Prather of near LaGrangs is the guest of Mr. H.N. Owens and family. __ Mr. William Bennett and family of LaGrange moved to our town last week. __ Mr. D.J. Crowder left for West Point yesterday where he will make his future home. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Pony Greer, W.C. Sharman and Gid Green have moved to Columbus and G.W. Clack is preparing to go. __ Bud Kitchens has moved to Double Head. __ William Kitchens expects to move to West Point shortly. __ Luther Gauntt is confined to his bed with a case of fever. __ The death of Mrs. Lizzie Hanson which occurred Nov. 21st, removed from our community a noble woman. __ Mr. I.L. Lambert, a substantial citizen of Tallapoosa, spent Monday in Roanoke where his wife, formerly Miss Maggie Wood, is visiting her mother. __ Rev. E.B. Norton arrived in Roanoke yesterday to prepare to move his family and household goods to Dadeville. __ We notice in last week's News and Banner that two cases of small pox had appeared in Heard County near Philpot's Ferry. The probate judge had the patients and all who had been exposed placed under guard and quarantine so no fear of spread of the disease is felt. __ Mr. Otis Bowen and Miss Genie Page were married in Five Points last Sunday. __ Rev. Allen S. Andrews was stricken with apoplexy in his study at the Methodist church in Union Springs last Sunday afternoon and died within a few minutes. He expected to leave the following day for a conference in Greensboro. Dr. Andrews was one ofthe brainiest men in the south and his reputation was not confined to this continent. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. For many years Dr. Andrews was president of the Southern University in Greensboro. Many of his pupils will mourn his departure. __ Tax Assessor John V. Trammell of Chambers county was stricken with paralysis last Friday and at last accounts it was thought he could not recover. __ Hiram Radney is very low with typhoid fever at his home near Almond. __ Dr. Sanders, state health officer, has just returned to Roanoke and pronounces the case of the negro at Rock Mills a mild case of smallpox. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 14, 1898 ROCK MILLS News Mr. Rufus Jones and wife of Langdale are here the guests of their father Mr. M. Duke. __ W.E. Randle has just returned from a pleasant visit to relatives and friends at his old home, Nashville, Tennessee. He reports iron and coal men as being prosperous but farmers, like they are everywhere lately are in bad condition. __ Mrs. D.M. Yates has been very sick but is much better at this time. __ Another case of small pox has broken out in our midst. Mr. Walter Boggs, one of the mill operators has it at his home on Factory Hill. He is supposed to have contracted them by handling cotton which had been slept on by the negro who has the smallpox in "negro town". All who were exposed to smallpox were placed in a house of detention. __ WEHADKEE News We are pained to note that Mrs. A.J. Hester is dangerously ill and not expected to live. __ On last Sunday at the bride's home near this place, Mr. C.V. Thomason of Brockville and Miss Lena Green were united in marriage. We wish for the happy couple a long life of joy and happiness. This is four of Mr. Green's children that have married this year. __ LOCAL News We regret to note the illness of Mr. Geo. E. Lee at the home of his brother-in- law, Charles Taylor. __ John P. Lee has the mumps, the o nly case we know of around here. He is at the home of C.E. Taylor. __ Last week, a negro named Scales was shot by a guard while trying to escape from the house of smallpox detention at Rock Mills and died the following day.
