Taylor, on the northern outskirts of town, a fine, large feast was spread at noon, with nothing left undone to supply the wants of the physicial appetite. In clear view were to be seen some fine crops, which demonstrated that Mr. Pike is still an active farmer. Lane, county tax collector, which occurred suddenly at the home of his son, Mr. Walter Lane, in Roanoke about 2:30 last Wedneday afternoon, Aug. 15th. While the son and his family were away on a visit the father and mother had come here from their home in Wedowee to spend the time in the former's home. Mr. Lane had gone out to repair a fence on the back premises and was soon afterward found dead. He was 67 years of age and while his health had apparently been better in late months, it is stated that he was afflicted with high blood pressure, producing an attack of heart failure. The body of this popular official and beloved citizen rested in the home of the son in this city until Friday at 11 o'clock when it was borne to the First Methodist church, where services were conducted in the presence of a large congregation that filled the large auditorium. There were present all of the officials of Randolph county, many representative citizens of Wedowee and other communities. The altar place was filled with beautiful floral designs. In charge of the service was the pastor of the deceased, Rev. S.R. Towns, of Wedowee. Other ministers taking part were Revs. R.M. Archibald and T.L. McDonald of Roanoke, J.P. West of Standing Rock and W.T. Holdridge of Leeds. Rev. M.W. McCain of Shamutt was also seated on the platform. Sincere and impressive tributes were spoken in memory of the deceased by Mr. Towns and Mr. Holdridge. Soft, sweet music lent a pathos to the solemn occasion. The remains were then escorted by a concourse of relatives and friends to the old family church, Lane's Chapel, where all that was mortal of the beloved father, husband, brother and friend was committed to its long and silent rest. With the end of such a life as that of W.T. Lane, there went out from among us a rarely genial, happy spirit, whose presence shed sunshine on the pathway of others, whose heart beat in sympathy with those about him, and whose purpose in life was to serve well his day and generation. That his love was reciprocated and that his labors had ripened into rich fruition, was fully attested by the many evidences of respect and esteem to be seen on every hand. In addition to the wide circle of friends and acquaintances which Mr. Lane had made in his private and public life, there are left to mourn his departure a devoted wife, eight sons and two daughters, four brothers and two sisters, and a large number of more distant relatives. In the hearts of these the memory of his good deeds and loving devotions will rise like incense with every morning light and make fresh and fragrant the pathway of their lives through all the changing years. ---- DEATH OF MRS.
