Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net July 19, 2006, 10:23 am The Roanoke Leader December 1927 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for DECEMBER 1927 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 7, 1927 WEDOWEE News Dec. 6th Many from Wedowee attended the funeral of Mr. Mack Mashburn which was held at Midway church last Friday afternoon. the deceased was born and reared near Wedowee and spent the greater part of his life here where he had a host of friends. --- Mrs. Tensie Gibbs of Edwardsville is spending some time with her nephew Mr. J.W. Carlisle and her nieces Misses Effie and Ethyl Carisle. --- PINE HILL News Dec. 5th Funeral services for Mrs. Alf Butler of Bowdon were held here at Poplar Springs last Wednesday. She was a former resident of this community and had a host of friends who were grieved at her going. --- SUDDEN DEATH CALLS A GOOD ROANOKE CITIZEN Many people throughout this section of the state learn with sincere regret of the sudden death of Mr. Mack M. Mashburn which occurred at nine o'clock last Wednesday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.L.B. Taylor, one mile north of town where Mr. and Mrs. Mashburn had lately moved to from this city. Mr. Mashburn had been afflicted with heart trouble for several years but made a brave effort to keep up and at work. That he should be cut down in the prime of life, leaving a devoted wife and five children, is exceedingly sad. But he has made a good record and one that his family and friends can turn to with pride and pleasure. Mr. Mashburn was a member of the Methodist church. He was honorable and upright in all his dealings. By the force of his gentleness and integrity he won a multitude of friends. Many of these gathered Thursday afternoon at Midway church, near Wedowee, where the deceased held his membership, to pay a tribute of sincere respect to his memory and where the body was laid to rest. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. T.L. McDonald of Roanoke. ---- SADNESS VISITS HOME OF G.W. BRADLEY IN ROANOKE Last Thursday, while the bodies of the twin babies of their daughter Mrs. Mary Lizzie Britt lay in death in their home in this city, Mr. and Mrs. George Bradley received a telegram announcing the death early that morning in Atlanta of their brother, Mr. J. Lee Bradley, who formerly resided in Roanoke. Both Mr. G.W. Bradley and his daughter Mrs. Britt were confined to the home at the time by illness but the former states that friends and neighbors were very kind to the family in their heavy affliction, these services being fully appreciated. ---- DEATH OF JUDGE HINES REGRETTED IN RANDOLPH COUNTY The death of Judge James A. Hines in his home in LaFayette at one o'clock this morning, after an illness of several days, will bring sadness to the many friends in this county of this admirable gentleman. He was only recently appointed associate judge of this circuit and was making an excellent record. He was born and reared at Standing Rock and had practiced law in LaFayette since early manhood. He was an active member of the Methodist church. His untimely end is a great public loss. He leaves a wife and several children. --- FORMER STROUD RESIDENT DIED IN LANGDALE NOV. 30th The long and useful life of Willis Simpson Johnson came to an end last Wednesday in the late afternoon, at his home in Langdale, following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Johnson was born in Chambers county, near Stroud, on March 18, 1852. His next birthday would have made him 76 years old. The West Point News ---- DEATH CLAIMS AN AGED CITIZEN OF LINEVILLE Lineville, Ala., Dec. 3rd W.D. Haynes, pioneer citizen, merchant and first president of the Lineville National Bank, the oldest banking institution in this county, and father of Assistant Attorney General Haynes, died Thursday at the home of his daughter Mrs. R.H. Moon. He was 96 years old. Mr. Haynes had been active in business for more than 60 years. He was a merchant here during the War Between the States, and he organized and was the first president of the Lineville National Bank and was chairman of its board of directors at the time of his death. The Birmingham News ---- WOODLAND News Nov. 28th Mr. Leon Traylor and Miss Thelma Johnson were married last Sunday. --- PROVIDENCE News Nov. 28th Mr. Burl Spratlin from Oklahoma is visiting relatives here this week. --- WEHADKEE News Nov. 28th Mr. Burrell Walker and Miss Minnie Bowen were happily married one week ago. --- LEVEL ROAD Dec. 5th Euel Camp, son of Mr. Green Camp, was accidentally shot Nov. 27th with a shot gun while at the home of Mr. R.L. Moore, by one of Mr. Moore's boys, who was pranking with the gun and and the gun accidentally went off. He is reported as doing well at this writing. --- SPRINGFIELD News Dec, 5th Mr. Watson Daugherty returned home Friday from a hospital in Louisiana where he has had