L.R. CHASE OCCURRED AT WEST POINT The death of Mrs. L.R. Chase of this place occurred yesterday near West Point where she had recently gone on a visit to relatives in an effort to regain her health which had been poor for quite a while. Her husband survives. The funeral and interment will be at Lane's Chapel at one o'clock this afternoon. --- AGED CITIZE OF WEDOWEE IS DEAD; Funeral of Mr. Ben H. Smith held Saturday Wedowee, Jan. 3rd Mr. Ben H. Smith died at his home here last Thursday night. He had been in feeble health for more than a year but had been confined to his room only a few days prior to his death. The deceased, fondly known as "Uncle Ben", was one of Wedowee's oldest and most beloved citizens. Funeral services were at one o'clock Saturday at the Wedowee Baptist church of which the deceased had long been a faithful member. In the absence of the pastor, Judge F.J. Ingram, the funeral was conducted by Rev. S.R. Towns and T.N. Crumpton, pastors of the two local Methodist churches. After the funeral rites at the church the Masons took charge of the body and concluded the services at the grave in the Masonic cemetery where interment took place. A widow and eight children survive him. The children living out of the county who attended the funeral are Mr. Larkin Smith of Cullman; Mr. Wyatt Smith of Jay, Florida; Mr. Jim Smith of Bowdon, Georgia; Mrs. J.N. Word of Milton, Florida; and Mrs. Jim Ayres of Tampa, Florida. ----- WEHADKEE News Jan. 2nd The little babe of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Moman died last Tuesday after a short illness and was buried at Big Springs on Wednesday. --- Mr. and Mrs. Searcy Veal of Atlanta visited kindred in our community on Christmas. --- MALONE News Jan. 2nd Mrs. Lila Ester and her son Cecil visited Mr. J.K. Wilkinson the past weekend. --- Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Camp were called to the bedside of their daughter Mrs. Dicie Windsor last Saturday night. She died Sunday morning. Mrs. Windsor leaves a husband, four children, her father and stepmother, four brothers and four sisters, many relatives and friends to mourn her death. --- Mr. Luther Camp and his son H.R. Camp from Birmingham visited relatives here last week. --- Mrs. J.K. Wilkinson is still in the hospital in Birmingham. --- ROCK SPRINGS News Jan. 2nd Mr. Leonard Bassett and Miss Mary Wyl Jeter of Roanoke were married last Monday night. --- LEVEL ROAD News Jan. 2nd This community was shocked on the 22nd by the death of Mr. W.R. Ritcherson. He had been in ill health for several months. He was a devoted member of the Baptist church. This community will miss him very much. He leaves a wife and several children and a host of friends to mourn his departure. He was buried at High Pine church. --- DEATH OF MRS. BREWER Mrs. Charlie Brewer died Dec. 27th at her home several miles north of town after an illness of one week. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at White's Chapel by Rev. S.R. Towns. Mrs. Brewer was 63 years of age and the mother of twelve children, all living, eight sons and four daughters. Nine grandchildren survive this good mother who has gone to her reward. --- CARD OF THANKS We take this method of expressing our appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the very dear friends of Roanoke for the many acts of kindness shown us during our great sorrow in the loss of our loved one. Houze and children ----- PITTMAN - STEPHENS A marriage of interest ot a large circle of friends was that of Miss Dora Pittman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N.E. Pittman to Lester L. Stephens on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 31st at the home of Mr. H.E. Hester on Handley avenue. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C.O. Pinkard. Immediatly after they left for a short visit to the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.E. Stephens. The bride for several years held a position with the Valley Mills where, by her kindly, helpful disposition, she has greatly endeared herself to her coworkers. The groom has a position with W.H. Pool. Mr. and Mrs. Stephens will make their home at Mr. Hester's on Handley Ave. --- MARRIAGE OCCURRED HERE MONDAY A new year social event that will prove of interest to the many friends of the worthy couple was the marriage in Roanoke Monday afternoon of Mr. Alwyn R. Prince to Miss Thelma Waid. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. R.M. Archibald. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Waid of this city and she and the groom are teachers together at Taylor's Cross Roads a few miles north of town. --- MARRIED IN LOUISVILLE DEC. 25th Miss Sue Stitt and Robert Sudduth were married on Sunday, Dec. 25th at the home of the bride's brother at Louisville, Ala. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Capers W. Stitt, using the ring ceremony. After Jan. 1st, they will be at home in Milltown where the groom is a vocational agricultural teacher. --- LOCAL News Mrs. L.D. Greenwood of Warm Springs, Georgia spent the weekend with her sister Mrs. W.R. Wilson. --- The Leader is informed that Angeline Ash, an old and well known colored woman who spent most of her life in Roanoke, died last week in Birmingham. --- Capt. E.P. Smith who as a chaplain in the famous Rainbow Division during the World War, was the guest last week of Mrs. Carter Wright and family, to whom he is related. