Mr. Carter had many friends here who were pained to learn of his sad death. __ Mr. J.A. Barrett of Jackson, Mississippi was the guest of Mr. M. Duke and family last week. Mr. Barrett is a skilled musician and made many friends during his short stay here. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Paschal returned to Union Springs on Monday. She was accompanied by her sister Miss Annie Owen. __ Mr. Higgins and Mrs. Hollinger, the father and sister of Mrs. Wade Carlisle, returned Monday to their home in Florida after a long visit to relatives here. __ Dr. J.D. Liles and daughter Mrs. J.T. Nelson spent Saturday and Sunday in Roanoke. The doctor's many friends are glad to know that he is meeting with success in his new home at West Point. __ Freeman and Thompson have moved into their new brick livery stable on Main Street. __ The announcement is made of the approaching marriage of Mr. Mack B. Carlisle of this city to Miss Myrtle Hubbard of Franklin, Georgia, the event to take place on November 9th. __ DEATH OF MR. CARTER The unexpected death of Mr. Jarred Carter, one of our oldest and best known citizens, came as a sad surprise to his friends here and elsewhere. Mr. Carter was taken very ill Thursday night but was better the next morning. A sudden change for the worse came however and carried the old gentleman from this life of conflict to rest above. The deceased was the father of Mesdames J.F. Barron, C.T. Baker and L.E. Harris and it was at the home of the latter that he passed away. He was a good citizen and a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic order. The interment occurred at Rock Mills, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. E.B. Norton. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, November 9, 1898 LOCAL News On Thursday last, two brothers named J.E. Redding and John A. Redding who lived on the plantation of Mr. L.H. Traylor at Gabbettville went to West Point where they drank more or less of the Alabama brand of liquor sold there. When they reached Gabbettville and were near home, a trivial quarrel started between them resulting in the death of John A. Redding by a gunshot inflicted by J.E. Redding. The LaGrange Graphic ___ Miss Hortense Griffin went down to Opelika on Sunday to see her cousin Miss Jodie Floyd who is dangerously ill of typhoid fever. __ Mr. T.S. Foster received a sad telegram Saturday announcing the death of his sister Mrs. James King in Marengo County. He has our sincere condolence. __ Miss Susie Welch who has been ill with typhoid fever at the home of her brother for some days is reported better. Mrs. Welch's father Mr. J.G. Taylor, is also sick at the same house but is convalescing. __ The writer has received the sad news of the death of his cousin Chas. M. Brandon, a brother of Mrs. G.H. Mathis, well known in this city. Mr. Brandon was a prominent and highly esteemed citizen of Florence, Ala., and died in Ashville, N.C. where he had gone in search of health. __ Mr. V.D. Crouch, a citizen of this county, died at his home near Pittman last Friday night. He was a victim of typhoid fever. __ Mrs. Wm. Roberts who lived near Milltown, went out to the cow pen to milk last Monday evening and a short while afterwards she was found dead with the bucket in her arms. __ A few weeks ago Roy Ussery, the young son of our tax collector, shot at a dog and accidentally struck a negro woman who died yesterday. A warrant was sworn out for the boy's arrest. __ Dr. W.C. Gibbs, a well known citizen and Democrat of Wedowee, happened to a fearful misfortune last Monday. He drank some ammonia by mistake and it is hardly expected that he can recover. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, November 16, 1898 WELSH News Mr. C.H. Cole received the news last Friday that his brother, Ben, has been murdered in Tom Green County, Texas. The news will be heard with sadness for he was a native in Randolph County and had many friends when he left in the '70's. __ ROCK MILLS News Mr. Jefferson Davis and Miss Ola Prophet, a pretty young girl of fourteen summers, sped away and were happily married at Glenn, Georgia Saturday night last. __ Mr. Frank Vineyard has been seriously ill with typhoid fever for some time but is reported better at this writing. __ LOCAL News We regret to chronicle the critical illness of Mr. D. McConnaghy, one of our oldest and most popular citizens. His son Jim is here attending him. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, November 23, 1898 LOCAL News J.A. George and family have moved back from Texas to the Truett community. __ Dr. J.M. Welch accompanied Mrs. Walker Pearson, one of his patients, to Atlanta a few days ago where she will be under treatment for a serious malady. __ Miss Vida Pittman, one of Roanoke's many competent teachers, has charge of the school at Texas, Georgia. She began teaching Monday. __ Mrs. Mary Newell died yesterday at her home near Rock Mills and was buried at Bacon Level. She was a twin sister of Mrs. Samuel Fausett of this city and was a good christian woman. __ Dr. Liles was over from West Point Saturday to attend his little grandson, J.P. Radney Jr. who was quite ill with croup but who is recovering. __ Mrs. James Webb, a niece of the senior Messrs. Hill, has been on a visit to relatives here but left Monday on her return to Texas. __ Braxton Dewberry and Miss Sallie Tidwell of Flat Rock went over to Georgia and got married last Sunday. __ Frank Nichols of Lineville spent a few days recently with relatives here. He is fresh from the Army. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, November 30, 1898 MT. OLIVE News Mrs. V.D. Hanson is in a precarious condition. Her friends have lost all hopes of her recovery. __ John Pinckard has relapsed again with the fever. This is the second time. __ Mr. W.M. Green is yet very sick. His children are improving. __ Mrs. H.T. Brown and her son Edmon are convalescent. __ Mr. and Mrs. Green Miles of Denver visited relatives in these parts last week. __ There are at least fourteen cases of typhoid fever in this community. __ LOCAL News Jos. P. Jordan began teaching school at Mt. Zion four miles west of Roanoke. __ A big negro row occurred near here last Friday night in which Jasper Verden was dangerously shot by Sam Colwell. A number of arrests have been made by police but the negro who did the shooting has not yet been apprehended. __ Mr. and Mrs. Carter Wright went down to Tuskegee last week to witness the baptism of the former's aged father and mother who have just united with the Baptist church. These old people have seven children, all of whom are members of that denomination. __ W.Y. Chewning who has been quite sick for several days past is now improving. __ Mr. and Mrs. H.