eight operations. He will go back to the hospital there in May 1928. ---- SWAGG News Dec. 5th Mr. Dole Lipham and family from Colorado, Texas are visiting relatives in the Milner community. --- CARD OF APPRECIATION One who has not experienced sorrow cannot know just what it means for neighbors, friends and loved ones to minister, cheer and comfort when such deep sorrow comes. Mashburn and children ---- FOREST HOME News Dec. 5th "Aunt" Lou Barfield who fell some time ago, died Nov. 30th at the home of her brother Mr. S.T. Barfield. She was 80 years, 5 months and 8 days old. Her remains were laid to rest in Paran cemetery. She became a member of the Paran church when about sixteen years of age. Aunt Lou leaves two brothers, a host of relatives and friends. ---- INVITATIONS ISSUED The following invitations have been issued to friends: Mr. and Mrs. William A. Wilfe request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Pattie Nelle to Mr. Hubert Armour Bonner on Tuesday afternoon, the 20th of December, 1927 at four o'clock at the First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Alabama. --- LOCAL News The Leader has learned of the marriage in Vero Beach, Florida of Mrs. M.L. Crenshaw, former well known resident of this section, to Mr. H.J. Young, one of the officials of that city. The news will be read with interest by Mrs. Young's many friends back home. --- Mr. Henry Vickers and Miss Vera Knight were married in Wedowee recently. --- Nelson McDow is reported to be quite ill in LaGrange, were he is visiting his brother J.R. McDow. --- Mr. John F. Gittings has returned from Indiana to spend the winter with his son J.F. Gittings. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 14, 1927 FUNERAL OF MR. GOODWIN WILL BE HELD AT 3:00 The funeral of Mr. Thomas Camp Goodwin will be held at three o'clock this afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with the pastor Dr. R.M. Mann of Opelika in charge. Interment will follow in the city cemetery. Mr. Goodwin's death came suddenly Tuesday morning at 3 o'clock. He had been almost an invalid for several years but had apparently been better for several days before the sudden attack which carried him beyond the reach of pain and anxious waiting. In his going his wife and daughter are bereft of a gentle, loving husband and father, his church a faithful member and his community an upright citizen. Mr. Goodwin was a perfect gentleman who commanded the respect and admiration of all who knew him. ---- BIG SPRINGS News Dec. 12th Miss Eunice Freeman and Mr. Emmitt Brown were happily married Sunday afternoon. We wish the young couple a happy life. --- FOREST HOME News Dec. 11th Mrs. L.H. Houze was called to the bedside of her aunt, Mrs. Fronia Hunter at Standing Rock last Saturday afternoon. --- BROUGHTON News Dec. 12th The birthday dinner of Mr. Bud Baldwin yesterday was enjoyed by his children, grandchildren and a host of friends. Mr. Baldwin was 74 years of age. --- LOCAL News Roy Sudduth arrived last Thursday from Amarillo, Texas and is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Sudduth near town. --- Mr. Winters Sampson arrived this morning from Columbus, Ohio to attend the funeral of his father-in-law Mr. Goodwin and will remain over some time. --- Mrs. Pullen Fuller and little son leave today for their home at Port Arthur, Texas after a visit of several weeks to the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Brumbeloe. --- Mrs. Burgess Waller is sick in Birmingham at the home of her daughter Mrs. W.F. Pool. --- The friends of Mrs. Henry W. Davis will regret to learn that she is ill at the home of her niece Mrs. Olin Stevenson, having suffered a stroke of paralysis one week ago. --- H. Lee Baskin and family moved Monday to Opelika. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 21, 1927 WEDOWEE News Dec. 20th Mr. George Heard, age 77 years, former superintendant of the County Farm, died suddenly on Thursday morning at his home about one mile south of Wedowee. --- DEATH OF M.B. CARLISLE OCCURRED ON SATURDAY Death came to relieve Mr. Mack B. Carlisle of his sufferings at his home in this place at eight o'clock last Saturday evening. He had been in declining health for a long while and confined to his home for several weeks, being forced at last to give up the struggle and enter into rest. Mr. Carlisle was a member of one of the oldest and best known east Alabama families. He came to Roanoke in young manhood and engated in business when Roanoke was a small town. He had made this place his home most of the time and had a large circle of friends. A devoted wife survives him. As an only child, a little boy, died a good many years ago. