Huey at the corner of Chesnut street and Maple drive is nearing completion. The plant will be operated by Ed Simonton who will handle Pan-Am products. He will take charge next week and will give notice later of the formal date of opening, which the public will await with interest. --- LOWELL News Mrs. S.T. Philpott is sick. --- Mr. H. Bishop and Mr. A.T. Browning on Sunday. --- HAYWOOD News April 4th Mr. Frank Benefield of Hobson visited "Uncle" Jim Shelnutt on Sunday, who is very feeble. He is in his 82nd year. --- FOREST HOME News April 3rd Mr. Howard Muldrew and Miss Ola House were married today. --- GLENN, GEORGIA News April 4th Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knight and little son of Newnan, Georgia spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Knight. --- Mrs. Newt Adams is quite sick with the flu. --- STROUD News April 4th Mr. John Will Still and Miss WIllie B. Mobley were married Sunday at LaFayette by Rev. J.T. Satterwhite. --- HIGHWAY News April 4th Mr. William Perthoy died Saturday morning of pneumonia and was buried Sunday. He leaves a wife and many friends to mourn his death. --- Mrs. Docia Benefield spent the latter part of last week with her mother Mrs. Madden. --- Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Cantrell visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cantrell and also Mr. and Mrs. George Brown on Sunday. --- RANDOLPH COUNTY LADY WEDS GENTLEMAN IN THE WEST Ofelia, Ala., March 30th It will be interesting to a number in this section to learn that Mr. J.W. T. Hendon of Chandler Springs went to Birmingham on March 25th where he joined his daughter Miss Annie Hendon and granddaughter Frances and accompanied them to Kansas City, leaving Birmingham Saturday night. There, Miss Annie Hendon was met by her fiancee Mr. W.J. Gaddy of Goodwell, Oklahoma and they were united in matrimony. Immediately after the ceremony they boarded the train for the groom's home in Goodwell. Only a few friends knew of the courtship which had existed for three years. It is understood that Mr. Hendon will make his home with them for awhile. This family has always lived in Randolph county. Mr. Hendon and the late Mrs. Hendon reared their five children in this community. The many friends of Miss Annie in this community extend to her and Mr. Gaddy best wishes. ---- LOCAL News The adopted child of Mr. and Mrs. Waller Owens will be operated on for appendicitis this afternoon. --- A.J. Pope was called to Franklin, Georgia yesterday by the serious illness of his mother. --- Mrs. J.C. Crawley of Greenville, S.C. is here to spend a few weeks with her brothers, T.L. and J.M. Belcher and her sister, Mrs. J.W. Danielly. --- The Leader has received an order from Jesse L. Lucas for the Leader to be sent to him at Puerto Castilla, Honduras, Central America. He left his home in Malone on April 1st to accept a job with a railroad in that location. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 13, 1927 LOCAL News Monday afternoon, the editor of the Leader enjoyed a visit from W.W. Cofield, who is a member of the staff of General May, commander of the Fourth Brigade, United Confederate Veterans with the rank of Major, who had just returned at noon from attending the general soldiers reunion at Tampa, Florida. He was delighted with his trip and the treatment accorded the veterans in that balmy clime. He estimated that about one thousand veterans were in attendance. By a rare turn of good fortune, Maj. Cofield was assigned to the home of an aged widow who proved to be closely related to several of the former's war comrades in the same company. This recalled many incidents of those trying days that proved of interest to both hostess and guest. ---- CHAMBERS COUNTY SHERIFF AND HIS HELPER ARE WOUNDED BY A NEGRO Lafayette, Ala., April 10th Sheriff John W. Lane of Chambers county and Luther Morman of Five Points suffered severe wounds when an attempt was made to arrest Bob Williams, a negro, who is said to have started a disturbance at a negro church near Five Points this afternoon. The negro was wounded in the exchange of shots when a negro picked up the sheriff's pistol and fired on the alleged disturber. Following the shooting, the negro Williams escaped to a swamp where he was surrounded by other negroes and held at bay until former sheriff R.G. Simpson arrived on the scene and affected a capture. The prisoner was lodged in the county jail at Opelika for safe keeping as feeling was running high and fears were felt for his safety. Reports from Opelika are to the affect that Sheriff Betts is prepared to protect the prisoner should an attempt be made to storm the bastille. No apprehension if felt but the sheriff announced that he would not be taken unaware. While the wounds are very painful, neither of the men are considered in a serious condition. The negro's wounds are giving trouble and physicians advise against moving him further. Lane is serving his third term as sheriff of Chambers county and this is the first time that he is reported to have had trouble in making an arrest. ---- ROCK STAND News April 11th We are very sorry to have to report the death of two more of Mr. T.N. Bailey's children, Grace and Janet. Another one is very low. We are so sorry for these good people and trust that it may be the Lord's will to stay the hand of affliction in this once happy home. --- ROCK MILLS News April 11th After many months of suffering, the soul of Mrs. C.V. Atkinson passed into the great unknown last Friday. