Meacham is now in Montomery, engaged in the pottery business. __ W.H. Allison left this morning for Jacksonville, Florida where he too will engage in the pottery business for some time. __ D.J. Crowder and mother of Lanett visited relatives here last week. __ Mr. Ed Hearn who has been very ill is improving at this time. __ WEHADKEE News On Sunday the 26th, Mr. B.W. Whatley and Miss B.A. Hester were married at the home of the bride near Midway. __ LOCAL News Mr. Gabe Wood is some better. Dr. Disharoon of this city was called to attend him. __ R.T. West went overin Georgia on Saturday to spend Sunday with his brother-in- law, Gabe Wood, who was reported to be lying at the point of death. Mr. West's wife and mother in law had preceded him there. __ Mrs. Wade Wood arrived in Roanoke to remain several days while her husband is attending a sick brother in Georgia. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 13, 1899 LOCAL News Durrell Carroll has entered partnership with his father in the livery business and will have charge of the same. __ A card from J.H. Cliett of Terrell, Texas dated Dec. 5th states that he will be in Roanoke is a few days and expects to remain in this county. __ A well written sketch of Capt. W.A. Handley and the town of Roanoke appeared in yesterday's Atlanta Constitution, together with a picture of our most distinquished citizen. It is from the pen of Mrs. Ben Couper. __ Last Saturday, John Carmichael, who lives near Milltown, while driving out of Roanoke undertook to pass another team about a mile from town when a brush hung in the wheels of one of the vehicles which frightened Mr. Carmichael's team and caused him to be thrown out. The bones of one leg were broken, making a serious wound. ___ Miss Gusta Bonner, sister of Mr. Virgil Bonner, died suddenly at her home near Wedowee last Friday. __ Mr. J.E. Mann was called yeterday by telegram to Perry, Ga., on account of the dangerous illness of his mother. He left from Greensboro. __ Mr. C. Brooks Bailey was married yesterday to Miss Cassie Birdsong, niece of J.C. Hornsby at the bride's home north of town. __ Mr. Charles Lane of Brockville has bought a place over in Heard County and will move there after January first. We regret to lose so good a citizen from Randolph. __ Tonight at the residence of Mr. H.H. Redmond, near Double Head, his daughter Miss Lela, will be married to James H. Sledge, son of S.N. Sledge. __ Mr. Zack Gunn has brought to this office a plank that is something of a curiosity. In tearing down the old Lane residence, two miles below town, some months ago, he found this plank on the walls. It has written on it the family history of James W. Hammond and is dated July 6th, 1854. Since that writing many changed have occurred beside the tearing down of the old Hammond homestead. Mr. Hammond himself has doubtless long since succumbed to the ravages of death. This old plank with its antiquated handwriting is a strong reminder of the fleetness of time. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 20, 1899 WEHADKEE News Last Wednesday night as Robert Harlan, Henry Veal and two negroes were returning from Roanoke, some unknown parties fired several shots at them from ambush, but no one was hit. Such conduct is an outrage in our country. __ JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News There were two burials near this place last week. our aged postmaster "Uncle" Davy Greer was laid to rest at Mt. Hickory last Tuesday, and on the same day Rev. H.W. Elder's youngest child was buried at New Hope. The bereaved have our sympathy. __ LOCAL News Young Ben Burton of LaFayette was in town Monday and Tuesday and brought a large drove of cattle. He is perhaps the youngest cattle dealier in the state, being only about fifteen years of age. He learned the business under his father and since the latter's death some months ago, he has managed his affairs with success. __ Mrs. Pattie Liles went over to West Point yesterday where she will meet relatives from Texas. __ Miss Nora Wright is expected home Friday to spend the holidays. She will be accompanied by her cousin Miss Muzet Sewell of Texas. __ Mrs. Wood and Mrs. West returned last week from waiting upon Mr. Gay Wood, the former's son who is now recovering. __ Dove Rotten and Miss Millie Phillips, daughter of the late Andrew Phillips, are to be married next Sunday. __ Pope Driver has gone to Birmingham to take an interest with his brother-in-law C.O. Stafford in a mercantile business. __ Rev. James T. Lane is spending some days with relatives in and near Roanoke, all of whom are glad to see him. Next Sunday at 11 o'clock he will preach at Lane's Chapel. __ R.W. Griffin left this morning for Texas. He is taking with him a car of cattle which he will place on his ranch in the Pan Handle district. Mr. Griffin will spend the holidays with his father and other relatives and will return to Roanoke the fifth of January. __ Mr. Mann's mother died last Tuesday.
