Hicks and wife of Blount County spent several days here with relatives and at Wedowee. They were accompanied by their niece Miss Pearl Gibbs. __ Mr. N.S. Grant from Hanceville, Ala., is visiting relatives in this community. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Green of Clay county are spending several days with Mr. T.P. Green here. __ Messrs. Charlie and Larkin Thornton are sick with the fever. __ The recent rains have caused our farmers to throw off that serious look that made sad every countenance and to put on a smile which should be a token of god's goodness and mercy. __ Mr. R.L. Grant came home last Wednesday from Wisconsin where he has been for the past few years, preparing for the ministry. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Two cases of fever have been reported in John Pinckard's family, his wife and youngest daughter. __ A.J. Phillips has been ill, confined to his room for several days but is improving. __ WEHADKEE News F.B. Brazeal and wife of Frolona, Ga., visited here Friday last week. __ Mr. D.J. Taylor of Temple, Texas is visiting relatives and friends at this place and at High Shoals. __ Since our last writing death has again visited our community and the spirit of Mrs. Davis Arnett has taken its flight to the realms of glory. She leaves a husband, two children and a host of relatives and friends. __ LOCAL News John Burdett is quite sick. __ Leslie Cox is visiting her brother in Atlanta. __ A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Snow on the 25th of July. __ Mr. T.P. Burton, a prominent citizen of LaFayette, died last Friday. He was the father of Miss Annie Mae Burton who has several times visited Roanoke. __ Mr. Jim Askew and Misses Annie and Rosa Askew of Newnan have been spending several days with the family of Mr. Robert Brown. __ Miss Janie McDonald returned Saturday to her home near Atlanta and was accompanied by her sister, Mrs. J.D. Weathers and little Lois. __ Durrell Carroll left Monday for Atlanta with a drove of cattle. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 9, 1899 IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER SHADERICK LEWIS ( written by S.D. Lewis) Shaderick Lewis was born in Putnam County, Ga., December 1, 1811 and departed this life June 15, 1899. He was married to Miss Clara Holcombe in 1836. Two daughters were born to them and she died. He was married to Miss Patton on December 17, 1843. Ten children were born to them, six boys and four girls. Six children are living and six preceeded him across the river. He had 54 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. He moed from Georgia to this county in October 1869. He professed a hope in christ many years ago but never attached himself to any church. Oh, how we miss father! But our loss is his eternal gain. We will see his face no more on earth but we hope to meet him in heaven where parting will be no more. So farewell dear father; " Thou art gone to the grave but we will not deplore thee; Though darkness and sorrow encompass thy tomb, The savioir has passed through its portals before thee, and the lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom." Written by S.D. Lewis ___ LOCAL News "Uncle Fonse" Pittman, living near Springfield is very ill. His wife is also indisposed. __ Mr. Langston Liles, a very aged citizen of the Flat Rock community, died last Wednesday. He was the grandfather of A.R. Noel, of this city. __ Little Lemerie, daughter of W.W. Wadsworth, died Wednesday and was interred in the city cemetery, Rev. H.M. Stevenson conducting the services. We extend condolence to the bereaved. __ J.A. Walden has been chosen deputy sheriff to succeed Mr. Napier. He will begin his duties at next court. __ Dr. A.W. Duke, a prominent citizen of the county, died suddenly at his home in Brockville last Thursday night. __ Sherley Owen is enjoying a pleasant visit to his old home here. __ Mrs. Charlie Power and Mrs. Jason Kirk are on the sick list from east Roanoke. __ E.P. Mickle and family, J.P. Radney and family, George E. Lee and Dr. Charles Thompson left Monday for an outing to Chandler's Springs. __ We regret to chronicle the death of Mr. Albert Dodgen, a good citizen of Langdale and a brother of J.P. Dodgen. He was buried at Standing Rock on Sunday. We sympathize with those who mourn for this good man. __ Another reckless and dangerous shooting is reported from the Double Head neighborhood. The house of Mr. Dick Hamlin was fired into last Saturday night some ten times in succession. It is time that this kind of lawlessness was stopped. __ Monday evening a number of young people were invited to the lovely home of Mrs. S.C. Pittman where they were entertained by that superb hostess Miss Eva Pittman. Prominent among the features of the evening were the singing of Mr. Cappa and the serving of delicious refreshments. The event was given in honor of Mr. F.H. Cappa who left the following morning for his home in Louisville, Kentucky. This gentleman made many friends during this stay in Roanoke. ___ A YOUNG MAN DIES At 4:30 o'clock this morning, Escar A. Pittman died at his home a few miles north of town. He had been ill for some time with something like brain fever. He was the only son of tax assessor M.P. Pittman and he leaves a wife and two little boys. The funeral will occur at 10 o'clock tomorrow at Lebanon church. The sorrowing family and friends have our sympathy. __ DEATH OF COL. C.C. ENLOE At 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon occurred the death of Col. C.C. Enloe who was the oldest male resident of Wedowee, having lived there nearly all of his long life. He came from North Carolina in his boyhood and has been identified with the history of Randolph county through all these years. He was a man of generous impulses and had strong friends. In politics Mr. Enloe was a Republican. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity. The deceased was stricken with paralysis while at supper the evening before his death. The interment was in the cemetery at Wedowee. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 16, 1899 LOCAL News Mrs. Thomas L. Belcher is ill. __ Walter Wood, son of J. Wm. Wood, was married to Miss Blanche Allen of Georgia last Friday. __ J.W. Bradley visited LaGrange the latter part of last week. The only child of his son Orin had been carried there from Atlanta being at the point of death. __ Mrs. Davis arrived at the home of her daughter Mrs. Jeffers last Friday evening, just in time to attend the funeral services for her little grandchild Louise Jeffers. __ Ivy Peden who was taken from LaFayette jail dangerously sick, was brought to his home below town Monday and is now at the point of death. __ Will Langley and Val Taylor arrived Saturday from Nashville. __ Mrs. George Bradley is quite ill with fever. __ Mrs. J.W. Ray was taken quite suddenty and painfully ill on Monday. __ Mrs. J.F. Barron and daughter are visiting relatives in South Carolina. __ Otis Fincher, wife and two children are sick with fever, out a few miles from town. __ George Heard and wife of Langdale have been spending some days past with the family of B.J. Mitcham. __ Among the sick reported from east Roanoke this week are Mrs. J.C. Jackson and Mrs. S.D. Burdett who have the fever. __ After a long illness, Miss Cleo Moore died last Monday morning at her parents home in this place. Her remains were taken the following day to the family burying grounds near Antioch, Ga. Another sad feature of this case is that the mother of the deceased is herself ill with fever. We extend sympathy. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 23, 1899 ROCK MILLS News (by W.H. Knight, correspondent) Mr. Moses Hollis and Mrs. Mary Phillips were happily married at the residence of the bride last Sunday, Rev. Mr. Avery officiating. __ Miss Ida Harper of this place and Mr. David Owens of Glenn, Ga., regardless of parental objections, eloped to Georgia and were married last Sunday week. __ Mr. Eddie Hearn has been very ill with fever but is reported as being better at this time. __ LOCAL News Mr. Reuben Smith of LaGrange is visiting his uncle, W.H. Bass. __ Joe Andrews, a wealthy citizen of LaFayette died suddenly a few days ago. __ Kenney Handley, a well known young colored man had the misfortune to lose his mother last Friday. __ Dr. Hudson was called to Roanoke on Monday to see Mrs. Burpee who is quite ill. __ Mr. W.A. Brummit is here attending his sick brother who is slowly improving. __ Miss Minnie Ponder of Driver is visiting her aunt, Mrs. W. H. Cook this week. __ Miss Effie Pinckard, daughter of John Pinckard died near Double Head last night. __ Bob Causey, who holds a good position in Atlanta, visited his old home and friends here the past few days. __ H.N. Owen and son-in-law John Collins, have charge of the Carlisle and Thompson shop and the latter will move his family here. __ Philip Wright, one of Roanoke's best and most respectable colored citizens, has the sympathy of his friends here in the death of his wife, which occurred Saturday night. __ We regret to report that Mrs. Sue Pittman is quite ill. No one is more kind and attentive to the sick and distressed than is this good lady and all her friends will unite in the wish that she may have a speedy recovery. __ Charles Gable was called to Atlanta on Monday by the dangerous illness of his father. His place as operator was held down by Pate Mayfield until a relief agent from Atlanta could arrive. __ J.W. Kitchens, a deputy revenue collector, formerly located at Heflin, has moved with his family to Roanoke and they are boarding at W.C. Orr's. __ CARD OF THANKS Please allow me to thank my many friends for their untiring efforts and assistance rendered me during my sore distress. Much sympathy has been expressed me for among white friends for the loss of my loving and devoted wife. All these have my thanks. But more especially the members of the F & A A Y M. To lose a faithful and loving wife causes much distress, but our loss is heaven's gain. P.P. Wright, Roanoke, Ala., Aug. 21, 1899 ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 30, 1899 JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News A.J. Phillips is still confined to his bed. __ Forney Wheeler has been chosen to lead the school at Mt. Olive the ensuing year. __ Willie Fincher, the oldest son of Henry Fincher, died last Saturday and his remains were laid to rest at Antioch the following day. He had been in bad health several months. __ LOCAL News Mrs. W.A. Parrish and children left yesterday for Blocton. __ George C. Wright of Tuskegee visited his brother J.C. Wright the first of the week. __ The meeting which has been protracted at the Methodist church during the two weeks previous came to a close Sunday night at which time the pastor received into the church: Mr. Booth Mrs. John T. Heflin Mrs. W.C. Lane Misses Ethel and Emma Oldham By vows: Mrs. Pattie Liles; and by letter: Mrs. Booth Mr. John W. Jackson was received into the church the following morning being baptized by immersion. ___ Fred Vernon of this place will have charge of the cotton seed oil mill in Birmingham which is being erected by T.J. Pinckard, formerly of this place. __ Mrs. M.A. Dudley and family left for Clio in Barbour County where they will make their future home. Mrs. Dudley ahs relatives there. __ The little ten month old son of Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Randle died last Saturday night after an illness of some days. The reamins were interred in the cemetery at this place Sunday afternoon. Many friends sympathize with the saddened parents in their affliction. __ A telegram was received Sunday by H.G. Ruggles stating that his brother Emmett M. Ruggles has been killed by falling from a building in Chattanooga. Later particulars are that he was asleep in the window of his bedroom in the second story. The interment was in Rome, Ga. where the deceased had a brother. The unfortunate young man will be remembered by the people of Roanoke having spent some months of last year here. A sad feature of the occurrence is that the mother of the deceased is too ill at the home of her son in this place to be apprised of the terrible news. __ Dr. M.D. Liles is again here attending his son-in-law Mr. Brummitt who has suffered a relapse and is now critically ill. __ Mr. Val Taylor and Miss Josie White were married in Wedowee last Friday. __ The remains of Mr. Joseph B. Merrill will arrive in Roanoke this afternoon from San Antonio, Texas, escorted by a Masonic committee. The Masons and Knights of Pythias of Roanoke will take charge of the remains upon arrival at the depot. The funeral party will proceed to Wedowee this evening or in the morning where the interment will occur with Masonic honors. Mr. Merrill was a former citizen of this county and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He was a brother-in-law of W.W.
