Smith, had his left arm caught in the teeth of the gin. The arm was badly lacerated its entire lenth. The last two fingers of his hand were cut almost entirely off but Dr. Floyd thinks that he can save them. We trust that our good neighbor will soon recover from this unfortunate accident. __ Durward Cox, wife and child are visiting the former's parents in this place for about ten days. They will probably go from here to Columbus, Miss., where Mr. Cox has been assigned as an operator. __ G.W. Hill and Mrs. W.C. Orr visited the latter's mother Mrs. Brown over in Clay county last week. She is very ill. __ Mrs. Burdett is convalescing after a long illness with typhoid fever. __ A deplorable accident occurred Saturday morning at W.T. Lee's ginnery, three miles north of Rock Mills. While working at the gin himself, Mr. Lee's left arm was caught in the saws of the gin and his hand and arm up to the elbow were terribly lacerated. Several severe cuts were also made above the elbow and about midway between the elbow and shoulder and the shoulder bone was broken. Medical aid was secured with the greatest haste and the wounds were dressed as well as possible. It is believed that the limb can be saved. Mr. Lee is bearing his affliction with great fortitude and bids fair to make a safe recovery. He has the sympathy of many friends for he is a valuable and popular citizen. ___ J.A. Crouch, a good citizen of Bacon Level, had his barn and all of its contents destroyed by fire Monday. The loss was considerable as there was no insurance. __ Mr. John Oldham of Birmingham, Miss Bessie Oldham of Atlanta, brother and sister of the late Miss Nellie Oldham and Mr. Wesley of Atlanta, a friend, arrived Sunday to attend the funeral services of Miss Nellie Oldham. __ Mr. and Mrs. W. Wade Wood moved to Birmingham where the former has a fine position with the new firm of J.G. Whitfield & Co. of which Mr. Wood is also a member. They will reside on the south Highlands of that area. ___ DEATH OF MISS NELLIE OLDHAM This young lady died shortly after noon last Saturday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Oldham of this place. She was taken ill in Atlanta and came here hoping to recover but she was reconciled to the divine will and dreaded not to die. Though a stranger among us she gave evidence to those who knew her of a beautiful christian life. The sad ending of her promising young life called forth the sympathy of our entire community for the bereaved family, and this was shown by many words and deeds of kindness. Sunday afternoon the funeral services were conducted at the cemetery by Rev. Geo. L. Jenkins in the presence of a large concourse of people. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 11, 1899 WEHADKEE News Mrs. A.W. Whatley was taken dangerously ill last Monday but is some better now. __ Messrs. Haynes and Barlett had the misfortune to lose their sawmill a few days ago. A large lot of lumber was burned. __ ROCK MILLS News Mrs. J.H. Laws, after a long and painful illness, died at her home here Tuesday night last. The funeral service which was conducted by Rev. G.L. Jenkins, was held at the home of the deceased, after which the remains were interred in the city cemetery. __ Mr. James Turner and family moved here a few days ago. __ Miss Belle Lane of near Bacon Level is very ill with fever. __ Mr. B.F. Senft of Ozark, Ala., is visiting his son Mr. A.S. Senft and family. __ NON-RESIDENT NOTICE State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court Sept. 25, 1899 Notice to: J.T. Disharoon who resides in the state of Texas, Thurbur, Post Office You are hereby notified that on this day Etta Disharoon and Fannie Disharoon have filed in this court their petition in writing and under oath, together with a paper in writing purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Martha E. Disharoon, deceased, late of said county, for probate and that the 11th day of December 1899 has been set by the court for the hearing of said petition at which time you can appear and contest the same if you think proper. Witness my hand this the 25th day of September 1899. Stell Blake, Probate Judge ___ LOCAL News Miss Ida West is improving. She has the fever. __ Dr. W.P. Smith of Glenn, Georgia was in town Friday. We regret to chronicle the continued dangerous illness of his wife. She has been very low with typhoid fever for several weeks. __ Ed Sudduth, son of Jonathan Suddeth, died at his father's home north of town yesterday morning. Sunday he was operated on for appendicitis and though the operation was successful, the patient also had typhoid fever and could not survive. __ C.N. Avery spent a few days last week with relatives in this vicinity. On Monday he left for Taylor, Texas where he has a good position as a salesman. May you have all the success that you deserve, Needham. __ C.E. Hines, a prosperous young merchant at Standing Rock, reports that his cousin Ed Baker has been quite ill of fever. __ A marriage occurred Monday night. Mr. Richard E. Allen, a dry goods merchant of this city and Miss Valesta Striplin. They sped away to Franklin, Ga., where they were made man and wife. Miss Valesta is the daughter of Mr. S.H. Striplin. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 18, 1899 ROCK MILLS News Last Saturday night at Franklin, Georgia, Mr. Charlie Wirt Holley and Miss Amma Green of Antioch, Ga., were united in the holy bonds of wedlock. The couple returned here Sunday morning. __ Mr. James Walker Sr. returned home from Island Home, Ala., where he was been visiting relatives and friends. __ Mr. A.T. Boggs and family moved to LaGrange last week. __ Mr. H.N. Owens is on the sick list. __ A child of Mr. Will Rice died at his home near here this morning. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News Mrs. Beda Fincher and H.J. Price are recovering from an attack of fever. __ Our highly esteemed post master, Uncle Davie Greer, is confined to his bed much of the time. His looks have already been bleached by the frosts of eighty- four winters and it is not strange that he should be bending beneath the burden of years. __ Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson of Chapel Hill were visiting relatives and friends here yesterday. __ LOCAL News Dr. Welch's mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Wood, is very ill at her home near Truett. __ The colored school of Roanoke opened up in the colored Baptist church Monday with Carrie Coleman as teacher. __ The Leader chronicles with regret the death of the wife of Dr. W.P. Smith at Glenn, Ga. She had been ill a long time. A husband and one child besides many friends mourn her death. We offer condolence to the doctor in his sorrow. __ Our community is in sympathy with Mrs. S.C. Pittman and her daughters in the dangerous illness of the former's son Vinley, who has typhoid fever at a hospital in Lexington, Kentucky where he has been attending school. Miss Exa Pittman left Saturday to attend him and will probably be away for some time. __ J.P. Radney and family went over to Pleasant Hill on Sunday. Mr. Radney's youngest brother Cass had been bitten by a snake and was painfully injured but is is recoverly nicely. __ R.E. Allen has gone to Rockford, Coosa County, to stand trial for shooting a man about a year ago. __ Miss Beulah Gay is spending some time with Mrs. Burton. __ A young man named Bud Williams committed suicide over in the western part of the county last Thursday night by cutting himself with a knife. __ The wife of John P. Crowder of near Stroud died last week. __ Notice to trespassers; we hereby forbid anyone hunting, turning cattle on or otherwise transgressing our lands one mile east of Roanoke. S.D. Burdett N.E. Fincher W.G. Floyd ___ Cards have been issued announcing the marriage of Mr. Charles E. Higgins to Miss Olive Pittman at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Pittman on Wednesday evening, Oct. 25th at 7 o'clock. __ Mrs. J.T. Arnett died last Thursday at her home near town. Her husband and sons are among our best citizens and many friends sympathize with them in the death of this good woman. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 25, 1899 WEHADKEE News Mr. J.E. Seegar is our champion turnip raiser. He has a nice patch for market. __ Mr. W.E. Hester has accepted the school at Midway and will begin teaching about the 15th of November. __ Mr. A.S. Robertson of Hubbard, Texas arrived last Friday to visit relatives and friends. He is in bad health and will remain some time to partake of Randolph's pure water and air. ___ LOCAL News Among the sick this week are Mrs. J.P. Radney and Mrs. J.T. Talley. __ Mrs. R.J. Hooten and children are spending a week with relatives near Alexander City. __ Orin Bradley came over from LaGrange and returned Tuesday with his family, accompanied by Mrs. George Bradley on the return. __ J.W. Shepard, a faithful colored subscriber from near Wedowee, came in and paid his dollar Saturday. __ Dixie Freeman left yesterday for Florida where he goes to spend the winter. __ Joshua Ballard, a well known citizen in this community, is now in jail at Wedowee. He was under bond on an indictment by the grand jury but his wife and son, who were on his bond, gave him up. __ Mr. T.G. Burpee, father of Mr. S.C. Burpee of this place, died suddenly last Friday while riding into Newnan, Ga., his home. He was a prominent and wealthy citizen, and about 75 years of age. The interment was at Glenn, Georgia last Sunday. Several from this place attended the funeral with Mr. Sam Burpee. __ Mr. I.G. Hill and Mrs. W.C. Orr went over to Lineville last Thursday, being called there by the death of Mrs. P.A. Brown, the former's sister and the latter's mother. She died Wednesday at noon and was buried before Mr. Hill and Mrs. Orr arrived in Lineville though they made all possible haste. __ A telegram just received states that Dick Allen was acquitted. He was tried at Rockford for shooting a man. __ Last Sunday morning occurred the marriage of Mr. Jos. P. Jordan to Miss Nora Ivey at the latter's home at Chapel Hill in Chambers county. Rev. Jesse Holliday performed the ceremony. Mr. Jordan is the son of Mr. R.B. Jordan of Welsh community, a brother of our Mr. Jordan and has for several years been the vigilant correspondent of the Leader from his community. He is an upright and industrious young man and well deserves the good fortune he has won. Mr. and Mrs. Jordan will make their home at Level Road where the former will teach school the ensuing year.
