This venerable lady has lived a life that can be pointed to with pride by those who knew and loved her. She reared a large family of sons and daughters who are honorable and useful citizens. Among the number at Capt. B.F. Weathers of this city and Probate Judge A.J. Weathers. The funeral services occurred at the Baptist church Friday morning, conducted by Rev. J.W. After long weeks of patient suffering the spirit of Mrs. H.L. Griffin, on Oct. 13th, was freed from its frail tenement of clay and ascended to the rest of The Saints On High. Only a few weeks ago her sons R.W. and B.F. Griffin of this city returned from a visit to her bedside in Gypsum, Texas, leaving her better. Last Wednesday a telegram came announcing her dying condition. Mr. R.W. Griffin left at once for the distant western town, going through Tennessee to avoid the quarantine. But the devoted son had received his mother's last goodbye. When he reached her this time her lips were sealed in death. He could only follow to the tomb all that was mortal of her whose love and prayers had been the joy and inspiration of his life. Nothing in this world can fill the place of mother in one's heart. The only source of consolation at such a time is the hope of a meeting again beyond the reign of the tyrant death. In the strength of this hope by the aid of their loved one's everliving prayers, we trust these sorrowing sons may come to meet their mother's waiting kiss at the gateway of their father's home. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 27, 1897 WELSH News We are sorry to learn that Mr. J.P. She comes prepared to do all kinds of dress making in latest styles. Miss Norton is a cousin of Rev. E.B. Norton. __ A feeling of intense excitement was created in Roanoke Monday night when it became known that Mrs. J.W. McDonnough, an estimable lady living in the eastern part of Roanoke, had escaped from her home after dark and was lost. Perhaps no less than a hundred men turned out with lanterns and scoured the fields for miles around. Having made threats of going to her brothers, a party went on that trail and about half past midnight she was found at the home of her brother, J.W. Jackson, 8 miles south of town, where she arrived about midnight. She suffered no serious results. It was in a spell of temporary hallucination to which she is subject lately, that she left home. ____ Miss Frankie Hendon and Mr. George Heard married at the home of the bride's stepfather, Mr. Ben Mitcham on Sunday morning last. __ AUNT MARTHA DISHAROON DEAD This announcement carries sorrow to the hearts of many who knew and loved this venerable lady. This sad event occurred at her home in Roanoke last Friday morning. She was one of the early inhabitants of this place. She lived to the advanced age of 74 years, though paralyzed for a year or so before her death. The many kind and charitable deeds of her long and useful life will be told as a memorial of her for years to come. For over 50 years Mrs. Disharoon was a member of the Baptist church. Funeral services were conducted from her church Saturday afternoo, Bro. Upshaw making a very appropriate talk to the many mourning friends and relatives. __ A NOBLE LIFE ENDED With the close of the earthly life of Mrs. J.M. Ward at her home in this city at 8 o'clock last Monday evening ended a most useful career on earth and ushered a most consecrated spirit into blissful rest above. We doubt if any woman in this entire community was more universally loved, for surely none was more devoted and true. Her life of 63 years was mostly spent in this community and it is more eloquent than any eulogy we could pronounce upon it. Her place in the Methodist church and sunday school, in the home and in the community cannot be filled. She was in her place in Sunday school last Sunday, though unwell, and taught her class. From that hour her body racked with pain until the moment the following day when god said to her "it is enough, come up higher." What may be said of few was true of her, she was faithful; she hath done what she could. The virtues of her life and character were beautifully referred to by her pastor Tuesday afternoon, when a large concourse gathered at the Methodist church to pay respect to her memory. One by one mothers leave us, but only to await our coming in the mansion prepared. The writer feels a sense of personal loss in the death of this friend of his mother, and fain would he share the sorrow of those who mourn. With her they loved, the battle is over, the weary is at rest, and to the faithful is given a crown. ___ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/randolph/newspapers/newspape541gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 10.5 Kb
