Hester and other relatives in this vicinity. He lives in Indian Territory and has been absent about eight years. __ Mr. Thomas Weathers was a welcome caller Monday. He paid for his own paper and ordered one for a relative in Albertville. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 14, 1900 WEHADKEE News The children of H.W. Jones and D.M. Bennefield have been very ill with pneumonia but are improving. __ J.F. Lewis and wife of Gadsden have recently moved into this community. __ LOCAL News Myrtle, the daughter of E.R. Caswell, 12 years of age, died Tuesday at her home over on the Georgia line. __ Miss Beulah Gay is expected home today from Fredonia where she has been visiting relatives the past week. __ Mrs. G.S. Emory, an aged lady and mother of G.W. Emory, mayor of Rock Mills, died last Wednesday at her home near Glenn, Georgia. __ Judge Stell Blake of Wedowee was here Saturday. He was investigating the Heard County system of caring for paupers, expecting to make some changes in the management and support of the wards of Randolph county. The Franklin News and Banner ___ Mr. T.J. Harmon was married to Miss Claude Kirby at the home of the bride last Sunday, Rev. John Cliett officiating. __ It is reported that a negro was bitten by a mad dog near Stroud and died last week of hydrophobia. __ J.M. Gay of LaFayette was in Roanoke Sunday and Monday. __ The Chattahoochee river was reported to be overflowing at West Point yesterday. __ Mrs. B. Brown, who has been ill for so long died at her home in the Double Head community on Saturday. __ T.N. Anderson from Nashville, Tenn., will be in Roanoke about the 14th of February for a visit. __ Mr. P.H. Huckeba and family left Wednesday for Texas, their future home. __ Some of our readers may be interested in knowing that a letter received by the editor (O.H. Stevenson) last Friday, gave news of the death in Memphis, Tenn. of Mr. W.M. Stevenson, a brother of the late Rev. John B. Stevenson. He was one of the best of men and was superintendant of the sunday school at his old home church for the past forty years. He lived to the age of 82 years. Of eight brothers, only one remains, Thos. C. Stevenson who has reached the age of 75. __ Roanoke is to have a cotton factory soon. It will be chartered under the name The W.A. Handley Manufacturing Company. The general nature of the business will be the manufacture of raw cotton, the spinning of thread, yards and the weaving of cloth and other fabrics of cotton and wool and to sell the same; to erect and operate cotton seed oil mills. __ NEGRO FOUND DEAD Sunday morning a negro named Jim Houston, who lives on Broughton Ridge was found in an outhouse on the Weathers place, three miles west of town. Justice East, acting as coroner, empaneled a jury and summoned Dr. Pool and all repaired to the scene Sunday afternoon to make an investigation. No marks were found on the dead man's person. Monday morning Judge East convened his court and after examining several witnesses the jury rendered a verdict that the deceased came to his death from the use of too much whiskey. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, February 21, 1900 JOHNSON'S CROSS ROADS News The death of Sallie Brown which has already been mentioned in the Leader removes from this community one of its most worthy members. For nineteen long months she has been a great sufferer. During all this time she exhibited a degree of patience seldom manifested in the afflicted. She was buried at Antioch Monday, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. J.D. Elder. __ The remains of James Daniel, familiarly known as "Dutch Daniel", were laid to rest at Mt. Hickory last Thursday. Elder Satterwhite conducted the funeral service. __ Since out last items were published, John Elder and Minnie Kitchens were married. Also married were Cal Gross and Simmie Burditt. That their voyage may be a tranquil one is the wish of a host of friends. __ Mrs. James H. Clack has gone up to see her new granddaughter Miss Poer. __ LOCAL News The mother of C.E. Higgins is ill. __ Mr. John T. Pearson died at his home near West Point last Saturday. He was a brother of Mr. H.D. Pearson of Double Head and was a prominent citizen of west Georgia. __ In talking with an old Mexican war veteran yesterday he mentioned that a movement has been agitated to have the government increase the pensions of the few surviving veterans of the Mexican war. Some of these old soldiers badly need it. __ Mr. J.R. Ryan who is a brother of Mrs. R. Kyle arrived from South Carolina Thursday. __ We were treated to a pleasant call on Wednesday last, by Mr. F.A. McMurray who is now ninety years old. __ Mrs. Frances Peden, an aged christian lady, died at her home near Welsh last Thursday and was buried at Lane's Chapel on Friday. Rev. A.M. Yoe conducting the services. She had been faithful member of the Methodist church for fifty- seven years. Her husband was killed while fighting for the Confederacy. __ In the Truett community last Wednesday, occurred the death of Mrs. Sallie Cardwell, the mother of Mr. A.W. Cotney. Also on the same date the infant of Mr. and Mrs. John Park died. __ Cal Ellington is spending a few days here. He has just recovered from a long spell of fever. __ Mr. J.T. Arnett returned a few days ago from Chehaw, where he had spent a month with his son William, who was badly crippled while working on the Western Railroad some time since. The wounded man is unable to walk. __ Last Thursday afternoon the dwelling house of Thomas Patton, the Leader's colored pressman, caught fire from a flue and was soon consumed. Tom works at the oil mill at night and was sleeping in his house when the fire was discovered. He narrowly escaped with his life. Only a few articles were saved. The house and furniture were insured. Patton is a steady, hardworking man and he deserves the sympathy of both races in his loss. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 28, 1900 LOCAL News Mrs. J.G. Kirk has been quite sick. __ Capt. A.J. Green was a caller yesterday at the news office and left his order for stationery. __ A.J. Taylor came down from Wedowee on Thursday. Mr. Taylor is operating in the upper part of the county a gold mine which he says is one of the richest he has seen. __ Court adjourned at Wedowee yesterday. The most important case tried was that of Andrew Garnett, charged with poisoning his wife. After being out all night and half a day the jury brought in a verdict of guilty and his punishment announced was imprisonment for life. __ Last Sunday, Rev. A.M. Yoe performed the marriage ceremony that united the lives of Mr. James H. Simmons of Penton and MIss Martha Brown of Double Head. __ Mrs. Sanders returned Saturday from a long visit to her brother in Huntsville who has been quick sick but is better now. __ Bob Almon, a prominent citizen of Heard County, was shot last Friday at Texas, Georgia but only slightly injured. __ A CHILD DROWNED A very distressing accident occurred Monday evening at the old Waller place on the edge of town. The two year old child of Bill Davis, who married the daughter of Mr. S.S. Waller, was missed, and after an hour's search the body was found under water in an old flower pit, life being extinct. The child had wandered off and fallen in when no one was near. The parents have the sympathy of the whole community. __ WEHADKEE News We had rain, sleet and snow last Saturday. It is thought that the fruit crop is badly hurt by the heavy freezes. __ Mr. Milton Walker, an esteemed citizen, died at his home near Paran last Friday and was buried Saturday. __ The little boy of J.E.