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, Rev. W.E. Lockler being in charge. Mr. Carlisle had long been a member of the Baptist church. ---- MRS. D.M. JOINER PASSES ON TO THE GREAT BEYOND A death which brought universal sadness and cast a pall of gloom over this entire section was that of Mrs. D.M. Joiner which occurred early last Friday morning at their home in Montgomery. The news of her death came as a great shock. Mrs. Joiner had been ill only a few days and although she had the very best of attention from skilled physicians and nurses, she gradually grew weaker and passed away quietly early Friday morning. Mrs. Joiner, before her marriage to Bro. Joiner in 1909, was Minnie Shelnutt. She was born at Wedowee on Nov. 29, 1886. She was educated in the schools of Roanoke. Bro. and Mrs. Joiner moved to Lanett in 1917 where he was the pastor of the First Christian church of Lanett until 1925 when he accepted a call to the Central Christian church in Montgomery. Funeral services were held at the Lanett Church of Christ on Saturday morning at 10:30. Rev. S.P. Spiegel of West Point and Rev. O.P. Spiegel of Montgomery and Rev. M.G. Tarvin had charge of the services. The remains were interred in the Lanett cemetery by the side of little Dan Jr. who died several years ago. The West Point News, Dec. 15th ---- HAYWOOD News Dec. 19th This community was saddened when the news came Wednesday that Mrs. Ben Crenshaw was dead. She was a christian woman and will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves a husband, three sisters, three brothers and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her leaving. She was laid to rest at Haywood on Thursday. ---- ALMOND News Dec. 19th A birthday dinner was given at Mr. Vernon Wilson's on Sunday in honor of Mr. Mack Stewart and Mrs. Vernon WIlson who are twins. --- ROCK MILLS News Dec. 19th Mr. John Burgess of Sherman, Texas is visiting relatives here. --- Mr. Tom Owens and Miss Mattie Belle Peaden were married Saturday night. --- HOPEWELL News Dec. 19th "Grandma" Nelson had a stroke of paralysis a few days ago and is very feeble at the home of her son Mr. R.S. Nelson. --- BIG SPRINGS News Dec. 19th The marriage of Mr. Volley Hester and Miss Ruby Benefield on Friday night was quite a surprise to their many friends. We wish the young couple much happiness in life. --- LOCAL News Among those who were called to Roanoke by the death of Mr. Mack Carlisle are his sister Mrs. M.J.W. Young of Louisville, Kentucky; his brothers, Ernest Carlisle of Griffin and Charlie and Hoston Carlisle of Atlanta; a sister Mrs. Mittie Burpee and two of her daughters, Mrs. Dan Holt and Miss Leah Glenn Burpee of Montgomery; Dr. and Mrs. R.C. Haynes of Graham; W.A. Kitchens and famly of Ashland. ---- Mrs. John Hill and children of Chicago are the guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Heflin. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 28, 1927 A NUMBER OF DEATHS REPORTED THIS WEEK The pleasure of the holidays has been marred by a number of deaths of people known to many in this community. The following have been reported to the Leader office: Mr. Dixie Freeman died Monday night at his home in Atlanta. Interment will be in the family lot in Notasulga at one o'clock this afternoon. He formerly resided in Roanoke where he had many friends. His untimely end leaves Miss Berta Freeman, a sister of the deceased, as the only surviving member of the family. A number of friends from this place will attend the funeral. --- Mr. Robert James died in a hospital in Atlanta on Monday where he had been for several weeks, suffering from injuries received in a train wreck. He was a son of Mr. J.T. James of this city and the widow is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Cummings, also of Roanoke. Representatives of these families went to Manchester yesterday to attend the funeral of the unfortunate man. ---- I.W. Lewis received the sad news on Saturday night of the death of his brother Lon Lewis at Chandler's Springs, his death coming after a short illness. Mr. I.W. Lewis attended the funeral of his brother at Millerville on Sunday. The deceased was reared in Randnolph county and many friends will learn of his death with regret. --- At Johnson's Cross Roads on Monday night, Mrs. George Halsey died, at the age of 80 years. She is survived by her husband. Interment was at New Hope in Chambers county on Tuesday. --- WEDOWEE News Dec. 27th Mr. John W. Overton attended the funeral of his nephew T.E. Simpson at Bessemer on Sunday. Mr. Simpson was killed in a train wreck in that place last Friday. --- Mr. Wayne Mashburn and Miss Lois Washington were married last Sunday at the home of the bride's parents. --- OLD RANDOLPH COUNTY PRISONER GETS PAROLE In writing about the large numbers of state prisoners who were paroled on Christmas week for good past behavior, the Montgomery Advertiser said: " One of the men receiving a Christmas parole was Frank Adams of Randolph county, Ala., who is serving a life sentence and has not had a moment of freedom under the parole privilege since his conviction and sentencing in 1891.
