallage Higgins who is very low. --- WEHADKEE News Jan. 31st Sorry to report that Mr. F.A. Hill, our rural mail carrier, is seriously ill at his home at Frolona, Georgia. --- Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hamm from Florida are visiting the former's parents Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Shelnutt at Springfield. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Mary Holley of Jersey City, N.J. has come to spend a week or more with her daughter Mrs. Glover Trent. --- The Leader had a visit on Monday from H. Lee Guinn, who was a well known citizen of this county many years ago. He is now located in New Orleans. --- Mr. Walter Roberts received the sad news Tuesday afternoon of the death of his son Sam, a young married man, who lost his life by a truck overturning on him near Lanett yesterday. --- Mrs. J.A. Carlisle received the sad news last Saturday of the sudden death of Mr. Albert Sturgis of Warrenton, Georgia. His wife will be remembered here as Miss Mollie Moran who has visited her aunt Mrs. Carlisle many times. She is left with two small children. --- Mr. J.L. Beverly brought to the Leader office a few days ago an order for a newspaper subscription from Mr. Ellis E. Ford of Texas. Mr. Ford is a brother of the late Mr. B.J. Ford and the late Mr. R.H. Ford and went to Texas from Randolph county about fifty years ago. He has succeeded in business and has been at the same place all the while, never having returned on a visit. He is the last surviving member of his family, is unmarried and is 74 years of age. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 9, 1927 FUNERAL OF MR. HINES WAS ATTENDED BY MANY The funeral of Mr. J.H. Hines at Standing Rock last Wednesday afternoon was attended by a large concourse of his own home people and by many representative citizens from surrounding communities. Mr. Hines had been a strong figure in the development of the Standing Rock section where he was born and spent his entire life of more than 79 years. Many floral offerings also attested to the appreciation of those who knew him best. Five ministers had part in the services. ---- WEDOWEE News Feb. 8th Marriage licenses were issued in the office of the Probate Judge last week to six couples as follows: Wm. E. Sprayberry and Miss Ruby Henderson Paschal H. Brooks and Miss Eunice Clark Shirley T. Foster and Miss Evie Truett Howard Young and Miss Bertie Rice Howard Potts and Miss Lucile Morris ---- County court was in session on Monday. Among the cases tried was that of Lonza McCord who was arrested last week near Woodland by Sheriff Payne and 13 gallons of liquor reported to be in his new Ford car. McCord plead guilty and was fined $200. and costs. The car was confiscated. --- WEHADKEE News Feb. 7th Mrs. James Waldrep died last Friday at her home in Chambers county, following a long period of declining health. Her remains were brought to Big Springs church Saturday for burial. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock. The deceased was about 70 years of age. She formerly lived near Omaha community where she had many friends. Her husband preceded her across the river of death five years ago. --- REMAINS OF SAM ROBERTS BURIED AT CONCORD FEB. 2nd The remains of Sam Roberts who was accidentally killed near Lanett on Feb. 1st, were interred at Concord last Wednesday afternoon. He was 26 years of age, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roberts, and had been married less than a year. He had many friends who lament his untimely death. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 16, 1927 FORMER ROANOKE MAN DIED IN ATLANTA FEB. 13th John Louie Satterwhite, president of the Satterwhite Furniture Company, died Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at his residence, 292 Ninth St., after a short illness brought on by exhaustion and heart trouble. Born Oct. 23, 1873, in Harris County, Georgia, Mr. Satterwhite was one of the present day pioneers in the field of retail furniture trade in Atlanta, spending 31 years in successful work in the furniture business and associated other firms. Mr. Satterwhite two years ago owned his own business at 292 Peachtree street. He was assisted in the organization of this firm by his brothers and other who had confidence in his integrity, business ability and popularity with the retail furniture customers of Atlanta, its suburbs and trading territory. The Atlanta Constitution, Feb. 14th. --- MRS. TIB TAYLOR BURIED AT LEBANON YESTERDAY The funeral and interment of Mrs. Tib Taylor occurred yesterday morning at Lebanon Christian church, three miles north of town. Death came to her Monday morning at the home of her son Mr. Walter Taylor in Roanoke. Two other sons, Messrs. Albert and Edgar Taylor reside here. The other children, Mr. Barnes Taylor of Talladega and Mrs. Albert Barnes, with her daughter of Cullman, were called here by the fatal illness of their mother who was stricken with paralysis last Thursday. Mrs. Taylor was a long time member of the Lebanon church and a respected resident of this section. She was 76 years of age. Many friends attended the funeral services, which were conducted by Elders O.A. Moore and Belt White. ---- DEATH OF MR. W.S. GREEN OCCURRED LAST EVENING W. Sam Green died at 6:30 last evening at his home in this place. He was stricken with paralysis about six months ago but recovered sufficiently to get about town up until recently. The remains will be carried this evening to Paran church where funeral and interment will occur at three o'clock. Mr. Green came to Roanoke several years ago from Heard County, Georgia and served as police chief for quite a while. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Green regret his untimely death. --- BROTHER OF MRS. EVELYN GREENE SERIOUSLY HURT AT MILL Scottsboro, Ala., Feb. 10th One man was killed and three others probably fatally injured in a boiler explosion at Young's sawmill at Pisgah, a small community on Sand mountain, late today. The dead is Walter Messer. The injured are Marshall Rogers with a fractured skull; John Woodsin, a leg torn off and bruises and burns; Oscar Cole, severe burns and bruises. Mr. Messer was instantly killed. He had just entered the sawmill on business when the boiler exploded, scalding him to death. Mr. Marshall Rogers is a brother of Mrs. Evelyn Greene of Roanoke,Randolph county, who was called Friday to attend the unfortunate man, who was formerly a resident of north Randolph county. He is in a hospital in Fort Payne. ---- JOSEPH P. JORDAN DIED IN ATLANTA ON FRIDAY Mr. Joseph P. Jordan, son of Mrs. M.A. Jordan, died in Atlanta last Friday afternoon, following an operation performed Tuesday of that week. He had resided in that city for several years but was born and reared in the northern part of Chambers county. Interment was in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon. The funeral was attended here by Mr. Cumbee Jordan and Leon Jordan. The mother and Mr. Glenn Jordan were prevented by illness from going to Atlanta. The deceased was well known throughout this section. He was full of energy and had made good headway in the business world. He was a member of the Baptist church since childhood. He is survived by his wife and two children, the oldest being married. The deceased's widow is reported to be in a serious condition, her health having been bad for several months. ---- JOHN T. DANIEL DIED SUDDENLY HERE THIS MORNING Rev. John T. Daniel who moved to Roanoke from near Graham about three months ago, died suddenly early this morning at his home on Peachtree street. He was 53 years old and is survived by his widow, six children, three brothers and two sisters. His aged father Rev. I.N. Daniel also survives him. Mr. Daniel was a minister of the Baptist church and at the time of his death was pastor of Liberty church. He was an upright citizen. The burial will probably be at Union Grove cemetery across the Georgia line beyond Rock Mills. ---- ROCK STAND News Feb. 14th This community was saddened last Wednesday by the death of "Aunt" Manda Rainey. Death came as a relief after a continued illness and much suffering. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved family. Two daughters, Mrs. Beverly and Mrs. Bailey live in our community. --- LOCAL News Mr. J.T. Sands and family moved on Sunday to East Lake, Florida. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 23, 1927 REV. C.M. DOLLAR DEAD AT 74 YEARS One of the oldest and best known citizens of Randolph county died when Rev. C.M. Dollar passed away at his home at Rock Stand at 2:30 Monday morning. He was 74 years of age and had been in feeble health for many months. He had been a minister in the Christian church for 48 years. Two of his sons, Revs. John and Jesse Dollar are also ministers in the same church. Funeral and interment occurred at Rock Springs at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning with many friends in attendance. Mr. Dollar is survived by his wife, six sons and four daughters. This is the first death in this large family. Mr. Dollar had long been a prominent and active citizen of Randolph county. He had rendered faithful service to his church and his state. The passing of such a man is a public loss. ---- HOSPITAL News John T. Frost of Lowell was brought to the Sanitorium last Wednesday for treatment, having had the misfortune to have one of his eyes knocked out while at work in the machine shop at the cotton mill. --- WEDOWEE News Feb. 22nd Several from Wedowee attended the funeral on Friday at White's Chapel of Mrs. Ocie Lena Weathers Driver, who was killed in an automobile wreck near Tuskegee. --- ROCK STAND News Feb. 21st This community was greatly shocked and saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Mrs. Ocelena Driver who was drowned in a lake six miles from Tuskegee last Wednesday night, from an automobile accident. The driver of the car in which she was riding was blinded by the lights of an on-coming car which caused him to miss the bridge. The occupants of the other car did not stop. Mrs. Driver was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Weathers of this place. Our sympathy goes out to the family. The deceased was a former teacher of this place. Her body ws brought home and interred at White's Chapel on Friday afternoon after services conducted by Rev. S.R. Towns. A large number of friends and relatives attended. ---- SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. JOHN R. GREEN ON SATURDAY Wehadkee, Feb. 21st A gloom of sorrow was cast over this community Saturday afternoon when it was announced that Mrs. John R. Green had suddenly died at her home near Omaha. She had been in feeble health for many months bu ther death was unexpected. She had just walked across the room and laid down when the end came. The deceased was 54 years old and had been a member of the Baptist church for many years. The high esteem in which she was held was manifested by the many beautiful flowers displayed upon the casket. The deceased is survived by a husband and six children who have the sympathy of many friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.H. Prince at Big Springs church on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation. --- FORMER RANDOLPH COUNTY LADY DROWNED IN MACON COUNTY FEB. 17th Tuskegee, Ala., Feb. 17th Two women, Mrs. Ocie Lena Driver, age 22 of Roanoke, and Mrs. Lovie Victoria Driver, age 28 of Fort Davis were drowned early today in a lake on the Tuskegee - Columbus highway, after the automobile in which they were riding overturned off a bridge. Ernest Driver, husband of Mrs.Lovie Victoria Driver, was driving the car that toppled into the 20 foot lake. He is said to have been trying to prevent hitting another car which was speeding past them. Four persons were in the Ford roadster that capsized into the lake, but the two men were able to swim out and went for help. The tragedy occurred about six miles from Tuskegee. The Driver party was returning from from Columbus. The car that was meeting them on the pike is reported to have been going at a high rate of speed and the occupants refused to stop to render aid it is said. Lights on the big car are said to have blinded Mr. Driver. Mrs. Ocie Driver was the wife of William H. Driver and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Weathers of Roanoke. The other victim Mrs. Ernest Driver was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kinsual of Hartford, Ala. According to C.S. Nelson, deputy coroner of Macon county, neither of the women sustained any broken bones or internal injuries. The lake in which they drowned is said to have been between 15 to 20 feet in depth. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Driver had been residing at Fort Davis for the past week. He is a contractor.
