Thompson, one of the most prominent men of this section, died at his home in Wadley last Sunday afternoon. His health had not been robust for several years but this death came suddenly. Funeral and interment occurred in Wadley at ten Tuesday morning in the presence of a large assemblage of relatives and friends of this good man and useful citizen. Mr. Thompson was a man of ability and was active in public service in various ways. He was a member of the Methodist church and had served in the state legislature. He will be greatly missed by the large circle of friends who knew and loved him. ---- NEW HOME News Oct. 3rd Mr. Lovvorn Lipham of Pine and sister Miss Effie Lipham spent Sunday night with their brother J.M. Lipham. --- Mrs. C.C. Halpin visited relatives in Anniston and Pell City three days last week. She was accompanied by her brother and sister Mr. Lovvorn Lipham and Miss Effie Lipham. --- Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Fowler left last week for Colorado, Texas to make their home there. --- ROCK MILLS News Oct. 4th This community was saddened last Saturday when the news was spread that Mr. Eric Pitts, a late resident of this community, was dead at a hospital in his newly adopted home in south Georgia. Mr. Pitts was a son of the late Mr. H.H. Pitts of Rock Mills. He moved from this place last year to a new field of business in south Georgia where he has been engaged until his untimely death last week. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the dear friends and neighbors of Wadley and Pleasant Hill for the kindness and sympathy shown us during the sickness and death of our dear husband and father. Waller and children ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 12, 1927 MR. JOHN A. ROBERTS DIED IN WADLEY ON SATURDAY The town of Wadley and the county of Randolph have lost another good citizen. Six days following the death of Mr. R.W. Thompson, which occurred in Wadley, Oct. 2nd, Mr. John A. Roberts died on Saturday, Oct. 8th, at this home in that place. He had been ill several weeks. He was an active, useful citizen and a member of the Southern Methodist church. His death will prove quite a loss to his community and cunty as well to his family. Interment was at Wadley Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation, following services held in the home. Mr. Roberts life was spent in this county. --- FORMER CHAMBERS COUNTY MAN DIED IN OPELIKA SUNDAY J.B. Tatum, former sheriff of Chambers county, committed suicide at his home in Opelika at 9 o'clock last night, the act being attributed to prolonged ill health. He shot himself once in the right temple, dying instantly. Mr. Tatum was stricken with paralysis a few years ago and is understood to have brooded much over his condition. He moved to the old Taylor place in this city, three months ago, where he resided at the time of his death. Funeral service is to be held at the First Methodist church in LaFayette at 3 p.m. today with Rev. T.H. Johnson of LaFayette and Rev. N.H. Abernethy of Roanoke, officiating. The deceased is survived by two sons, Howard Tatum and Jack Tatum. His wife died four years ago. Four brothers also survive; A.C. Tatum of Opelika; C.A. Tatum of West Point; L.D. Tatum of Birmingham and S.H. Tatum of Roanoke. The deceased was a member of the First Methodist church in LaFaytte, he was a Mason, a Shriner, belonged to Knights of Pythias and the Elks. He was born in Chambers county and lived there practically all of his life. For many years Mr. Tatum was prominent in the political affairs of his county and he leaves legions of warm personal friends who mourn his demise. Breed, a well known citizen of Lowell, died last Thursday. He had been in bad health for several years. The remains were interred at the cemetery in this place on Friday. --- Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mears left Sunday afternoon for their home in Muskogee, Oklahoma after a visit of several weeks to their parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Mears near town and other relatives in this county. --- The Leader learns that a car was wrecked in the edge of LaFayette last Wednesday night in which a young man named Wyche was killed, a young man named Blanton and a youn glady seriously injured. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 19, 1927 TRAGIC DEMISE OF MR. J.W. WORD ON OCT. 14th This community was greatly shocked last Friday afternoon to learn that Mr. J.W. Word had met his death by a pistol shot through the head, fired by his own hand. The dreadful tragedy occurred shortly after one-thirty. Mr. Word had driven two miles northeast of town, stopping his car on the road near Mr. E.T. Pike's home. An ambulance was rushed to the scene and the unfortunate man was hurried to the hospital where he died a few minutes after arriving there. Mr. Word was 44 years of age, and had spent the greater part of his life in western Georgia. The remains were taken on Saturday afternoon to Bowdon near the scene of his boyhood, where they were interred Sunday afternoon after services conducted by Mr. Edwards of Waco, Georgia, a Baptist