SHEARER The Leader has received late the news of the death of Mr. Robert Shearer, aged 32, born in this county, who died in LaGrange on Aug. 17th of a heart attack. He was a World War veteran. His remains were brought back to this county and interred at Pleasant Grove. Many relatives and friends mourn the untimely end of this well known young man. ---- SPRINGFIELD News Sept. 3rd Mrs. Minnie Lewis and children of Newnan are spending some time with her father Mr. James Pogue. --- NEW HOPE News Sept. 3rd Mr. Lum Huey and Miss Nellie Moore drove to the residence of Fred Kitchens on Sunday morning and were happily married. Mr. Huey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Huey of this community. Miss Moore is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Moore of Liberty Grove. --- BROUGHTON News Sept. 3rd Mrs. N.C. Brumbeloe of Rock Stand spent last week here with her granddaughter Mrs. Emory Clark. --- ROCK SPRINGS News Sept. 4th Mr. Chink Dobson and Miss Pearl Bassett were happily married last Saturday afternoon. --- LOCAL News Little James Edward Harris arrived at the Knight Sanitorium on Sept. 1st to rejoice the hearts of his proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Harris of this city. --- William Buckalew is at home for a few days from the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. He has recently been on a cruise to Cuba. --- Rev. Homer Willoughby was a caller at the Leader office yesterday. The Tebow Heirs ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 12, 1928 DEPUTY IS SHOT RAIDING A STILL; Frank Satterwhite Seriously Wounded on Saturday Wedowee, Sept. 11th While assisting Sheriff Payne in raiding a still last Saturday on a creek west of Radney's Chapel, Mr. Frank Satterwhite of Roanoke was shot through both legs by a negro, Cliff Grimmett, and seriously injured. Sheriff Payne had been notified that a still was in operation near Radney's Chapel and he, together with Deputies Satterwhite, Wilson and Perry, went to make a capture. Just before reaching the place where they had been told the still was located, the sheriff and his deputies separated and approached the place from different directions, attempting to reach the place undetected. Deputy Satterwhite reached the still first, but before he could make a capture he was seen by the two negroes there, Arthur Patillo and Cliff Grimmett. Grimmett immediately opened fire, shooting Mr. Satterwhite twice. Upon hearing the shots, the sheriff and his deputies rushed to the scene but both negroes had made their escape. Satterwhite was rushed to the hospital where he is receiving treatment. One hip was fractured, the other leg received only a flesh wound. The latest news from the hospital is that Mr. Satterwhite is resting well. Arthur Patillo came to Wedowee Monday and surrendered to the sheriff. He was released under a $500. bond. Grimmett has not been found. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. W.B. Pittman arrived last week from Leosho, Missouri to spend a few weeks with relatives. --- Mrs. M.T. Smallwood and children left Monday by automobile to join Mr. Smallwood at Amarillo, Texas where they expect to make their home. --- Mrs. E.G. Bond of McMinnville, Tenn., is spending a few days with her daughter Mrs. Trent Howell. --- Mrs. Julia Phillips and children moved Monday to Birmingham, to the regret of their friends here. --- Mrs. Mollie Gay and Master James Gay Evans are at home again after being away for more than three months. James was with his mother in Birmingham while Mrs. Gay has had an extensive western tour, visiting her sisters and friends in Texas and a daughter in California. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 19, 1928 CORINTH News Sept. 17th Mrs. W.E. Hester and Mrs. T.W. Steward visited their uncle Mr. Monk Hunter yesterday at Auslin CHapel. He is quite sick. --- WADLEY News Sept. 17th Mr. Arthur Yarbrough of Dallas, Texas has been visiting relatives and friends here the past two weeks. Mr. Yarbrough moved from this section 33 years ago and this is his second visit back, the last visit being 25 years ago. --- Mrs. Dorie Johnson, mother of Mrs. W.T. Meacham, died at the home of Mrs. Meacham yesterday afternoon. She had been an invalid for several months and had been, with her husband, spending several weeks here. The body will be carried to Atlanta, their home, tomorrow for burial. --- LOCAL News Charles B. Adcock, wife and babe arrived Saturday from Lake Wales, Florida to spend a week with relatives in this county. --- Mrs. J.H. Blount and son Jimmie of Columbus, Georgia are spending a while with her mother Mrs. Louie White. --- Scott Satterwhite arrived last week from Brownsville, Texas, being called here by the serious wounding of his brother Frank Satterwhite. --- Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Pace of Hogansville were in Roanoke on Saturday and Sunday, visiting Mrs. Pace's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Hester and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Pace are moving this week to Gastonia, N.C. where Mr. Pace has a position which is a promotion from the one he has at Hogansville. ---- HAYWOOD News Sept. 17th Mrs. Warner Hurley is ill with typhoid fever. