Cardwell. __ MT. OLIVE News Little Charlie Osborn has relapsed with the fever and is very ill. __ At 10 o'clock yesterday, Mr. C.M. Megginson of Ireville and Miss Gillie Watts of Phenix City were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. __ Mr. Thomas Clack Sr. has gone to Phenix City to visit relatives. __ WELSH News It was with regret that our community saw Mr. J.D. Ozley and his excellent wife move back to Evansville, Ga., last Thursday. __ Last Wednesday, Mr. Bartlett Nelson and Miss Pearl Patterson were married. __ LOCAL News Mr. Cornelius Reed who has been sick so long at his brother's of this place, has returned to Columbus. __ A dispatch was received here Monday announcing the death of Frank Chadwick in Greensboro. He was the youngest brother of Mrs. John W. Radney of this county. Just four weeks ago the father, Mr. S.W. Chadwick, died of yellow fever. The hand of the affliction has indeed fallen heavily upon this good family and we sympathize sincerely with them. Mrs. Radney was with her brother when he died. ___ Policemans Miller and Striplin Jr. made a raid Friday night and caught five negroes gambling. They were each fined $10. __ Mr. Jas. J. Huckeba and Miss Newman Tenant were married in Wedowee last Sunday. __ While driving along the highway some miles north of town last Saturday evening, Mr. J.W.D. Strain and his wife were thrown from their buggy by the reckless driving of drunken ruffians returning from the show in Roanoke. Both received several bruises and Mr. Strain, who is about 50 years of age, received a gash above the eye which he was compellted to return to town to have sewed up. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 8, 1897 ROCK MILLS News Quite a serious accident happened in our town yesterday. Floyd, a son of Mr. Robt. Ussery, was caught on the shafting of Mrs. Holley's mill and his whole body was horribly mutilated before assistance could be had. He died in a short time after being removed to his home. __ WEHADKEE News Mr. A.J. Hester is having a fine dwelling erected. __ Last Wednesday, a few miles east of this place a difficulty occurred between Mack Patterson and Homer White in which the former wa shot through the thigh inflicting a very painful wound. Also, at Omaha community Wednesday night, a difficulty occurred between George Norton and Boss Arrington in which the former was cut in several places. Some of the gashes had to be sewn up. Norton was married the same night to a Miss Waldrop. Whiskey was the cause of both difficulties. __ WELSH News Mr. Lem Crouch had the misfortune to stick a pitchfork in his leg last Friday causing a very painful wound. __ Mr. Frank Cook and family are visiting his mother. __ Mr. Oscar Strickland is home from Langdale. He will make this his future home. __ IN MEMORIAM OF MAMIE LOU SMITH, WIFE OF ARNOLD S. SMITH Sister Mamie Lou Smith, wife of Bro. Arnold S. Smith, former Pastor of the Baptist church of Roanoke, is dead. Her faithful husband and two young chldren, with many devoted relatives, will miss her from her accustomed place. "This woman was full of good works." The first two years of her short married life were passed in our town where she soon attached to herself all who came within the radius of her acquaintance. As the helpmeet of our beloved former pastor, she fulfilled the scriptures. Higher praise no one can know. As teacher in our sunday school she was faithful, earnest, instructive. Her death brought an individual sorrow to all. We would not offer to sing her praises now. During her very beautiful christian life we hope and believe she felt and knew we took knowledge of her gentle deeds and we recall them now for emulation by us, for consolation and hope to those for whom she is waiting on the other side. Nichols ____ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Mrs. David Greer, though improving in health, is still feeble. __ Ella Burdett was driving a few days since when the mule turned suddenly, throwing her against the buggy top with sufficient violence to break her shoulder. __ LOCAL News A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Hill on the 4th inst. __ Mr. James Perry has returned to this county from a stay in Texas. He declares that he has enough of that country. __ A little son of Mr. Robert Ussery at Rock Mills was caught in the band of the gin last Saturday and hurled against a stone wall, breaking both legs and an arm. The little fellow died a few hours afterward. The sad accident cast a gloom over the community. ___ The youngest child of Mr. J.C. Hornsby has been quite sick with blood poisoning. It began from a sore toe which the little fellow hurt some time ago. __ Up in Omaha community one night last week a man named Norton was married to a Miss Waldrop. Shortly afterwards one named Arrington called him aside and gashed him up badly with a knife. If the same section last week a fellow named Spruill was wounded at a public sale. The people in the Black Jack region have a strange way of enjoying themselves on festive occasions. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 15, 1897 WELSH News The remains of Mrs. Jim Phillips were brought from Heard County, Georgia and were interred in Lane's Chapel Cemetery. __ Messrs. George and John Lane, Mr. Gus Lane and his daughters Misses Bertha and Mae of Langdale were up Sunday to attend the burial ceremonies of Mrs. Phillips. __ Mr. Dock Moon has a wagon that was made in 1860 and has been in constant use ever since. __ TRUETT News Mr. Thomas J. Kirk and Miss Ada Persaon were married at the residence of the bride's father at 10 o'clock today. After the marriage the greater part of the crowd retired to Mr. John Kirk's place where there was a grand dinner. __ At one o'clock today, Mr. C.E. Culpepper and Miss Lula Stewart were married at the residence of Mr. T.J. Stewart. __ PINE GROVE News Aunt Lou Hodges who has been a great sufferer for many months is no better. We hope she may soon recover. __ Our patrons hauled logs to Mr. Cardwell's saw mill last week and got a good lot of lumber for the purpose of making our school house more comfortable which will be greatly appreciated by both the teacher and pupils. __ LOCAL News Mrs. R.O. Mooty has been ill the past week. __ D.K. Turbeville received a telegram some days ago announcing the death of his youngest brother Will in Nashville. This young man visited Roanoke in the early fall. Mr. Turbeville has lost two sisters and two brothers within the past 29 months. __ The Trammell murder cases which wer set for trial at the extra term of court in LaFayette this week have been nol prossed. __ H.T. Mathews, the husting young widower has attained the dignity of "Grandpa". A son was born to his daughter, Mrs. J.R. Newman at his home last Saturday night. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 22, 1897 WEHADKEE News Mr. R.L. Hester made a flying trip to Bowdon last Sunday. __ Mr. W.C. Enloe and family will leave next Thursday for Langdale to attend a family reunion. __ WELSH News Madame Rumor says there will be a wedding here Thursday night in which Mr. Robert L. Lane and Miss Mattie Whitten will be made one. __ ROCK MILLS News Mr. J.N. Burk and Miss Maybell Boggs married near this place last week. __ LOCAL News Mr. Jerry Tison has moved his family to Roanoke and they are occupying the Gladney residence on Paradise Hill. __ Mr. Oliver Weathers, a son of Mr. J.A.