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 11, 1928 SISTER OF MR. McDONALD DIED IN BESSEMER Rev. T.L. McDonald, pastor of the Roanoke Methodist church, received Friday evening the sad news of the death of his sister Mrs. Fred B. Buck at her home in Bessemer following a short illness. Mr. McDonald was too unwell to undertake to attend the funeral but Mrs. McDonald left Saturday morning and was present at the funeral and interment that afternoon, returning home Sunday evening. Mrs. Buck was one of the most active and devoted members of the First Methodist church in Bessemer and was beloved by a large circle of friends. --- STANDING ROCK News Jan. 9th Mrs. Smith of LaGrange, mother of Mrs. I.D. Holliday was buried at Standing Rock on Saturday. --- Mr. and Mrs. Leroy McCorkle of Florida spent the latter days of the year with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Dye. --- PINE HILL News Jan. 9th Two weddings occurred in this community during the holidays; Miss Effie Lipham and Mr. Albert Stewart of Gold Ridge and Miss Mattie Brooks and Mr. Curtis Johnson of Birmingham. --- UNION HILL News Jan. 9th This community was sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Bettie Kirby at Rock Stand. Her children and other relatives have our sympathy. --- ROCK STAND News Jan. 9th This community was greatly saddened last Saturday morning when the spirit of "Aunt" Betty Kirby, after a few days illness, took its flight to the celestial city. Interment took place at Rock Stand on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services were conducted by Revs. J.D. Dollar and R.S. Towns. The deceased was 87 years of age. For many years she was a faithful member of the Methodist church at White's Chapel but for convenience she moved her membership to the Christian church at Rock Stand, where she had also faithfully served almost since this church was established. Her life was one of beauty and service. She lived not for self alone but for others. She was loved by all who knew her. Even though she has passed from our view, her smiling face will never fade from our memories. Mrs. Kirby is survived by eleven children, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and by a large number of friends. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. Joe Rucker and baby girl arrived last Friday from Portsmouth, Virginia to remain several months with Mrs. Rucker's mother Mrs. Nettie Tennant. --- Three colored people died in Roanoke in the early hours on Saturday. They were Thomas J. Garrett, Fannie Mae Shearer and Irene Freeman. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 18, 1928 MR. McDONALD LOST ANOTHER SISTER ON SUNDAY Last week the Leader reported the death in Bessemer on Jan. 6th of Mrs. F.B. Buck, sister of Rev. Thad L. McDonald, local Methodist minister. Shortly after the morning service last Sunday, Mr. McDonald received the distressing news that another sister, Mrs. Samuel Letson of Johns in Jefferson county, had passed from earth to her final reward. She had contracted pneumonia while waiting on Mrs. Buck who died of the same disease. Mr. McDonald left at once to attend the funeral of his sister. In this double affliction, he has the profound sympathy of this people. --- WEDOWEE News Jan. 17th Mr. J.K. Tennant, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, enjoyed a birthday dinner given at the home of his daughter Mrs. C.B. Wright on last Tuesday, that date being the 81st anniversary of his birth. --- Mrs. E.M. Moore and her mother Mrs. Fincher were called to Atlanta last Friday to visit Mrs. Fincher's brother at that place who had suffered a stroke of paralysis. --- Mr. W.C. Wilburn was called to Selma last Saturday to attend the funeral of his father-in-law. --- Mr. John A. Wright left for Akron, Ohio on Saturday, where he has accepted a position. --- LOCAL News Walter Gauntt died last Thursday night in LaGrange. His remains were carried Saturday to his former home at Ophelia and interred. He was a brother of the late Dr. T.G. Gauntt. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 25, 1928 WADLEY News Jan. 23rd Two brothers, Herman Drake and Will Drake, met at a party Saturday night and renewed an old feud over a saw mill affair, and Herman shot his brother Will, the bullet entering the stomach and lodging in the back. Mr. Drake was rushed to the hospital where he is resting fairly well at this writing. These are young white men of a prominent family about three miles south of Wadley. ---- Early Sunday morning, Mr. A.C. "Red" Jenkins and Miss Lemerle Weldon motored to Wedowee, accompanied by Miss Weldon's sister Mrs. W.L. Elmore, where they were married by Judge Moore. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins left Wedowee for a trip of two weeks in Mississippi, after which they will make their home in Birmingham. --- Mrs. Weldon Spencer of Birmingham is here to accompany her mother Mrs. Ella Thompson back to a hospital in Birmingham for further treatment. --- Mrs. W.L. Elmore and little son of Savannah, Georgia are the guests of her mother Mrs. A.L. Weldon. --- MOUNT CARMEL News Jan. 23rd Mrs. W.N. Coleman received the sad news on last Tuesday of the death of her father Mr. Knight of Tallapoosa, Georgia. --- MALONE News Jan. 23rd The people of this place are sorry to learn of the death of "Aunt" Merica Wilkinson. Services will be at this place today. Aunt Merica was a good christian woman. She died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mack Moncus near Almond on Sunday. --- SPRINGFIELD News Jan. 23rd Mr. Tyson Strain of New Hope is visiting his sister Mrs. Raymon Norred. --- ALMOND News Jan. 23rd Mrs. E.M. Moncus's mother Mrs. Wilkinson died Sunday morning. --- IRON MARKERS FOR CONFEDERATE VETERANS Gen. B.F. Weathers, commanded of the local camp of Confederate Veterans, is interesting in having all the graves of Confederate veterans who are buried in the Roanoke cemetery, marked by iron posts prepared for this purpose, containing the Confederate battle flag on one side and on the other side the lettering "C.S.A. 1861 - 1865". The marker is 30 x 15 inches and the cost is $2. each. The general has one at the grave of his brother Dr. William Weathers. He hopes that the public will cooperate in having every veterans' grave thus marked permanently and states that he will subscribe $25. towards this worthy objective. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. L.E. Warlick and little daughter Mary Louise of Birmingham are spending a few weeks with the former's mother Mrs. Mary Nelson. --- CARD OF THANKS We take this method of expressing our thanks to our neighbors and friends of Roanoke and especially to our doctors for the kindness and service rendered us during the illness of our son and brother.
