RADNEY DIED FRIDAY LAST; FUNERAL ON SUNDAY At eight o'clock Friday evening, December 7, 1928, came to a close the earthly life of one of Roanoke's most prominent, useful and beloved citizen in the person of Mr. James P. Radney. He had been in declining health since suffering a serious attack in mid-summer. Though he rallied and for a time showed marked improvement, the nature of his illness was such that ultimate recovery was believed to be improbable. But through the long weeks and months of his affliction Mr. Radney was brave, patient and cheerful and realized his condition fully. He was given the closest and best attention thrugh his long illness by family, physicians and friends and often expressed his appreciation of these services. As a testimony of the esteem in which he was held, the hour of his funeral, two o'clock Sunday afternoon, brought together one of the largest congregations ever seen in the First Methodist church of Roanoke. The audience overflowed the auditorium into the Sunday school annex, while a number of colored people found accomodations in the gallery. This was a representative assembly, there being people present from various parts of the county and from more distant points. Members of the board of stewards of the Methodist church, the county and city boards of education of which the deceased was a member, acted as honorary pall bearers. An abundance of bright autumn flowers filled the altar place and added their eloquent though silent testimony to the love of so many for the one who had gone to the Land of Eternal Spring. Two favorite songs were sung by the choir. The comforting words of the Scripture were read, the lesson from the Old Testament by Rev. C.W. Northcutt of Montgomery, superintendant of the Masonic Orphan's Home of Alabama, of which Mr. Radney was a trustee, while the lesson from the New Testament was read by the pastor of the church, Rev. H.H. Ellis. Rev. W.E. Lockler, pastor of the First Baptist church offered a fervant prayer. Rev. T.L. McDonald, presiding elder of the Roanoke district, in well chosen words, voiced an appreciation of the life and character, the loyalty and labors of the useful citizen who had passed to his reward. A large concourse wended its way to the cemetery, where was laid to rest the mortal remains of him who had given three score years of faithful service in the various relations that had been his. Mr. Radney was born and reared near Pleasant Hill, this county, and had been a resident of Roanoke since early manhood. He was engaged in business the greater part of this time, yet he never became so absorbed in his own interests as to neglect his duties to others. He gave largely of his time and talents and that without recompense, to his friends, his church, his town, his county, his state. For about thirty years he was a member of the board of stewards of the Roanoke Methodist church, much of this time serving as secretary and treasurer. At one time he was a member of the city council. At the time of his death and for a number of years thereto he was president of both the county and city school boards. In these positions he rendered a valuable service. He has entered upon a well earned rest. His place cannot be adequately filled. Mr. Radney is mourned and missed by a wife, a son Mr. J.P. Radney Jr., a daughter Miss Lucile Radney, four brothers, Messrs. Hiram B. Radney and Cass M. Radney of Roanoke and Messrs. W. Larkin Radney and Thomas H. Radney of Alexander City and many relatives and friends. ----- DEATH OF MR.