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 26, 1928 MRS. H.R. DEBLEY DIED IN WASHINGTON CITY ON MONDAY Mrs. Evelyn Greene received the distressing news yesterday that her sister Mrs. Howard R. Debley had died Monday night at her home in Washington city. Her health had not been good for some time. The deceased was formerly a resident of this place and was a visitor here the past summer. Many friends regret her untimely death and sympathize with Mrs. Greene in her sore bereavement. The interment will occur in Opelika, probably Thursday. --- WADLEY News Sept. 24th Mrs. George Evans Sr. and her family attended the 87th birthday of her mother Mrs. Vickers at Gibsonville on Sunday. This was the first time she had been able to have her 8 children all together in 40 years. There are five generations in this family, eight living children, 67 grandchildren, 168 great- grandchildren, 13 great- great grandchildren, all present. ---- HERREN'S GROVE News Sept. 24th Mr. M.B. Traylor, Mrs. S.W. Herren and little Misses Jewell and Curtis Herren spent last Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Will Hinton and Vida Hinton at Woodland. Mrs. William Hinton is the granddaughter of Mr. M.B. Traylor. On Saturday, the latter's birthday was celebrated. He was seventy-two years old. A delightful dinner was served. ---- MRS. ELIZABETH STANFORD DIED Death came to one of the county's oldest and most respected mothers on Monday morning when Mrs. Elizabeth Stanford was taken from her earthly home. Her husband had long preceded her. She left seven children and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren to mourn her going. The funeral was at Lineville Baptist church conducted by Revs. Wood and Bynum. Burial was in the Lineville cemetery. The Lineville Headlight, Sept. 20th. Mrs. Stanford was reared just south of Roanoke. Mrs. C.H. Cole and Mrs. Sarah Goodwin of Roanoke are sisters of this good woman. ----- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Al Hammond and the latter's mother Mrs. Kinard of Columbia, S.C. are spending the week here with Mrs. Cauthen. Mrs. Kinard is a sister of the late H.H. Cauthen. --- Mrs. M.B. Long of Tuscaloosa is visiting her sister Mrs. F.W. Beall for a few days. --- A son, Leonard Bruce was born Sept. 23rd to Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Bates at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Sudduth near town. --- The home of Mr. and Mrs. Yancy Chewning was blessed Monday morning by the arrival of a winsome daughter who was given the name Sarah Gene in honor of her two grandmothers. --- WEHADKEE News Sept. 24th We are sorry to note that Mrs. W.S. Brown is very ill. --- CENTER POINT News Mr. Louie Bozeman returned to his home in LaGrange last week after spending several months with Mr. and Mrs. Huey Bozeman. --- DEATH OF FORMER ROANOKE LADY IN LAGRANGE Mrs. W.N. Gladney, a venerable and beloved woman of LaGrange, died at her home on Hogansville road Wedneday afternoon, Sept. 19th at four o'clock. Mrs. Gladney was seventy-eight years of age at the time of her death. She leaves many friends who mourn her passing for she was a friend to all. She was cheerful and ready to speak a kind word to all who visited her. Funeral services were held from the residence Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. A.D. Echols, pastor of the Unity Methodist church, assisted by Rev. W.P. Cofield, pastor of the Southwest LaGrange Baptist church, officiated. Interment took place in the Hillview Annex. Mrs. Gladney is survived by three daughters, Mrs. E.C. Arnett, Mrs. J.W. Awbrey and Mrs. J.K. Bennett, all of LaGrange; three sons, Mr. R.D. Gladney of Tifton, Mr. J.F. Gladney of LaGrange and Mr. G.C. Gladney of Washington, D.C.; also several grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The LaGrange Graphic ---- $100 REWARD OFFERED BY GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA FOR CAPTURE AND CONVICTION OF CLIFF GRIMMETT A $100. reward is being offered by the Governor of Alabama for the capture and conviction of Cliff Grimmett, a negro charged with distilling and assault with intent to murder, in Randolph County on Sept. 8, 1928. A description of Cliff Grimmett follows: Height: About five feet and three inches Weight: About 160 or 170 pounds Color: Black Has full or round face, wears No. 9 or 10 shoes. Age about 27 or 28 years. Goes well dressed in Sunday clothes, plainly dressed in week day clothes, usually wears a cap. Full set of good front teeth. Communicate with G.B. Payne, Sheriff of Randolph County, in Wedowee, Ala., if whereabouts known. ----- LOCAL News Willie Lee, son of Lon Higgins, a well known colored citizen, was kicked by a mule on Tuesday morning and killed almost instantly. The tragedy occurred while the lad was working with the mule belonging to W.S. Kirk & Co. --- WEDOWEE News Sept. 25th --- Many from Wedowee attended the funeral of Mr. Andrew J. Kent, which was held at Mt. Pleasant church, three miles west of Wedowee on Tuesday, Sept. 25th at 11 o'clock. While riding with his wife along the road near Malone on Sunday afternoon, he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never regained consciousness, his death occurring Monday evening about six o'clock. Mr. Kent was for many years closely associated with public affairs in Randolph county, having served as deputy sheriff under the late R.H. Harris and was elected sheriff in 1900. He was the only sheriff who ever served six years in succession in Randolph county. His term of office was extended in 1901 when the Constitution was adopted which provided for the extension of the term of office of sheriffs for the state. Mr. Kent is survived by his widow and the following children: Mr. A.L. Kent of Wedowee Mrs. R.M. Swann of Wedowee Mrs. Owen Ford of Roanoke Mr. W.O.