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. May God fill this vacant place with his love and comfort their bleeding hearts. --- Mr. and Mrs. Posey Bennett and children of LaGrange visited Mrs. Emma Phillips last Sunday. --- Mrs. Ervin Hall is very ill. --- NEWELL News Mrs. Lina Barrow Austin of Atlanta is visiting her father Mr. T.J. Lovvorn. --- Last Monday night, death visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cofield and claimed their little son Junior. He was a little over a year old and had been sick several days. Death came while he was in a hospital in Atlanta. Burial took place at Union on Wednesday, April 6th. We offer our kindest sympathy and pray that God may richly bless each member of the family. --- WEHADKEE News April 12th We are sorry to report that Mr. Bud Pittman had the misfortune to get his leg broken below the knee several days ago while hauling wood. Just a few days previous his little boy fell from a high veranda and broke his arm. They have the sympathy of many friends. The neighbors will meet tomorrow to prepare the land for Mr. Pittman's crop. --- Mrs. Julia Webb is seriously ill at her home near Omaha community. --- DEATH OF MRS. MARY JANE POPE Mr. A.J. Pope was called to Franklin, Georgia last week by the illness of his mother Mrs. Mary Jane Pope who died Wednesday afternoon. Funeral and interment were held at Prospect church in Texas, Georgia on Thursday. She was eighty years of age and had been a member of the Baptist church since early womanhood. She was the mother of eleven children, four of whom are dead. She is also survived by 51 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. Mrs. Pope lost her husband Mr. William Pope 33 years ago. ---- LOCAL News Mr. Mullendore and wife and son were called to Munford on Sunday morning by the serious illness of Mrs. Mullendore's mother Mrs. Ed Clark. --- Mrs. Mamie Green, head nurse at the Knight Sanitorium, went over to LaGrange on Saturday to attend the marriage of her sister Miss Vera Alice Post to Mr. Edward Garland Griggs, both of LaGrange. --- Mr. and Mrs. L.L. James have a fine new son at their home born last Friday. His name is William Petree, in honor of his maternal grandfather who was a useful citizen of Franklin county during his long life. --- Many friends regret to note that Mrs. James T. Shanks was stricken with paralysis on Sunday morning and her condition remains serious. The daughters Mrs. J.H. Ingram of Lineville and Miss Florence Shanks of New York have arrived to be with their mother. --- Roanoke friends of the family will regret to learn of the death in Jacksonville, Florida last Thursday of Mr. Frank Ambrose, the only brother of Mrs. Ora Trent, who recently moved from this place to Jacksonville. He had several times visited his sister and parents here and was a genial gentleman. --- Sam D. Chewning arrived Monday from Texas and will remain here till June. --- Many friends of our townsman Sam F. Abernathy sympathize with him in the death of his brother John. R.B. Abernathy, a fine citizen of LaFayette, which occurred in that town last Wednesday afternoon following an operation. Many from here attended the funeral on Thursday. The deceased was for many years probate clerk and had many friends. --- A telegram was received from R.W. Griffin by the family here that brought the sad news that his brother Ben F. Griffin died Friday afternoon in Dallas, Texas. In his young manhood the deceased made his home here and had many friends among the older citizens who regret to learn of his death. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 20, 1927 DEATH OF AN AGED CITIZEN Mr. Hick Mickle died at his home on Radney street in Roanoke at one o'clock Tuesday morning. The remains were taken to Broughton where interment was made at four in the afternoon. Rev. H.F. Keeble was in charge of the services. Mr. Mickle was 76 years of age and had lived in this county the greater part of his life. --- WEDOWEE News April 19th Mr. and Mrs. N.D. Burson spent last week at Fort Payne visiting Mr. Burson's brother who has been very ill. --- LOCAL News Last week, Mrs. Mamie Green was married to Mr. John H. Koenig of Alton, Ill. The ceremony was performed by the pastor of the Presbyterian church in LaGrange. Mr. Koenig will have headquarters in LaGrange for the time being. --- MRS. J.T. SHANKS DIED AT SEVEN THIS MORNING Mrs. J.T. Shanks who was stricken by paralysis on April 10th, passed away at her home here this morning at seven o'clock. Mrs. Shanks was about seventy years old and had been in rather feeble health for the last thirty years. Funeral services will be conducted at the home by Rev. N.H. Abernathy on Thursday afternoon at three o'clock, followed by interment in the city cemetery. ---- MRS. MULLENDORE'S MOTHER DIED AT MUNFORD APRIL 15th Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Mullendore and son Pierce returned Monday night from Munford where the mother of Mrs. Mullendore, Mrs. Edward Clark, died Friday night. Interment was at the old home church Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of friends. Mrs. Clark was 76 years of age