Sims returned yesterday to Tuckersburg after a few weeks visit to relatives here. __ Miss Lois Hill returned Thursday from a pleasant visit to her aunt, Mrs. Blake at Wetumpka. __ J.F. Cardwell and wife of Truett and W.W. Culpepper and wife of Albertville were the guests of W.H. Welch and family two days last week. __ As we go to press, "Uncle" Mell Mickle is not expected to survive many hours. The good old soldier is fighting his last battle and will soon win the crown. __ Mr. Fred H. Vernon was recently married to Miss Franklie Mitcham of West Point. __ The Rev. W.B. Costly of Stockbridge, Ga., while attending to his pastoral duties at Ellenwood was attacked by cholera morbus. __ Miss Annie Mayfield and Mrs. Jessie Renfro left Friday on their return trip to Tyler, Texas. __ We learn that John Spence, the fine negro baseball pitcher of Chambers county has moved to Roanoke to run a colored barber shop. He will pitch for the Roanoke team in the game to be played on these grounds against the West Point negroes next Friday afternoon. __ Geo. W. Burgess and Mrs. Ingram drove into town last Friday and repaired to the circuit parsonage at high noon and were united in matrimony by Rev. J.W. Tucker. __ Mr. M.A.J. Carlisle, father of the Carlisle brothers was paralyzed in the right side Saturday and is in critical condition. He is 82 years old and in many respects a remarkable man. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Mrs. Sallie Brown remains in a precarious condition. __ Messrs. W.E. and R.E. Brown expect to carry a drove of cattle to Columbus next week. __ The graveyard at Lane's Chapel was cleaned off yesterday. There are several from this place who have relatives buried there and who assisted. __ WEHADKEE News Mrs. S.J. Lewis and family of Blount County are visiting relatives in this community. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 17, 1898 WELSH News Mr. Arch Ellington of Gold Hill, has been spending the past few days here. "Uncle Arch" as he is familiarly called, has many friends here who are always glad to welcome him. __ Mr. John W. Bates has been sick down at Standing Rock where he went to attend the meeting. __ Jesse J. Jordan and wife of Lanett were visiting relatives here during the past week. They have been married only a few weeks and his many friends wish for him and his wife a life of happiness and success. __ Miss Emma Belle Williams of LaGrange is the guest of relatives here. __ Mr. George Bass and wife of Elmore County are the guests of Mr. Matt Satterwhite and family. __ Mrs. "Lit" Johnston of Hickory Flat and her sister Miss Bettie Brown of Georgia spent last week here with relatives. __ Miss Carrie Cowsart, an intelligent and attractive young lady of Columbus is visiting her sister Mrs. Mattie Strickland. __ Master Henry Jordan was bitten by a rattlesnake Sunday night. A doctor was summoned at once and Henry is not feeling an ill effects from the bite. __ LOCAL News Mr. Lou F. Lane is ill at Franklin, Georgia. __ Mr. Dave Askew died yesterday in the Wehadkee neighborhood at the advanced age of 86 years. __ Mr. J.F. Barron left yesterday in response to a telegram stating that his brother at Cedartown, Ga., was at the point of death. __ Mr. Jewell W. McDonald of Texas is visiting relatives in Roanoke, the family of Mr. McDonough and the family of Mr. Burdett. __ Rev. J.S. Chadwick of Fayetteville and Mr. Robert E. Chadwick of Greensboro arrived yesterday to visit their mother and sister out at Squire Radney's. __ J. Allen Carlisle of Dadeville has rented the Roanoke Warehouse which he will convert into a livery stable. __ Charles A. Cardwell and Miss Katherine Elliott of Truett passed through Roanoke last Sunday to Texas, Georgia where they were married by Rev. J.F. Baird, Esq. Mr. W.H. Welch, uncle of the groom, attended them. __ AN AGED CITIZEN DIES Roanoke is again called upon to surrender one of her eldest and best citizens to the relentless enemy, death. After long months of patient suffering,on the quiet of last Sabbath eve, the spirit of M.J. Mickle took its flight to the land of life and light. He had the best of care at the hands of his family, physicians and friends but is now far better off in that home that is free from pain and sorrow. "Uncle Mel" was born in Georgia 72years ago but had been a resident of this county over 50 years. For the past 46 years he has held the position of justice of the peace, discharging his official duties faithfully. He has been a member of the Baptist church at this place for about forty years. Funeral services were conducted from this church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon by the pastor, a large congregation being present. The death of this good man is a great loss to our community. His sorrowing relatives have the sincere sympathy of all their friends. