The scene was between the residence of C.H. Allen and the John W. Wood place, just south of Horton's Falls. The facts as accurately as we can gather them are as follows: Ray Presnal was driving his Dodge roadster and had left White's Chapel a short while before the accident, there being crowded in the car with him Carey Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Brack Taylor, Charlie Will Brumbeloe, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Brumbeloe, Joe Tom Kirby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe W. Kirby, and Hubert Kirby, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Kirby. Witnesses say that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it reached the scene of the disaster. Apparently there was some scramble over controlling the car which was seen to wobble and then suddenly left the roadbed, turning over several times, it is thought, landing on its wheels, practically a wreck. Joe Tom Kirby was killed instantly. Hubert Kirby died at 9 o'clock Sunday night without regaining consciousness. Ray Presnal was so seriously injured as to make his recovery a matter of doubt, though at this writing it is throught he has a chance to recover. Carey Taylor was badly bruised and C.W. Brumbeloe was slightly hurt. Doctors and an ambulance were rushed to the scene and the dead and injured brought to Roanoke, the latter to the hospital and the former to the undertaking establishment. Every effort was put forth by those in touch with the situation for the care of the victims of the shocking tragedy and for the comfort of those who were distressed by the pall of the disaster. At three o'clock Monday afternoon, joint funeral services were held in memory of the Messrs. Kirby at Zion's Rest, three miles north of Roanoke, conducted by Rev. J.D. Dollar in the presence of a large company of sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains of Joe Tom Kirby were interred at that place, while the body of Hubert Kirby was brought to the cemetery in Roanoke and laid to rest. Joe Tom Kirby was eighteen years and three months of age, while Hubert Kirby was twenty-one years and nine months old. The other three young men were around the age of twenty. None was married. A second accident occurred on the same highway at the north end of the bridge across High Pine Creek at about 4:30 in the afternoon. A car had stopped on the side of the road on account of a tire puncture. Two Ford cars coming up in opposite directions undertook to go around the parked car and ran into each other. One car, it was stated, was driven by Mr. Will Roberts and the other by Mr. Ed Cottle. In the car with the latter was Mr. Comer Cottle, some ladies and children. Mr. and Mrs. Comer Cottle and Miss Lemerle Broach received bruises by the impact of the cars, both of which were considerably damaged. A third accident occurred after dark a little further up the road, near the residence of Mr. Blake Wood, when a car collided with a buggy used by Mr. Emmett Carroll, the buggy being badly damaged. Still another accident in which Roanoke people figured occurred early Sunday morning down near Columbus when a car driven by Mr. Pierce Smith skidded down a railroad track and struck a post. In the car were Messrs. J.B. Bailey and R.E. Foster of Rock Mills, Messrs. Ernest Hood and Hurley Brown of Roanoke. Mr. Brown had two or three ribs broken. ---- TWO RECENT AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS REPORTED AT WADLEY Wadley, June 18th Much is being heard of automobile wrecks and we are sorry to report that Wadley is not escaping. Last Saturday, about 8:30 p.m. a car driven by a Mr. Pinkard of Milltown ran into a buggy driven by a negro and his wife. It is said this was caused by the lack of lights. The buggy was torn up and the negro woman badly hurt. On Sunday afternoon about sundown, two cars ran together at the curve at the cemetery. One was driven by Prof. Long, his wife being with him; the other by Will Walker, a negro, with his wife. Both cars were torn up and both negroes badly hurt. Mrs. Long sustained some bruises and Mr. Long slightly hurt.
