AL) Dadeville, Ala., May 24th Mrs. S.C. Oliver died at her home last Friday evening after an illness of several months. She leaves a husband and eight children to mourn her death. The children are: E.M. Oliver of Lafayette, Ala Jas. W. Oliver of Wedowee, Ala Mrs. D.L. White of Jackson's Gap Mrs. J.K. Pearson of Dadeville J. Percy Oliver of Dadeville Mrs. W.F. Leach of Dadeville Miss Jannie Oliver of Dadeville S.H. Oliver of Dadeville; all of whom were at her bedside when the end came. Mrs. Oliver had just passed her sixty-second birthday at the time of her death and had been a member of the Methodist church from early womanhood. Her life was that of a consistent christian and one of devotion to her husband and children, and in her death they have sustained a loss which they alone can feel. ___ ROCK MILLS News Messrs. Em Crouch, Albert Gross and Quint Adams were shot by some unknown party here Saturday night while returning from Roanoke. Mr Gross was very seriously wounded while the others received slight injuries. __ Messrs. A.F. Baker and J.A. Kinney of Temple, Ga are visiting relatives in this place. __ A daughter of Mr. William Wood died near this place last Friday evening. __ PEAVY News Mr. B. Caldwell is right sick at this writing. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Ussery the venerable mother of W.F. Ussery is spending this week with her son. __ Mrs. John Cassels of Georgia is spending this week with the family of her brother Dr. Floyd. __ Mr. Buford Sharpe and daughter Miss Leila of Carrollton, Ga visited relatives on Roanoke Saturday and Sunday. __ The little child of Mr. Jim Awbrey, brother of our townsman A.M. Awbrey, died at the former's home at Texas, Georgia last Thursday. __ Capt. B.F. Ponder and two little granddaughters came up from Opelika to spend several days with the family of A.J. Brummit. __ Mr. Robt. Wilson and Miss McCullough of Clay countt spent Sunday night in this city, returning from Franklin, Georgia where they had gone to get married and met with success. __ Mrs. Owensby and Misses Willie and Lee Ridley of Wood's Mill, Ga spent part of last week in Roanoke, returning from LaFayette where they attended commencement. ___ Mr. Wesley DeVaughan, a prominent citizen of Beat 7, had a stroke of paralysis last week from which he died Monday night. He was a leading democrat in the western part of this county. __ Mr. H.F. Owen of Albertville, formerly of Louina, has formed a partnership with Mr. W.A. Dean in the blacksmith business and has moved his family here. We wish the new firm success. __ Mr. Larcus Barefield, a young man who has been at Opelika for some time under treatment for cancer, was brought through Roanoke Saturday enrouge to his home in Clay county. It is not thought that he can recover. __ Marshall Striplin went to West Point on Sunday and returned with Jack Chappell, who shot and painfully wounded Edgar Taylor at Rock Mills some months ago. Young Chappell was taken to Wedowee to be held on a charge of assault with intent to murder. __ A slight earthquake shock visited the eastern part of the United States about 1 o'clock Monday. It was felt by several citizens of Roanoke. __ Miss Ella Watt went down to Phenix City last Saturday to vsiit her sister Mrs. A.S. Smith. In about two weeks she will go to New York where she will remain two months in the study of elocution. __ Miss Ella Burdette returned last Saturday from a delightful visit to Dadeville and LaFayette. She was accompanied home by Miss Lula Hicks of Dadeville and Miss Percie Grady of LaFayette. The Leader wishes these young ladies a most pleasant stay in Roanoke. __ Mr. C.N. Shearer left Monday afternoon for Anniston where his marriage to Miss Dobbins occurs today. __ Invitations have been received by friends in this city of the marriage of Miss Etta Cleveland to Rev. F.J. Dodd at the former's home at Asbury, Ga on June 9th. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 9, 1897 WELSH Community News Mrs. Hannah Estes has returned from a pleasant visit to LaFayette. __ Rev. John Cliett is visiting his daughter Mrs. Cook at this writing. __ Mr. J.S. Mitcham is seriously ill. The chances are against his recovery. __ WEHADKEE News Mr. Sam Arnett of Texas, Georgia was here Sunday evening to see his best girl. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Troy Kitchens of Double Head has been quite sick for some time for was better at last report. __ Little Henry Manley is still quite ill with inflammatory rheumatism. We trust he will soon recover. __ Mr. Curry Shaffer, an old Roanoke boy, now of Dadeville is spending some days here with relatives and friends. __ Mrs. G.H. Mathis and three children of Anniston are spending a couple of week with their relatives the Stevensons at this place. __ Mr. S.M. Burditt of Double Head was up to day and left an order for the Leader. __ Mr. G.C. Freeman and four children arrived from Tuskegee on Monday evening and have moved into the house recently occupied for Mr. G.P. McMurray. __ Messr. Jno. A. Myatt of Brookwood and A.M. Myatt of Birmingham are here visiting their sister Mrs. E.B. Norton. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, June 16, 1897 JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Mrs. Elizabeth Brown is suffering from a trouble which Dr. Floyd pronounces of a cancerous nature. The enlargement is near the armpit and is half as big as a person's head. It is probable that she will never recover. __ Jesse Osborn who has been ill with an attack of typhoid fever has almost recovered. Dr. Disharoom treated the case. __ LOCAL News Capt. B.F. Weathers and daughter Miss Effie will leave in the morning for Nashville to take in the Centennial and the Confederate Veterans Reunion. __ Mr. M.W. Howard and family of Columbus, Ga have been visiting the family of Mr. W.W. Campbell for several days past. __ Mr. S.W. Gillerstedt, wife and two children are visiting the family of Mr. M.W. Carlisle. Mrs. Gillerstedt is a relative of Mrs. Carlisle. __ Mr. H.G. Ruggles went over to Harrisonville, Ga on Sunday, returning with his wife's niece, Miss Lizzie King, an attractive young lady of Atlanta, Ga who will visit here several days. __ Mr. J.A. Walden and wife Col. R. G. Rowland and wife and Miss Emma Hardy are out on a fishing expedition this week, striking the Chattahoochee at a point several miles below where the rest of the Roanoke crowd are quartered. __ Mr. J.T. Talley came in from Atlanta Sunday afternoon. We are indeed glad to note that Mrs. Talley, who has been in quite a precarious condition for some time, is much improved and bids fair to be well soon. This will be glad news to the friends of this excellent lady. __ A GOOD WOMAN DIES Last Thursday the sad intelligence reached Roanoke that Mrs. M. E. Driver, mother of our clever townsman Mr. B.O. Driver, had passed from earth to mansions of eternal rest. Mrs. Driver was known to many in Roanoke having visited here frequently, and won many friends by her lovely christian character. She had been a life long member of the Baptist church, and falling asleep in the church militant she awoke to newness of life and endless joys in the great church triumphant beyond the silent stars. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. Hornady and Bledsoe and the body was laid to rest to await the dawn of a brighter day. With a fellow feeling of kindred sorrow we extend sincere sympathy in the sad hour of bereavement. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, June 23, 1897 JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Henry Brown's house caught fire a few days since but the flames were extinguished before much damage was done. The fire caught in the roof from a stove pipe. __ F.M. Burditt has the finest cotton crop we have seen. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jim Brown's little child was very sick during the early part of the week. Dr. Hilt of Five Points pronounced the case hopeless. __ About one year ago Thomas Smallwood suffered several weeks from a severe attack of fever. His general health is good now but the fever settled in one of his legs and it is feared he will require a surgical operation to remove the trouble. __ WELSH News Prof. J.D. Lane, co-princial of the Waverly Male and Female Institute, passed through our village enroute to see his mother at Bacon Level a few days since. __ LOCAL News Mrs. W.T. Harris and child have been quite sick. __ Mrs. W.Y. Norman, nee Miss Danielly, formerly of this county but late of Killeen, Texas, died at her home last week. __ Mr. H.G. Ruggles went up to the Centennial on Monday. He will visit his mother at Shelbyville, Tennessee before he returns. __ Messrs. J.H. McDonough and D. McConnaghy left Monday to attend the Confederate Reunion and the exposition at Nashville. __ Mr. F.O. Watkins of Newnan, Ga visited his cousin L.R. Bailey several days recently. __ Rev. W.P. Cofield has been elected principal of the school at Fredonia, Ga which begins the first Monday in August. This will necessitate the loss to Roanoke of an excellent citizen. __ We are requested by Mr. J.M. Ballard to announce that there will be a picnic at Omaha on Saturday the 3rd day of July and that the young men are requested to bring their baskets of dinner instead of bottles and pistols. __ The Leader regrets the serious condition of Henry, the little son of H.C. Manley, who has been sick so long with imflammatory rheumatism. Monday it was found necessary to ampute his right leg at the thigh and the little fellow is now doing as well as could be expected. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, June 30, 1897 WEHADKEE News Mr. H. Hester and daughter of Potash, visited the former's father near this place Sunday. __ Mr. W.A. Seeger and wife of Rock Mills, visited the former's parents at his place on Sunday. __ Mr. R.L. Hester has been confined to his room several days with fever. __ Uncle Tapley Hester was thrown from a horse a few days ago and was seriously hurt but is convalescing. __ PEAVY News Several from this community attended the burial of old Grandma Osborn at High Pine yesterday. The funeral was conducted by Rev.Mr. Briscoe. __ We were pained to hear of the death of old Grandpa Radney. We sympathize with the bereaved relatives and friends. __ We were also shocked to hear of the death of Mr. Bird Pate Sr. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Tilmon Burditt is somewhat indisposed from illness. __ Henry Abbott has been on the sick list for nearly two weeks. His neighbors were generous enough to plow his cotton for him. __ Last night, about twelve o'clock, Mrs. Cynthia Osborn departed this life. Her death was no surprise to her friends as she has been in failing health for several weeks. She was almost 93 years old. For a considerable length of time previous to her death her mind as well as her body was badly impaired with the infirmities of age. Over seventy years ago she became connected with the Missionary Baptist church and remained a member until her death. Her remains will be laid to rest at High Pine tomorrow. ___ WELSH News ROCK MILLS News Mr. Posey Bennett and family of LaGrange spent last week with Mr. Jos. R. Phillips. __ Miss Daisy Stallings of LaFayette is visiting relatives in our town. __ Little Alma, the son of our fellow townsman Mr. John Nichols, died Wednesday night. The little fellow had been quite sick for awhil and suffered untold agony. The family has our deepest sympathy in this sad bereavement. __ LOCAL News A.J. Brummitt is repairing his shelving and proposes to lay in a life on shoes. __ Mrs. Wylie Randle came down from Nashville alst week with the family of F.P. Randle whom she is visiting at Rock Mills for awhile. __ Mrs. J.R. Simms returned to Tuckersburg this week after a pleasant stay with her parents at this place. __ Mrs. J.D. Waters, an old resident of this place, now of State Line, Ga., called on us Monday and subscribed to the Leader. __ DEATH OF MR. G.G. PATE The above named gentleman, familiarly known as "Uncle Bird" Pate, departed this life last Friday night at his home near town, and was buried in the city cemetery Sunday morning. He had been in feeble health for some time. In his death, Randolph County loses one of its oldest and best known citizens. He numbered his friends by the score and his death will bring sadness to the hearts of many who have known him long. He leaves a wife and daughter. ___ DEATH'S SAD CONQUEST This community was shocked Monday afternoon by the announcement of the death of Mrs. George E. Lee at her home on Wedowee street. She was Miss Mittie Reed before her marriage some year and a half ago. Many relatives and friends of this estimable lady are left to mourn her untimely depature. Her devoted husband was prostrated by the shock and in his deep grief he has the profound sympathy of his numerous friends. The interment tookplace at Wehadkee burying grounds. __ AN OLD CITIZEN GONE At midnight last Thursday night Uncle Minus Radney, the venerable father of J.H., W.A. and T.J. Radney, passed from the trials of this life into the rest that remains to the children of god. Having lived an upright christian life his last end was peace. His long and exemplary life, much of which was spent in this county, stands forth as a monument to uprightness and christianity before his kindred and friends. Any comment upon such a life could but do injustice to the subject. While his death brings sorrow to many heart, yet it also gives the blessed assurance that the is free from suffering and his soul is at rest.