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 24, 1898 ROCK MILLS News Mr. Geo. W. Holley, accompanied by his mother and sisters Misses Katie and Mildred, left last week for an extended visit to relatives and friends at Oxford, Ala. __ Mr. J.W. Turner is now sick with fever. __ Mr. John Kinney of Rome, Ga., and Miss Estelle Foster were happily united in marriage at the home of the bride's father yesterday evening. __ WEHADKEE News Mr. J.F. Burson, wife and children of Cambridge visited relatives near this place Saturday and Sunday. __ Mr. J.H. Moses, living a few miles north of here had the misfortune to lose his blacksmith shop by fire last Monday night. __ WELSH News Miss Jessie Armstrong of Anniston was the guest of her sister Mrs. Milner this week. __ LOCAL News Mr. Waterhouse with his family of Macon, Ga., is visiting the family of his son-in-law, John M. Danielly of Peavy. __ Mr. L.C. Hutchins, wife and children of Mississippi are visiting relatives in this vicinity. Mr. Hutchins moved from this county twenty years ago. __ Mr. Jas. A. Dye from near LaGrange was here last week trying to rent a house with the view to coming here to educate his children. __ Wm. Marshall's five year old son died last Thursday of croup. In the same community last Monday a son of Isaac Miles died of the same disease. __ Mr. Young Blake made a trip to Clay county last week to erect a monument over the grave of his sister. J. W. Bradley accompanied him to superintend the work. __ There was a male child born last week to Mr. and Mrs. Gus Gladney who was born without arms or legs. Dr. L.L. White the attending physician reports the child as alive and well at last accounts. __ News reached here recently that Rodgers Blake, youngest brother of Messrs. Young and Stell Blake of this county, had been struck by lightning out in New Mexico. Though dangerously hurt it is thought he will recover. __ Mr. Howard and family of Florida are the guests of their relatives Mr. Campbell and family. __ We regret to know that John W. Jackson is critically ill with typhoid fever. __ The case of R.J. Hooten, charged with burning the calaboose some years ago was tried in circuit court at Wedowell last Thursday. Many witnesses were examined and strong speeches made for the state and for the defense. The jury was out on the case from 4 o'clock in the evening till 4 in the morning and finally brought in a verdict of not guilty. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Mrs. Sallie Brown remains very sick and hopes of her recovery have not strengthened since our last writing. __ Reuben Elder and family have moved back from Columbus and we expect others to follow soon. __ On Thursday, August 11th, Rev. J.D. Elder and Mrs. Lizzie Jones were united in marriage. The bride is a daughter of "Uncle" Frank Gay. __ T.J. Roberts is on the sick list but improving. __ Miss Susan Brown is very feeble in health. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 31, 1898 LOCAL News Mrs. Pierce Kimball and four children of Texas are visiting the family of the former's uncle Mr. Robert Brown. __ J.C. Mayfield was here the first of the week attending the bedside of his mother-in-law Mrs. Toliver. __ Edward F. Burkes, son of J.H. Burkes of Welsh, died last Wednesday night of congestion of the stomach after an illness of but a little over 48 hours. The remains were interred in Bethel Cemetery Thursday afternoon. Mr. Burkes boarded in our home and attended school here two years ago. We knew him to be a young man of splendid habits and noble aspirations. With many others we sorrow at his death and sympathize with the bereaved. __ Miss Loula Haralson spent several days past in Roanoke. She was accompanied by her relative Mr. Jas. T. Vickers. __ Mrs. Burton is very ill. Her sister Mrs. R.S. Pate is with her. __ Mrs. Gray, an old lady nearly 80 years old is lying at the point of death at the home of her daughter Mrs. C.R. Power on Rock Mills Street. __ The friends of Mrs. Toliver regret to know that this good lady is still dangerously ill. She has been moved to the home of her brother A.G.
