Pepper begins his school at Truett next Monday. __ Mr. J.W. Seymour of Truett, who has been sick for some time, we are sorry to way, is no better. __ WEHADKEE News Mrs. Price of Franklin, Ga, has been spending several days here with her daughter Mrs. Hood at this place. __ The little girl of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Pearce, just a month old, died last Thursday night. We extend sympathy. __ The funeral of Rev. T.A. Camp and wife will be preached at Big Spring the third Sunday in this month by Rev. J.D.H. Robinson. __ WELSH News Misses Mattie Whitten and Lizzie Jordan went to Fredonia on Friday to visit Miss Exa Veasey. __ Mrs. R.S. Snuggs of Standing Rock spent the week hwere with her daughter Mrs. Ozley. __ The following invitation has been received here: Mrs. Etta Hudson invited you to be present at the marriage of her daugher Irene to Mr. Samuel C. Lovelace on Wednesday afternoon, July fourteenth, eighteen hundred and ninety seven at five o'clock, Baptist church, Long Cane, Georgia. ___ LOCAL News Mrs. Bens of Butler, Ga is on a visit to her sister Mrs. Emma Stewart. __ The mother of Mr. R.W. Thompson, a promiment citizen of Truett, died last Friday. __ Wyatt W. Wood was taken very ill Monday night and has been confined to his room since. __ Miss Lizzie Scroggins of Luthersville, Ga is the guest of her cousins the Misses Upshaw. __ Warren Harris, a nice young man from Antioch, Ga spent Sunday with relatives in Roanoke. __ Mrs. J.D. Ellis and four little children arrived from East Lake Monday to spend some time with the former's sister, Mrs. J.W. Radney. __ Charles Gable went up to Atlanta Monday to make a visit of two or three weeks with homefolks. __ Mr. Anderson Clements of Fredonia was in town yesterday with his fair bride, he having been married last Sunday to Miss Annie Fuller. Heaven's blessings attend them. __ Mr. J.E. Aiken died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Fireman Charles Aikens in this city. He came here sick a week or two ago and has grown gradually worse until death relieved him of his sufferings. His remains were taken to Opelika Monday for interment. We join other friends in extending sympathy. __ Monday a telegram was received here, announcing the sudden death of Mr. Clinton L. Randle, at his home in West Tennessee at the age of 65 years. He was a good christian man and a brother of Messrs. F.P. and A.G. Randle and Mrs. M.E. Toliver to whom we offer our earnest sympathy in their sad bereavement. __ Rev. C.B. Cole and family and his mother spent several days last week with the family of his uncle, Mr. J.A. Walden. He has been in very feeble health over on his work in Coosa County and was enroute to his old home at Brockville for a few days of much needed rest. __ Rev. J.S. Chadwick of the Fayetteville Circuit arrived in Roanoke on Monday to visit his sister Mrs. J.W. Radney. He will be pleasantly remembered here by many friends he made here some years ago. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 14, 1897 JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News (written by E.C. Cunningham) I am thirty nine today but I shall not remind Bet of this fact until tomorrow. __ My wife's mother, Mrs. G. Brown, is very low. Several days ago we thought the end had come but still she lingers. Probably before this appears in print she will have left us. A horrible cancer is slowly but surely doing the work of death. __ Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Clack and their two little daughters Lula and Eula are visiting relatives near Denver. __ PITTMAN News A beautiful wedding took place at the home of J.T. Pouge on July the 4th at 8 in the evening. Mr. C.O. White and Miss Nannie S. Pouge were united in wedlock, Rev. J.W. Tucker officiating. The bride is one of our most attractive young ladies. Clarence is an upright fellow and has many friends who congratulate him on winning the hand and heart of this fair maiden. ___ WELSH News Miss Ella Arnett and brother Sam of Texas, Georgia are visiting relatives here. __ Messrs. Cephas Jordan and Charlie Jones visited relatives at Glee, Georgia Saturday and Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Ward went to LaGrange on Saturday. Mrs. Ward will remain there this week with her mother. __ MOUNT OLIVE News Mrs. Ida May has been quite sick but glad to say she is improving. __ Mrs. Elizabeth Brown who is suffering from cancer we are sorry to say is no better. Her death will be no surprise. __ ROCK MILLS News Mr. James Hill died at the home of his father Mr. Theodore Hill of this place, last Friday morning. Mr. Hill was just entering manhood and was a member of the Methodist church. His death was a shock to the entire community and he leaves many friends to mourn his death. The remains were interred in the Wehadkee cemetery. ___ LOCAL News W.H. Blanks was in town several days since. __ Miss Rosa Askew is spending the summer with her mother Mrs. Robert Brown. She has been attending school at Newnan. __ Mrs. S.H. Striplin returned Sunday from a visit to her son Dr. John Striplin over the Georgia line. She brings the news that her son's father-in-law Mr. Sanford Hagins during a thunderstorm last Friday was knocked senseless by lightning and one of his horses was killed, while Dr. Striplin and a lad standing nearby were stunned. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 21, 1897 TRUETT News Mrs. H.D. Pearson is quite sick with fever. __ Chas. Cardwell and mother have been visiting in Roanoke this week. __ WEHADKEE News Col. M.T. Almon and wife of Texas, Georgia visited relatives here Sunday. __ Mr. W.P. Etheridge wife and daughter of Red Oak, Ga., visited relatives here Saturday and Sunday. __ LOCAL News Our friend J.R. Hammond called to see us on Saturday. __ Tom Pate Jr. boasts of a 13 pound boy that has taken up permanent board at his home recently. __ Mr. J.G. Taylor who has been spending some time with the family of his son-in- law W.H. Welch, has gone to Tallasee to spend several months. __ Prof. Wm. N. Harris with his two daughters and four grandchildren spent Monday night in this city with his cousin, Capt. Handley. They ahve been spending some days with relatives in this section, where Prof. Harris was raised. Pinckard, in South Alabama is now his home. __ The death of Mr. John W. Seymour, a prominent citizen of Truett, this county, occurred last Sunday morning at an early hour. He had been very low for some time and his death was not unexpected. He leaves many friends besides his relatives, to mourn his untimely death. __ Marshall Striplin went over to Clay county last week to visit his stepfather who is quite low. __ Will P. Hill, who has made Roanoke his home for about a year past, took his leave of Roanoke yesterday to try his fortune in the far west. He goes to New Mexico where he has a brother. This young gentleman has so conducted himself here as to win many friends who wish for him success and happiness and indulge the hope that he may yet return to Roanoke. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 28, 1897 JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News (written by E.C. Cunningham) J.H. Dunn was called from the plow to the school room last Thursday to fill the writer's place made vacant by the death of our wife's mother. __ H. Ridley who has been sick with fever is up again. __ Dr. Trent was called to see Mrs. Wm. Payne last week who was ill. We are glad to report she is improving. __ PEAVY News T.M. Reaves, Davis and Jim Keeble went to the river one day this week and caught about 50 pounds of fish. __ A wedding bell rang not far from here last night. Mr. Bassett and Miss Levonie Brown were the happy pair. __ Mrs. Arried George and her two little children returned home today near Level Roads after several days visit at her fathers. __ WELSH News Miss Hodrick of Kentucky was the guest of Mrs. and Mrs. Hodrick Stevens seeral days last week. __ Mr. Charlie Lane is on a trip to Tuskegee where he will remain several days. __ LOCAL News Today, Mr. B.G. Sanders is to be married to Miss Hattie Hurt in Marion. __ Mr. C.R. Peek's wife died yesterday at 5 o'clock at her home near town. The remains will be interred in the cemetery at Bethel. we sympathize with the bereaved. __ Mrs. F.P. Nichols and children are attending a family reunion at Cusseta. __ John Wyatt and his mother arrived in Roanoke yesterday on a visit. They lived here several years ago and have since been in Texas. __ Mr. Lumpkin Swint and Miss Gusta Cole, daughter of Mr. Coon Cole, were married last Sunday morning by Rev. E.B. Norton at the residence of J.M. Satterwhite. __ Mrs. J.A. Walden has been suffering intensely for some days past with a hand that became blood poisoned from a small cut on a finger. For awhile it was thought that her hand would have to be amputated but we hope to learn of her speedy recovery. __ John T. Carroll spent several days last week down in Lee county and adjoining counties. A few days before his brother Mr. J.R. Carroll had been beaten almost to death by a negro horse thief whom Mr. Carroll had under arrest and who then escaped. The negro was recaptured and then began a lively chase from a mob of angry friends of the wounded man who were determined to kill the outlaw. He was removed from place to place until the mob was finally eluded. The wounded man is slowly improving. __ Brother Norton is expecting his uncle, Rev. T.G. Slaughter to fill his pulpit for him next Sunday night. Dr. Slaughter is one of the oldest and most prominent members of the North Alabama Conference and we trust our people will avail themselves of the opportunity of hearing him.