minister who had been Mr. Word's pastor for a number of years and who paid a high tribute to his character. A service was also held in the home of the deceased in Roanoke on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W.E. Lockler. He and a number of other Roanoke people accompanied the grief stricken family with the remains to Bowdon. Mr. Word came to Roanoke thirteen months ago from LaGrange and was representing the Metropolitan Insurance Co. He had made a very favorable impression upon all who were associated with him. In letters found on his person it was learned that he was laboring under financial troubles which overtook him before he left Georgia. The strain on his mind overbalanced his better judgment. Mr. Word is survived by a wife and six children who have the sincere sympathy of the community. He and his family had seen better, happier days before the shadows of adversity fell across their pathway. ---- (NOTE from transcriber: Some of the census's as well as the Alabama death index and the World War 1 Draft Reg. card show the surname as WARD) SANITORIUM News K.M. Clegg had a finger hurt so badly that he was brought to the sanitorium to have it removed a few days ago. -- Oscie Smith, a negro of Newell, was brought here last week and had both eyes removed as a result of having been shot in the face. --- NOTICE TO NON-RESIDENTS In the matter of the Last Will and Testament of Jno. We regret losting him in the community. --- OFELIA News Oct. 17th Mr. Cleveland Stewart and Miss Bessie Cofield were happily married at the bride's home last Saturday night. --- LOCAL News Mrs. R.T. West and daughter Miss Martha are preparing to leave in a day or so for Deland, Florida, their future home. --- Mr. John Fausett left Sunday afternoon for Deland, Florida where he will spend several weeks with his daughter Mrs. Rufus West. --- Rev. R.B. Hester performed the marriage ceremony last Saturday in this city for Mr. P.F. Storey and Miss Cassie GIlmore, well known residents of Lowell. --- Mrs. R.E. Britt and granddaughter little Miss Mildred Barker of Rock Mills, left Sunday for Los Angeles, California where they will make their future home. The will be joined in the near future by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hale. The latter before her recent marriage was Mrs. Lola Barker, daughter of Mrs. Britt. ---- Interesting to a wide circle of friends in Alabama and Georgia was the marriage of Mrs. Lola Barker and Mr. Jack Hale, which was solemnized Monday, Oct. 10th, in Atlanta. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. R.E. Britt of Rock Mills. The groom is the daughter of Mrs. R.E. Britt of Rock Mills. The groom is of a prominent Sedalia, Missouri family. Mr. and Mrs. Hale will make their home in California where Mr. Hale is connected with the picture industry. --- W.W. Word, eldest son of Mrs. J.W. Word, accompanied by her father's brother from Texas, was in town Monday and arranged to have a sale of his mother's hosuehold effects at the residence on Saturday Oct. 29th. Mrs. Word and children will move to Atlanta where W.W. Word has a position. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 26, 1927 TRAGIC DEATH OF MISS ANNIE RAE BROWN ON THE 19th The death of Miss Annie Rae Brown at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hurley Brown, this city, last Wednesday evening, after an illness of about ten hours, was a tragedy that shocked this entire community and aroused the warmest sympathy for the stricken family. The deceased was only eighteen years of age and her untimely end, under the circumstances, makes her going doubly sad. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the First Christian church, conducted by Rev. J.D. Dollar, assisted by Rev. H.F. Keeble. A large company of sympathetic friends was present at the funeral rites and followed the remains to the last resting place in the cemetery of this city. ---- NAPOLEON News Oct. 24th Mr. Loyd Kimbrell and Miss Audie Prince were married yesterday. --- BROUGHTON News Oct. 25th Mr. and Mrs. Doss Sherrer were called to Langdale last week by the illness of their son-in-law Mr. Clarence Hubbard who is not expected to live long. --- HAYWOOD News Oct. 24th Mr. Irvin Chase and Miss Loma Kirby were married on Saturday. --- Mr. Carl Carr and Miss Mattie Lou Wilson were married on Sunday. --- A large crowd was at the birthday dinner of Mr. and Mrs. John Kirby yesterday. He is 79 and she is 69 years old. A bountiful dinner was spread and a happier crowd would be hard to find. Judge Heflin of Roanoke delivered a fine discourse in the afternoon which was very much enjoyed. ---- ROCK MILLS News Oct. 18th Mr. John McKinney died here Saturday after a long illness. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his death. --- Mr. Charlie Atkinson and Mrs. Owens were married on Sunday evening. Rev. John Taylor officiated. --- UNION HILL News Oct. 24th This community was made sad early last week when the news reached here that death had visited the home of Mr. Louis Bailey and taken his brother Mr. Jasper Bailey, home to rest. He was buried here Tuesday afternoon.
