Pate spent last week with her sister Mrs. Burton in this place. __ P.H. Huckeba, a successful merchant of Ashland, paid us a call this morning. __ Mr. Cornelius Reid arrived yesterday and is sick at the home of his brother, threatened with typhoid fever. __ Mr. Walter Davis and little children came up from LaFayette last Thursday to visit the family of the former's brother B.O. Driver. __ Court is in session at LaFayette this week. The trial of the state vs. the Trammels for the murder of George Cumbee will be called about Friday. __ John Morris and Mrs. J.D. Liles went over to LaGrange last Thursday to attend a family gathering before the departure of Rev. J.L. Morris and wife for Texas. __ Guy Handley is the happy father of a little daughter, born on the 29th. __ Mr. D. Parker, a prominent citizen of Corn House, had his left arm broken in two places above the elbow yesterday while hauling fodder. __ Miss Mary Noel, an aunt of our townsman A.R. Noel, was drowned in a creek near her home at Almond last Sunday morning. No one was with her at the time and her body was not found until Sunday evening. __ A telegram was received yesterday by R.W. and B.F. Griffin announcing that their mother was very ill at her home in Texas. They left on this mornings train to go to her. They sympathies of the many friends of these young men go with them and we trust they may find their mother improving. __ Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Vinson, their sons, John and Will and daughter Miss Lena and Mrs. N.B. McPherson went to Opelika on Thursday in response to a telegram announcing the illness of the former's son, James H. Vinson. The latter died several hours before his relatives arrived. Our sympathies are with the bereaved in this sad affliction. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 8, 1897 OBITUARY OF JAMES H. VINSON "In the midst of life we are in death." Such was the case when Jas. H. Vinson departed this life on August 26th at Opelika. Mr. Vinson was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Vinson of this place and was born at Barnesville, Ga., May 5, 1865. His mother died when he was only 15 days old but he war raised under the guidance of a christian stepmother. He was not a member of any church but gave every evidence of a changed life. In June 1893 he married Miss Elza Suddeth at Opelika where he spent the last few years of his life. Mr. Vinson as a boy was liked by all who knew him and as a man everyone loved him, for he was kind to all, always ready to turn a helping hand. He moved to Carrollton, Ga., a few months ago and for five weeks before his death he was sick with fever. He was carried back to his home at Opelika and lived only a few minutes after he reached there. He leaves a wife and one child and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his loss. May god's richest blessing rest upon and comfort the loved ones. And may his young wife be comforted by the sweet assurance that god doeth all things well and theer will be a happy meeting in the far beyond, where no sad thoughts of parting will ever come is the sincere wish of a friend. J.P.J., Welsh, Ala., Sept 8, 1897. ___ LOCAL News Henry Wright, the negro who killed Elisha Berry some weeks ago has been out on the scout every since the grand jury found a true bill against him at its recent sitting. Saturday last, Detective Walden lodged him in the lock up and he was turne dover to the sheriff and carried to jail. __ Handley Mann has been sick with fever several days past. __ Our jovial friend E.P. Mickle wears a broader smile than usual now. His oldest son was born on the 2nd instant. __ We learn that Dr. E.T. Gauntt left several days ago for Texas where he has several brothers, sons and daughters. The doctor was one of Wedowee's long time citizens and his old friends here wish him well. __ A white man named John Pollard from the northern part of the county, fell from his wagon just as he was leaving town yesterday and fractured his skull and otherwise badly injured. Dr. Heflin, who attended him, considers him dangerously hurt. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 15, 1897 WELSH News J.J. Jordan of West Point came up and spent a few days last week with his parents. __ Mr. John Arnett of Texas, Georgia spent part of last week here. __ Mr. Will F. Burgess of Bosworth has moved to Welsh. We extend him a hearty welcome. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News John Dunn is the happy father of a new boy. __ Messrs. G.W. Clack and T.J. Roberts have a sweet job. They are running a syrup mill. __ LOCAL News A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joel Arnett last Thursday. __ Mrs. Thomas Russell near town is recovering from a dangerous illness. __ Mr. L.A. Green of South Carolina was in Roanoke the first of the week. He has purchased several hundred acres of land in this county and came here to look after it. __ Miss Annie Bass of West Point, who was here visiting her cousin Claude Awbrey, was called home Tuesday by a telegram announcing the death of her grandmother. __ Jim Horton, a young while man in the Corn House neighborhood, accidentally shot himself through the right hand with a shot gun last Saturday. Dr. Floyd attended him and was compelled to take off three fingers of the wounded hand. __ The trial of Lee Trammell in LaFayette last week for the murder of George Cumbee over a year ago resulted in acquittal verdict. __ Mr. P.G. Bailey, a popular young citizen of Haywood, was married to Miss Bernice Williams, an accomplished young school mistress, on Thursday, the 2nd inst. The young couple made a flying trip to Georgia to avoid any unpleasantness with the bride's parents. "All is well that ends well." Wedowee Toiler ___ This community was given a surprise last Friday morning upon learning that on the night preceeding Mr. George W. Bradley and Miss Katie Dudley had eloped to Georgia's friendly soil and were married. This is a very youthful couple, both being yet in their teens, but their friends hope their brightest anticipations of success may be fully realized. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 22, 1897 WELSH News Mrs. John Brady is quite sick at this writing. We hope she may soon recover. __ ROCK MILLS News We are sorry to learn that Col. W.J. Almon, one of our oldest and best citizens is going to sell out and move away. __ Mr. William Towler and Miss Ollie Burk eloped Saturday night to Georgia and were married. __ Mr. Erastus McLendon and Miss Genie O'Neal were happily married on Sunday. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News In our items last week we failed to mention the death of Mrs. F.M. White. SHe had been a consumptive for a long time. For ten years she had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church. She said she felt prepared to die. A husband and six children survive her. Her remains were laid to rest at Concord, near Louina. Rev. M.A. Key conducted the burial services. __ Uncle Frank Gay has been under a doctor's care for several days. The symptoms seem to point to paralysis, though it is hoped that his trouble will not be so serious. __ Mrs. David Greer has been confined to her room several days. It is thought that she has fever. __ Mrs. Eurethra Stevens of Milltown died last Saturday. She was about 70 years old. She has been a faithful member of New Hope Christian church for a great many years. She was the wife of Hon. J.H. Stevens who has been twice representative of Chambers county and who with five children and a great many grandchildren, are left to mourn her death. __ LOCAL News B.O. Driver and wife went over to West Point this morning to attend the funeral of their cousin Mrs. Briscoe which occurred in that city at 11 o'clock today. __ Mr. B.R. Wood, living a few miles above town, a brother of Wyatt W. Wood and T.B. Wood, had the misfortune to get his right hand caught in a syrup mill yesterday morning. The first three fingers of his hand were mashed off. We sympathize with him in his misfortune. __ Miss Minnie Bishop of Truett, was married last Sunday to a Mr. Winger of Crenshaw County. __ Miss Ida Ray is engaged in teaching a music class in the Higgins community. __ Mr. Walter Hart of LaFayette spent Sunday in the city. __ Mr. J.S. Wyatt and mother Mrs. Sallie Wyatt left yesterday for their home in Gainsville, Texas. Franklin is their old home and they are always heartily welcomed there. John is a hustling young man and we predict him much success in the distant west. Franklin News and Banner __ A son of Bud Wilson near Wedowee had his nose mashed flat by being kicked by a mule last Saturday. __ R.W. Griffin returned Friday from a visit to his sick mother at Gypsum, Texas. His many friends will be gald to learn that he left his mother improving. __ Mr. W.T. Huckeba, a well known citizen living near Wedowee, is another victim of the gin. He had his left hand caught in his gin last Saturday and one of his fingers was cut off. __ News has been received here that Mr. Louis Satterwhite, formerly of this place, was married last Sunday afternooon to Miss Annie Watts, in Columbus. Mr. Satterwhite has a good position in Columbus and his friends will be glad to learn of his good fortune. __ DEATH OF MRS. W.R. BRISCOE The following is taken from The Atlanta Constitution of yesterday. The news was a sad surprise to friends here. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Driver, left yesterday morning to attend the funeral. The sincere sympathy of this community goes out to the bereaved. "Mrs. W.R. Briscoe, age twenty-six years, died lat night at 10 o'clock at the residence of Mr. C.W. Winters, 61 North Forsyth Street; heart failure was the cause. She had been in this city only a short time having come here from Roanoke, Ala., for treatment. Mrs. Briscoe is survived by her husband and one achild, a boy of four years. Her remains will be taken to West Point this morning for interment. " ___ PROBATE COURT NOTICE State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court, Sept. 19, 1897 Estate of David R. Nixon, deceased This day came R.H. Harris, as administrator of the estate of David R. Nixon, deceased and filed his petition in writing and under oath to sell certain lands of said estate to pay debts of said estate. It is ordered that Monday the 8th of November 1897 be set to hear said petition at which time all parties interested may appear and contest the same if they see proper. A.J. Vinson's family. __ Mr. Nathan Hurst of River Bend has been visiting his parents here for a few days. __ ROCK MILLS News Married at the residence of Justice Oliver Moore near Glenn, Ga., Dr. W.H. McClendon and Miss Maud Turner. __ Mr. John Smith and Miss Minnie Swint were happly married here Sunday evening. __ Mrs. Ray, the aged mother-in-law of Mr. William Allison, is very low at this writing. __ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Liles went to West Point Sunday to spend a day or two with their daughter Mrs. J.T. Nelson. __ At the residence of Mr. A.J. Stephens, near Radney's Chapel, his daughter Miss Tinie was married to Mr. J.B. Duke of Clay county on last evening, Rev. J.W. Tucker officiating. __ Mr. John F. Fuller, a good citizen of Truett, met with a great misfortune last Monday. While all were away from home the house caught fire and was totally destroyed. Little insurance was carried. His neighbors and friends have come to his relief in a substantial manner. ___ Miss Hattie Pearson, daughter of Mr. H.D. Pearson of Double Head, happened to a very painful and peculiar accident last Saturday morning. She consigned some trash to the fireplace and then ignited it. It developed that a dynamite cap was in the trash and it exploded.