and was an honored resident of that section for many years. --- GEO. FORRESTER LOSES FATHER Mr. and Mrs. Geo. M. Forrester left Sunday night in response to at telegram announcing the sudden death of the former's father, Mr. Robert Forrester at Cameron, in south Georgia. The funeral and interment were at Albany, Georgia. The many friends of this couple sympathize with them in their affliction. ---- DEATH OF MR. D.A. WARLICK C.E. Warlick received the news Saturday night of the death of his oldest brother Mr. D.A. Warlick, which occurred in Macon, Georgia. The message came too late for the former to be present at the funeral held Sunday. --- WEHADKEE News April 18th Last Thursday morning the spirit of Mrs. Homer Janney took its flight to the other world. She had been in failing health for many months and death came as a kind messenger to relieve her of her sufferings. The deceased was in the prime of life. She was a loving companion and a devoted mother. She is survived by a husband and three children. Interment was made at Ridgeway church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Herman Colwell. --- Mr. J.M. Fincher celebrated his 72nd birthday. He is one of our oldest citizens. May he live to see many more happy birthdays. --- MALONE News April 18th The sad news reached here Saturday of the death at Mellow Valley of Mrs. Lizzie Wood, sister of Mrs. A.J. Moncus. She was carried to Pleasant Hill for funeral services. --- HIGHWAY News April 18th Mr. Cicero Madden of Ephesus spent the weekend with his parents Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Madden. --- HAYWOOD News April 18th Death entered Mr. George Holliway's home on the 13th and took away his daughter Mrs. Lucy Johnson. Besides her husband and infant nine days old, she leaves a father, mother, several brothers and sisters and a host of relatives and friends. --- LEVEL ROAD News April 18th Mrs. Lee Moore of this place was called last week to north Alabama to see her brother Mr. J.C. Burson who was in a serious condition. She returned yesterday, after spending three or four days up there. Mr. Burson was improving when she left him. --- JONES FAMILY REUNION On East Sunday morning was held at the lovely country home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Britt Jones near Roanoke, a family reunion of their sons and daughters, their husbands and wives and several grandchildren. A most enjoyable day was spent and at the noon hour on the beautiful lawn under the spreading trees, a gorgeous feast was spread and enjoyed by all. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Jones and children of Bessemer Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Jones of Atlanta Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Vinson and children of Roanoke Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Fallow and children of LaGrange Dr. and Mrs. F.W. Beall Jr. of Roanoke Britt and Nelson Jones of Roanoke Mrs. Ella P. Beall of Roanoke Mrs. Williams of Atlanta Mr. Arnett of LaGrange Miss Annie Cole Kelly of Bessemer ---- LOWELL News Mrs. S.L. Philpott died last week after an extended illness. --- LOCAL News Leroy Rochester is in the Knight Sanitorium for treatment. He fell from a truck some days ago. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 27, 1927 DEATH OF MRS. MARY ALLEN Mrs. Mary Allen, age 77, died Monday morning at Taylor's Cross Roads at the home of her son, A.L. Allen. She was buried Monday afternoon at four o'clock at Lebanon. Her husband died in 1919. A.L. Allen of Roanoke and O.H. Allen of Atlanta are children of the deceased. --- HOPEWELL News April 25th This community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Pearl Harmon who died at her father's home at Ofelia last Thursday night. She had been ill for some time. --- OFELIA News April 25th Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Hampton lost their daughter Pearl on April 21st, in her 22nd year. --- ROCK STAND News April 25th Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Pinkard have adopted a six year old orphan boy. We are pleased to note this kind hearted spirit of our neighbors. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Tella Straughn of Evergreen is here visiting her sisters, Mrs. Joe Huey and Mrs. Charlie Sikes. --- Peter Samuel Rambokas arrived Sunday at the home of his parnes Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rambokas. --- IN MEMORY OF MRS. PHILPOTT The death angel visited our home the 15th and took our loved one away, Mrs. Dusky Philpott. How we do miss her but we realize that Jesus had a better home prepared for her, although she left a sad home and broken hearts behind. As she said just before she departed from this life, if it were the Lord's will for her to stay she would be glad but if not she would have to go and we believe she has gone to a happy home where there will be no more sorrow or pain. We cannot express how thankful we are to the good friends and neighbors for their sympathy and kindness toward us during the sickness and death of our dear one. Especially do we thank Mrs. Baker who was so loyal and kind in all good deeds. Mrs. Philpott leaves behind a husband and two children, three brothers and three sisters and a mother, and a host of friends to mourn her death. May God bless every one is our prayer. S.T.
